Anna Lee Matney
(Grundy)

    Anna Lee Benfield Matney, 86, of Grundy, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
    Born in Dickenson County, she was the daughter of the late Lucian and Lonnie Singleton Benfield. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life after arriving in 1949 and was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Haysi High School and James Madison College and was a retired school teacher in Buchanan and Dickenson counties for over 35 years. She was an avid gardener and flower and reading enthusiast and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren "Pete" Matney, April 19, 2003; and three sisters, Ethel Belmany, Marteena Snead and Frances Puckett.
    She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey Warren and wife, Cynthia Matney of Vansant and Robert Preston and wife, Susan Matney, of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Stephanie and husband, Matthew Wheawill of Richmond and Meredith Matney of Pikeville, KY; several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, February 1 at Buchanan First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeff Porter officiating. Entombment followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum, Richlands.
    Active pallbearers were men of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church.
    Honorary pallbearers were Linda Horne, Leona Horne, Laura Crawford, Bonnie Keen, Delsie Mullins, Maxine Perry, Judy Hurley, Dorothy Newsome, Nila Coleman, Sue Lester, Melissa Anderson and the staff of Special Care Hospice and Home Health.
    Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to Buchanan First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1339, Grundy, VA.

Estil Ferl Nuckels
(Mavisdale)

     Estil Ferl Nuckels, 77, of Mavisdale, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at his home following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Henry Clarence and Alta Mae Looney Nuckels. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended Guiding Light Freewill Baptist Church. He graduated from Council High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a former employee of Thompson & Litton Engineering and was a retired building contractor.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Delores G. Maurice and Beulah A. Rodriguez McCane; and one brother, Edward H. Nuckels.
     He is survived by his wife, Pauline Coleman Nuckels; one sister, Lorene and husband, George Paris, of Jackson, MS; one brother, Jerry Nuckels of Millsboro, DE; several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, February 3 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed in the Hess & Nuckels Cemetery on Fletcher's Ridge near Council. Full military rites were conducted at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel by members of Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
     Active pallbearers were Earl Brown, Nelson Brown, Feril Brown, Allen (Jabo) Addison, Kendall Looney, Joe Cook, James Coleman and Ed Brown.
     Honorary pallbearers were Ken Fletcher, Jerry Looney, Ervin Nuckels, Kermit Street, Harlis Keen, Sonny Perkins, Bobby Street and special caregivers, Linda Coleman, Pat Baldwin, Jamie Stiltner, Beth Matney and Shellie Stout.

Harold Fred Justus
(Hurley)

     Harold Fred Justus, 76, of Hurley, died Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
      Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late James A. and Mary Lester Justus. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Hurley Presbyterian Church. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he received the OCC Medal Germany, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a retired coal miner and an avid fishing, camping, reading and NASCAR enthusiast. He was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company and a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dora Stacy Blankenship and Mary Justus Blankenship; and five brothers, Edgar Justus, Earl Justus, Bobby Justus, Billy Justus and Jack Justus.
      He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Waline Stacy Justus; three sisters, Ora Hilton, Marie Smith and Dottie and husband, Kennith Wolford, all of Hurley; one brother, Garfield Dan and wife, Gail Justus, of Hurley; several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held today (Thursday), February 4 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Stacy officiating. Burial will follow in the J.C. Lester Cemetery on Pounding Mill near Hurley. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday with a service set for 7 p.m. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of Childs Gentry Post No. 7360 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
      Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

Carl Matney
(Chilhowie, VA)

      Carl Matney, 85, of Chilhowie, formerly of Buchanan County, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Valley Health Care in Chilhowie.
      Born November 21, 1924 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late George and Louise Rowe Matney. He was a retired coal miner and a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Goldie and Myrtle Matney, and one brother, Russell Matney.
      Funeral services were held Sunday, January 31 at Virginia Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with Evg. Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Military graveside rites were conducted by Childs Gentry Post 7360 of the VFW.

Tivis Benford Boyd
(Richlands, VA)

      Tivis "Midge" Benford Boyd, 62, of Richlands, died January 30, 2010 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.
      Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late Tivis Simmie and Estelle Deel Boyd. He was a free lance welder who had worked for numerous companies.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Benjamin Franklin and Margaret Jane Deel; paternal grandparents, Joseph W. and Rachel Virginia Boyd; and by four brothers, Harold Lloyd, Roger Eulis, Tony Lee and Phillip Ray Boyd.
      He is survived by his former wife and mother of his children, Barbara Ann Boyd; one daughter, Kimberley S. "Peanut" Boyd and fiance, Billy Pfarr of Maryland; one son, Kevin Shane Boyd and fiance, Destiny Heltzel of Maryland; one sister, Deborah L. Boyd Bowman and husband, Danny Lee (Midge's Ride Buddy) of Richlands; two brothers, Billy E. Boyd and wife, Josephine, of Mooresburg, TN and Frederick J. Boyd and wife, Monica, of Clinchco; special companion and friend, Bonnie Marcano of Richlands; granddaughters, Tanya Brooke Boyd and Dakota Lorraine Pfarr; grandson, John Allen Bruce; one great-grandson, James Christopher Bills; nieces, Sharon K. Nelson, Lisa L. Shortridge and Megan L. Boyd; nephews, Billy Joe, Kevin D., Marty E., Phillip Allen, Trevor J. Boyd, Scott A. and Jamison L. Bowman.
      Funeral services will be held today (Thursday), February 4 at 1 p.m. at Coleman's Chapel Church in Russell Prater. Per his request, s special singing service featuring his niece, Megan Boyd and other singers will be held instead of the traditional funeral service. A special short reading will be carried out by Freddy Boyd and Debbie Bowman. Interment will follow in the Joseph W. Boyd Cemetery in Russell Prater. Friends may call Wednesday evening at Coleman's Chapel Church from 6-9 p.m.
      Pallbearers will be his nephews and Travis Hicks.
      Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Bowman, Wake Forest Staff, Clinch Valley Medical Center staff, Dr. Pillai, Dr. Motos, Dr. Winaker, Dr. Jaborian, Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Hanoa.

Virginia Horne
(Lebanon, VA)

     Virginia Coleman Horne, 84, of Lebanon, died Friday, January 29, 2010 at her home.
      Born September 28, 1925 in Drill, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Sylvester and Maudie Belle Cook Coleman. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a 1943 graduate of Honaker High School and attended East Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church. She was a retired postmaster, having 30 years of service at the Rowe Post Office.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Lehman Coleman, Linkous Coleman and Russell Coleman, and infant brothers and sisters.
      She is survived by her husband, Estil Horne; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Patty Horne of Oakwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Bob Keen of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Jennie Shortridge and husband, Larry, of Rowe, Kenny Horne and wife, Melissa, of Oakwood, Bobby Keen and wife, Lee Anne of Lebanon and Mike Keen and wife, Pam, of Clarksville, TN; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Shortridge of Washington, D.C., Matthew Shortridge with the U.S. Air Force stationed in Iraq, Austin Keen of Lebanon and Ashleigh Patrick of Mobile, AL; one sister, Verdie Martin of Honaker; three sisters-in-law, Irene Coleman of Fredericksburg, Dorothy Cook of Rural Retreat and Doris Kruty of Culpeper; several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services were held Monday in Honaker with the Revs. Larry Robinson, Ancil Childress and Kenny Horne officiating. Interment followed in the Russell Memorial Cemtery in Lebanon.
      Pallbearers were Bobby Keen, Kenny Horne, Larry Shortridge, Jacob Shortridge, Matthew Shortridge, Bob Martin, Raymond Horne, Freddie Coleman, Johnny Coleman, Carl Coleman, Ricky Coleman, Randy Coleman, Jimmy Cook and Mike Keen.
      Honorary pallbearer was Austin Keen.


Amanda Kaye Clevinger
(Kingsport, TN)

       Amanda Coleman Clevinger, 29, of Kingsport, TN, formerly of Tazewell, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
       Born in Wise, she was a daughter of Lando and Betty Dales Deel of Kingsport. She was of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
      She was preceded in death by two brothers, Steven and Barry Keith Deel; maternal grandparents, Noah and Dicey Dales; and paternal grandparents, George and Missouri Deel.
       In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, David Allen Clevinger; children, Steven Mark Coleman and Emily Kaye Coleman, both of the home; one sister, Pam (Jeff) Cantrell of Johnson City, TN; nieces, Kimberly, Jessica and Sarah; one nephew, Jeffrey; several aunts and uncles.
      Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 3 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Frank Newsome, Eddie Newsome, Danny Yates and Buster Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the George W. Deel Cemetery in Greenbrier.
      Pallbearers were family and friends.

Pamela Marie Mullins
(Haysi, VA)

      Pamela Marie Mullins, 46, of Haysi, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, KY.
      Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George C. and Elsie Cline Mitchell. She was last employed as an assistant manager at Newberry Grocery and was a member of Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Mullins, and brothers, Larry and Rocky.
      She is survived by a daughter, Kelia; two sisters, Linda (David) Yates of Haysi and Brenda Tiller of Abingdon; one brother, David Mitchell of Haysi; nieces and nephews, Amber Mullins, Aaron Yates, Billy Tiller, Renee Presenda, Cheyenne Mitchell, Lindsey Mitchell and Lauren Lunsford; great-nieces and nephews, Kaleb Mullins, Annabella Mullins, Josh Rash, Breanna Rash, Jacy Lunsford, Carmen Birvette and Andriux Zapata.
      Funeral services were held Saturday, January 30 at Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church with Danny Sluss, Bill Rose and Keith Dotson officiating. Burial followed in the Mitchell Cemetery, Haysi.
      Pallbearers were family and friends.
