Hibbitts provided updates on Hurley and Council high schools

Students from both Hurley High School and Council High School received good news during the Buchanan County School Board’s Feb. 7 meeting.
Buchanan County Public Schools superintendent Melanie Hibbitts informed board members that students will return to their respective schools before graduation.
Hibbitts said the restoration project at Hurley is on track after students were displaced due to a blaze that caused fire, smoke and water damage to HHS in October forcing students to move into Hurley Elementary/Middle School which made the school a k-12 facility.
Since October, Paul Davis Restoration Company of Bristol has worked to repair the damage to the school.
“Things are on track and we still anticipate being in so the students can graduate from Hurley High School,” Hibbitts said.
Hibbitts showed board members up-to-date pictures of the school and pointed out the new color scheme in the hallways and doorways, replaced ceiling tiles, replaced lighting, a new large window in one of the damaged classrooms and the work that has been done to the gym, cafeteria and auditorium.
Hibbitts said CHS is being abated and there is plastic sectioning off specific areas during the abatement process. Hibbitts noted that the gymnasium and several hallways are currently being used to store equipment and a large amount of tile that was destroyed in the flooding which was caused by a busted water pipe has been removed from different areas of the school and is ready to be replaced.
“The abatement should finish up by the end of the month and flooring should start so they are making progress there as well,” Hibbitts said.
In other business, South Grundy School Board member David Thornbury requested that beginning with the graduating class of 2024, all graduation gowns must be the same color. North Grundy School Board Member Angie McClanahan seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously by the board.
Thornbury said beginning next year boys and girls will have one color and the high school principals at each of the four Buchanan County high schools can meet with the senior class to determine that color.
“That way there is uniformity and should limit the problems,” Thornbury said.
In other business, Knox School Board member Robbie Cline made a motion which was seconded by Garden School Board member Ray Blankenship and unanimously approved by the board the following individuals who had completed the substitute/volunteer in-service training during the month: Amber Belcher, Kami Harris, Cassandra Lester, Tiffany Lester, Latasha McCowan, Tonya Moore, Karen Nelson, Kara Seegrist, Kamryn Vandyke and Christina Wood.
In other business, Cline made a motion to accept the following resignations which were seconded by Blankenship and unanimously approved by the board:
Mark Coleman, payroll coordinator at the central office
Janie Keen, paraprofessional at Twin Valley Elementary/Middle School
Kaitlyn Travis, a teacher at Grundy High School
Additionally, Thornbury made a motion that was seconded by Hurricane School Board member Mike Thompson and unanimously approved by the board to accept two requests for maternity leave for Ashleigh Campbell, a teacher at Twin Valley Elementary/Middle School and Celisha Waynick, a teacher at Hurley High School.

The Boys & Girls Club of Central Appalachia, powered by STREAMWORKS and Buchanan County Public School’s Robotics Teams, competed in Robot Drone League’s 4th annual Championship at East Tennessee State University on Feb. 4.
BGCCA and Buchanan County Public School’s teams competed against nineteen other teams in the region bringing home The Judges Award and Professors Award in the STEM event.
RDL was designed to provide students with open-ended challenges that allow for creation and innovation by engaging in hands-on design, engineering, and programming of interactive robots and drones enhancing their STEM skills, teamwork, and collaboration.
This year RDL Junior was unveiled for younger elementary school students. The “Three Ring Circus” challenge provides younger students, with the unassisted guidance of mentors, the experience of building and programming a robot and drone to execute assigned field challenges and solve STEM questions.
