Officials Attack Proposal to Eliminate Mining
Permit
Funds
Approved for New Russell Prater VFD Building

County
officials are on the offense in regards to a proposal
that would eliminate a key surface-mining permit.
The
Army Corps of Engineers proposed in June to eliminate
Nationwide Permit 21, which authorizes the discharge
of fill material into waters of the United States
associated with surface coal mining and reclamation
operations. Critics say such a move would cripple the
industry and have a devastating effect on the area's
economy, a main gear of which is coal production.
On
Monday, the board of supervisors took an official
stance on the matter, attacking the proposal on
several fronts.
Board
members submitted comments to the Corps in writing,
questioning both the intent of the proposal, as well
as its merit.
