Ella Mae Denny
(Vansant)

    Ella Mae Coleman Denny, 60, of Vansant, died Monday, March 8, 2010 in Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, TN.
    Born in Buchanan County, October 16, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Hufford Coleman and Polly Deel Coleman. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith and was a 1968 graduate of Grundy Senior High School. She was a former employee of Grundy Drug and Medical Park Pharmacy.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie Coleman Childress and Shirley Coleman Owens, and one brother, Hassell Coleman.
    She is survived by her former husband, James Denny of Grundy; one sister, Evelue Blankenship and husband, Larry, of Rural Retreat; five brothers, Ersel Coleman and wife, Lois, Ralph Coleman and wife, Nila, Estil Coleman and wife, Peggy, Hufford Coleman, Jr. and wife, Rita, and Roger Coleman and wife, Rebecca, all of Vansant; one sister-in-law, Helen Coleman of Vansant; one brother-in-law, Bill Owens of Vansant; several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held Friday, March 12 at 11 a.m. at Little Martha Old Regular Baptist Church on Leemaster with Elders Howard Daniels, David Lester, James Tackett, Carson Wright, Teddy Honaker, Mark Justice, Steve Coleman and James Tackett of the New Salem Association officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman Cemetery on Airport Road, Vansant.
    Active pallbearers will be nephews and nieces.
    Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Shanahan, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Roger Daniels, Betty Morefield, Gary and Connie Elswick, Elizabeth Rowe and James and Fern Duty.
    The family will receive friends at Little Martha Old Regular Baptist Church on Leemaster after 6 p.m. Wednesday. Evening services will be held Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

Amos Jean Coleman
(Home Creek)

    Amos Jean Coleman, 86, of the Home Creek section of Buchanan County, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Clinch Valley Medical Center following an extended illness.
    Born in Mingo County, WV, he was a son of the late Everette Shannon Coleman and Flora May Coleman Stiltner. He was a member of the Poplar Creek Church of Christ and a member of the United States Armed Forces, having served in the United States Navy during World War II and with the U.S. Marines as a Pharmacy Mate. While serving, he received the Presidential Unit Citation Blue Star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons with 3 Stars, American Defense Medal, American Theatre Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was owner-operator of Coleman’s Photo Studios and was a merchant with Coleman and Preece General Merchandise. He was a coal miner, trucker and was foreman for Little Rock Coal Company for 17 years. Upon retirement, he worked with the Buchanan County School System as a maintenance worker.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Karl B. Coleman and Dr. Everette Shannon Coleman.
    He is survived by his wife, Edna Smith Coleman; one daughter, Becky and husband, Danny Keene of Grundy; two sons, Gary and wife, Carol Coleman and Ronald Coleman, all of Grundy; one sister, Ruth and husband, Ersel Stanley, of Hardy, KY; three grandchildren, Josiah and wife, Amy Keene, of Oakwood, J.C. and wife, Christy Coleman of Winston-Salem, NC and Jessie and husband, Mark Baker, of Trinity, NC; six great-grandsons, Bryson, Nathan, Zachary, Auston, Cody and Mark.
    Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 10 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Raffael Farrow and Dennis Wimmer officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of Childs Gentry Post #7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
    Active pallbearers were Danny Keene, Mark Baker, Josiah Keene, J.C. Coleman, David Clevinger, Eddie Hughes, Joe Stanley, Mike Stanley, Pal Thompson and Lee David Altizer.
    Honorary pallbearers were Charles Ratliff, Gerald P. Coleman, Dr. Ramesh Kabaria, Paul Fletcher, Ersel Stanley, Dorsey Smith, Edd Smith, Raymond May and Reual Ratliff.

Franklin Delano Cantrell
(Pilgrim Knob)

     Franklin Delano Cantrell, 73, of Pilgrim Knob, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at his home.
     Born September 29, 1936 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Hufford and Emma Mullins Cantrell. He was a retired coal miner.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Mae Cantrell; four brothers, Tommy Ray and Elliott Cantrell and infant twin brothers; and one great-grandson, Joshua Cantrell.
     He is survived by four sons, Greg Compton of Compton Mountain, Dennis Ray Cantrell and wife, Deborah of Jewell Ridge, Mark Cantrell and wife, Tammy, of Pounding Mill and Alan Wayne Cantrell and wife, Gayle, of Floyd; nine grandchildren, Melissa and Tavis Cantrell, Dallen Cantrell, Desiray Brown, Deanna Keen, Melissa Connor, Caz Cantrell, Shawnna Cantrell and Jessica Cantrell; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Diane Hughes of Pilgrim Knob, Mrs. Otis (Lena) Blankenship of Rosedale and Mrs. Ramey (Theodosia) Compton and Mrs. Randall (Carol) Payne, both of Conway, SC; three brothers, Michael Cantrell and wife, Dott, of Pilgrim Knob and Stanley Cantrell and Robert Cantrell, both of Conway.
     A graveside service was held Saturday, March 6 at Wagner Mullins Cemetery on Compton Mountain with Jay Cole and Darrell Cantrell officiating.
     Pallbearers were nephews and grandsons.

Rita Gail Vanover
(Little Prater)

     Rita Gail Vanover, 47, of the Little Prater section of Grundy, died Saturday, March 6, 2010 at her home following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Belva Jean Sparks Vanover of Grundy and the late Earnest Lee Vanover. She was a member of Vansant Church of Christ and was a caretaker, working with the elderly.
     She is survived by two daughters, Dakota and husband, Mike McCauley and Montana Payne, both of Fredricksburg; four sisters, Jill and husband, Dwayne Ramey and Heather Vanover, all of Grundy, Leigh and husband, Kenny Ratliff of Vansant and Gina and husband, Kevin Newman of St. Cloud, FL; two brothers, Frank Vanover and special friend, Shawna Church, of Grundy and Jeff Lester of Hurley; three grandchildren, Landon, Taylor and Jailin McCauley of Fredricksburg; several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 9 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Jack Wright officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
     Active pallbearers were Frank Vanover, Kenny Ratliff, Kevin Newman, Dwayne Ramey, Brett Ramey and Brandon Ramey.
     Honorary pallbearers were Jeff Lester, Michael Deel, Gary Deel II, Lee Reynolds, Mike McCauley, Cody Ramey, Chase Ramey, staff of Special Care Hospice and staff of Total Home Care.

Clinton Arrington, Sr.
(Bristol, VA)

     Clinton Arrington, Sr., 96, of Bristol, VA, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010.
      Born May 5, 1913 to the late John and Canzada Arrington, he resided in Vansant until 2000, relocating to live with his daughter, Sue, until 2002. He spent the last eight years as a resident of NHC Healthcare in Bristol, VA. He was a member of Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Carrie Arrington; one daughter, Wanda Arrington; one grandson, Gregory; brothers, Floyd, Emmitt, Jim, Harmon and Raymond; and sisters, Rosa bell, Maude, Carrie, Myrtle and Pauline.
     He is survived by two children, Clinton (Gladys) Arrington, Jr. of Vansant and Sue (Clifford) Edwards of Abingdon; seven grandchildren, Kathy (Vester) Deel of Vansant, David (Debbie) Arrington of Davenport, Wanda (Robert) Coleman, Jeff (Kim) Ramey and Andy (Angie) Ramey, all of Bristol, Randy (Shawna) Arrington of Manassas and John Ramey of Elizabethton, TN; two step-grandchildren, David (Tammy) Edwards and Debbie (Eric) Nicholson; seven great-grandchildren, Brad McGlothlin, Niki Ratliff, Dara Hurley, Adam, Morgan and Mark Ramey and Haley Arrington; seven step-great-grandchildren, Ian, Tracy, Candy, Alex and Ryan Nicholson and CJ and Tabitha Edwards; four great-great-grandchildren, Noah, Gavin and Camryn Ratliff and Conner Hurley; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Delores Combs.
      Funeral services were held Friday, March 5 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Joe Edwards, Noah Kim Edwards and Garnell Gilbert officiating. Burial followed in the Arrington Family Cemetery.
      Pallbearers were Jeff, Adam, Mark and Morgan Ramey, Randy and David Arrington.
      Honorary pallbearers were Vester Deel, Clifford Edwards, John and Andy Ramey, Mike Ratliff, Paul Matney and Jack Owens.

Anna Ruth McGuire
(Honaker, VA)

      Anna Ruth Ball McGuire, 70, of the Wysor Valley section of Honaker, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at her home.
      Born January 12, 1940 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Jonah and Nora Pinion Ball. A lifelong resident of the Russell and Tazewell County areas, she was a member of Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Church at Jewell Ridge and was formerly employed by Honaker Mills.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Rene Richie and Angela Baker; one grandson, Cody Breeding; one sister, Dorothy Meadows; and three brothers, Herman, Harold and Garland Ball.
      She is survived by her husband, Kelley McGuire; two daughters, Tammy Richie of Ocala, FL and Brandi Gilbert of Bluefield, VA; three sisters, Laura Gay Brooks and Lola McBride, both of Stoney Ridge and Marie Boyd of Big A Mountain; one granddaughter, Peyton Gilbert; five grandsons, Nicodemus Gilbert, Gideon Gilbert, Travis Breeding, Jonah Richie and Derrek Baker; two special friends and caregivers, Mary Griffith and Chasity McGlothlin; several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services were held Sunday in Honaker with Elders Ezra Davis, Jr. and Farley Beavers officiating. Interment followed in Pinion Cemetery at Swords Creek.
      Pallbearers were Wallace Case, Eric Pruitt, Brian Nidiffer, Josh Hale, Perry Allison, Jr., Brian Allison, Dennis Patterson and George McGuire.


Hubert Dempsey White
(Wilmington, NC)

      Hubert Dempsey White, 84, of Wilmington, NC, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010.
      Born Mary 23, 1925 in Tazewell County, he was the son of the late Tobert and Sally Allen White. He was a former resident of Jewell Ridge.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Whaley White; and three brothers, Junior White, Eugene White and Vincent White.
      He is survived by three sons, Kyle White and wife, Debbie, Emory White and wife, Denise, all of Wilmington and Dale White of Lumber Bridge, NC; one daughter, Donnia Bucklen and husband, Gary, of Whitewood; four grandchildren, Christy Bucklen-Bower, Kori Miller-White, Michael White and Nicole White; one sister, Hazel Keen, of Richlands; several nieces and nephews.
      Memorial services will be held at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum #4, Claypool Hill, on Saturday, March 13 at 11:30 a.m.

Carolyn Ann Owens
(Haysi, VA)

      Carolyn Ann Owens, 69, of Haysi, died Monday, March 8, 2010 at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
      Born March 8, 1941 in Fremont, OH, she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth Mollinger. She was an avid reader, flower gardener and cook for her family. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Rita Jeremy, and one brother, Joe Mollinger.
      She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Jerry Wayne Owens; one son, Terry (Connie) Owens of Breaks; and one daughter, Patty (Joey) O'quinn, of Haysi; six grandchildren, Seth, Jarrod and Chesnee O'quinn and Josh, Adam and Emily Owens; one brother, John Mollinger of Fremont; several nieces and nephews.
      Graveside services will be held today (Thursday), March 11 at 1 p.m. at the Arrington Cemetery in Haysi with Carl Mullins officiating. Those wishing to follow in procession should be at the funeral home by 12 noon.
      Pallbearers will be Seth O'quinn, Jarrod O'quinn, Joey O'quinn, Josh Owens, Adam Owens, Morgan Deel, Kevin Owens and Mickey Owens.
