Roscoe Elswick
(Big Rock)

    Roscoe Elswick, 95, of Big Rock, died Monday, November 10, 2008 at his home.
    Born February 9, 1913, in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Anderson and Clementine Ramey Elswick.
    He was a commissioned Kentucky Colonel, an avid carpenter, tape maker and a distinguished 50-year member of District No. 28 of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a former employee of Buchanan County Coal Corporation and worked at #2 Tipple at Big Rock, until he was disabled by blindness. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and was of the Christian Faith. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Goldie (Mullins) Elswick; five sisters, Lydia McGlothlin, Hester Giles, Florence Ratliff, Cora Williams and Callie Belcher; three brothers, Gordon, Ira and James Elswick and his infant twin brother, Woodrow Elswick; one son-in-law, James Taylor; one grandson, Chris Taylor; and one great-grandchild.
     He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Price Elswick of Big Rock; three daughters, Emogene Taylor, of Feds Creek, KY; Avon and husband, Vernie Keen, of Spotsylvania, VA; and Glenda and husband, Darrell Hugues, of Kingsport, TN; four sons, Hubert and wife, Sarah Elswick, of Big Rock; Roscoe Jr. and wife, Karol Elswick, of Abingdon; Paul and wife, Janne Elswick, of Big Rock; and Danny and wife, Darlene Elswick of Big Rock; two step-daughers, Ernestine and husband, Larry Looney, of Grundy; and Dorothy Sloan, of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
     Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the New Hope Christian Church, on Slate Creek near Grundy, with Evangelist William L. Neeley officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
     Friends may call Grundy Funeral Home Chapel where services were held Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. Mr. Elswick will be taken to the New Hope Christian Church, Slate Creek, Thursday morning at 9 a.m. to await the funeral home at 11 a.m.
     Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
     Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews.

Lloyd Charles
(Hurley)

     Lloyd Charles, 72, of Hurley, died Thursday, November 6, 2008 at a Bristol, Tennessee hospital.
     Born June 1, 1936 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Lundy and Artile Taylor Charles. He was a retired coal miner and member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a member of the Hurley Church of God in Jesus Name, where he served as an Elder. He was also a member of the Knox Creek Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and was Chief for the past 30 years. He was a forest Warden with the Virginia Department of Forestry for 12 years. He has truly enjoyed volunteering his time to the community by providing food and many, many services. He will be greatly missed.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son; three bothers, Elzie, Granville and Paul Charles; and one sister, Maggie Helton.
     He is survived by his wife, Nelline Charles, of Hurley; one son, Gary Lloyd Charles and wife, Kim, of Hurley; one daughter, Vanessa Colleen Charles, of Grundy; two beloved grandchildren, Kaitlin Alexandria Charles and Sydney Danielle Charles; several nieces and nephews; and six sisters, Crecie Bowen and husband, John, of Colonial Heights, VA; Opal St. Clair, of Grundy; Tilda Dotson, of Hurley; Erma Lester and husband, Monroe, of Hurley; and Gertrude Charles and Linnie Vandyke, both of Lynchburg, VA.
     Services were held Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Virginia Funeral Home Chapel with Russell King, Douglas Blankenship and Charlie Kennedy officiating. Entombment followed at Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
     Pallbearers were members of the Knox Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Brian Dotson, Tracy Casey, Kevin Costa, James Lester, Bobby Dotson, Doug Melvin, Ted Daniels, Earl Phillips, James Duty, Zachary Dotson, Andy Daniels and Chucky Estep.
      Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Matney, Richard Chaffins, Luther Lester, Jim Lester, Roger Lester, Ezra Estep, Eddie Wilburn, Billy Ward, Charlie Kennedy, Monroe Lester, John Bowens and Pat Justus.
     Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy was in charge of arrangements.


Esket Lee (Pat) Boardwine
(Leemaster)

     Esket Lee (Pat) Boardwine, 76, of Leemaster, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at at Kingsport, Tennessee hospital.
     Born October 18, 1932, he was the son of the late Lee Burton (Red) Boardwine and Susie Broks Price Boardwine. He was a purchasing agent for L&D Well Services. Pat was also a faithful member of the Haysi Church of Christ.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary Avanell Boyd Boardwine, of Leemaster; two sons, Jeffrey Boardwine and wife, Carolyn, of Pounding Mill and William Boardwine and wife, Lisa, of Grundy; three grandchildren, Leah Boardwine and Ashley Boardwine, of Grundy, and Ashleigh Justus, of Pounding Mill; one sister, Betty Sue Petty, of Virginia Beach, VA.
     Funeral services will be held Friday, November 14, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, on Slate Creek, with Evangelist Steve Hagy and Tony Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, at Big Rock.
      Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday at Virginia Funeral Home Chapel where services will be held at 7 p.m.
      Pallbearers will be Clint Ratliff, Carl Anderson, Ronny Coleman, Bud Matney, Tim Deel, Ralph Rowe, Brandon Boyd and Chuckey Dotson.
      Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Boyd, Virgil (Jiggs) Lawson, Rita Boyd, Dave Robbins, Englin Woods, Mickey Tiller, Ken Boyd and Clyde Hibbitts.

Mary Ilean Sanders Stanley
(Rowe)

      Mary Ilean Sanders Stanely, 77, of Rowe, died Tuesday, November 11, 2008 in a Richlands, Virginia hospital.
     Born July 29, 1931 in Rowe, she was a daughter of Sparrell Henderson and Dora Whitt Blankenship. She spent most of her life in the Buchanan County area and was a member of Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Sanders; her second husband, Arnold Stanley; one son, James Carlis Sanders; three brothers, Arnold Blankenship, Clifford Blankenship and Willard Blankenship; and two sisters, Lona Blankenship Street and Carrie Blankenship.
      She is survived by two sons, Roger Lee Sanders and wife, Brenda, of Whitewood and Terry Dean Sanders and wife, Leona, of Franklensville, NC; two daughters, Adrine Horn, of Richlands and Nadine Hurley and husband, Terry, of Honaker; three sisters, Mozelle Kampouris, of St. Louis, Missouri; Daisy Burress, of Abingdon; and Mavis Martin, of Lebanon; five brothers, Lawson Blankenship of Vansant; Eck Blankenship, of Alexandria; L.D. Blankenship and Curtis Blankenship, both of Rowe; and Harlon Blankenship, of Honaker; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008, in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Ancil Childress and Rev. Troy Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
      Pallbearers will be Joshua Vandyke, Roger Sanders, Nick Kampouris, Jeremy Sanders, Brian Rutherford, Leon Meade, Billy Moore and Jim Blankenship.

Ruth Helen Brown
(Hurley)

     Ruth Helen Brown, 74, of Hurley, died Friday, November 7, 2008 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands following an extended illness.
     Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Wiley and Lovis Osborne Brown. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a wonderful homemaker.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers.
     She is survived by her husband, Dennis Whitt; three daughters, Brenda and husband, Robert Hurley, of Hurley, Rebecca “Becky” Justus of Grundy and Michelle Hurley, of Wytheville; three sons, William “Bill” Justus of Grundy, Michael Justus of Richlands and Ricky Justus of Ohio; one sister, Lorraine Stacy of Detroit, MI; one brother, Bill Brown of Ohio; several grandchildren.
     Services were held Tuesday, November 11 at New Beginning in Jesus Name, Paw Paw, KY with Pastor Donnie Prater officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Tree Cemetery on Old Lester’s Fork Road near Hurley.
     Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

Basil Lester
(Maxie)

     Basil (Peanut) Lester, 61, of Maxie, died Friday, November 7, 2008 following a brief illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Jack and Estella Wright Lester. He wasa lifelong resident of Buchanan County and attended the Old Regular Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and worked for Wellmore Energy and Apollo Coal Company as a Foreman.
     He is survived by his wife, Betty McClanahan Lester, of Grundy; one son, Bradley Dwayne and wife, Lisa Lester of Grundy; two granddaughters, Victoria (Tori) Lester of Grundy, and Tayah Elizabeth Lester of Grundy.
      Services were held Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy, with elders Billie Campbell, William McClanahan, Frank Newsome and Tim Brown officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
      Active pallbearers were Todd Belcher, Russell Owens, Ralph Ratliff, Jimmy Justus, Randy Edwards, Chris Smith, Ronnie Belcher and Ken Griggsby.
      Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Apollo Coal Company, Gary Prater and John Fields.

Beverly Lynn Stacy Smith
(Grundy)

     Beverly Lynn Stacy Smith, 43, of Grundy, died Monday, October 20, 2008 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Grundy, following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of Phyllis Baker Stacy, of Hurley, and the late Carl Stacy. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a wonderful homemaker.
      She is survived by her husband, Billy Junior Smith, of Grundy; two daughters, Courtney Noel Smith and Santana Shaelyn Smith, both of the home; one son, Gregory James Clevinger, of Vansant; mother-in-law, Ann Smith and husband, Archie Fulcher, of Eden, NC; two sisters, Carla Honaker, of Claypool Hill; and Teresa Kennedy, of Hurley; two brothers, Harless Ray (Bo) Stacy and Greg Stacy, both of Hurley; and special friend Ann Stiltner.
      In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law Bill Smith.
      Services were held Thursday, October 23 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy, with Rev. Danny Hess, Elder Jim Bob Blankenship and Evangelis Rafael Farrow officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
      Active pallbearers were Brandon Evans, Bobby Cox and family and friends.

Nadine Thomas
(Vansant)

     Nadine Thomas, 66, of Vansant, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Riley and Virgie Boyd Thomas. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. She was of the Protestant Faith and was a wonderful homemaker.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Cecil, J.C., Sidney, Ralph and Frank Thomas.
      She is survived by two brothers, Eugene Thomas and Edward Thomas, both of Vansant. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
      Services were held Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Hurley officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
     Active pallbeares were Douglas Thomas, Gregory Thomas, Gary Thomas, Ryan Thomas, Jim Brown and Paul Smith.

Frances C. Blankenship
(Breaks)

     Frances C. Blankenship, 85, of Waterhole Road, died Monday, November 10, 2008 at Mountain View Health Care in Elkhorn City, KY.
     Born in Canada, she retired from Masonic Temple in Detroit, MI, where she was an accountant. She was a member of the Breaks Church of Christ and was of the Chippewa tribe.
     She is survived by one son, David Blankenship and one sister-in-law, Helen Mullins, both of Breaks; and one granddaughter, Kimberly.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Breaks Church of Christ with Clint Stuart officiating. Burial will follow in the Blankenship Cemetery, Breaks, VA.
      Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
     The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the church with an evening service at 7 p.m.

Bobby Lynn Teffeteller
(Johnson City, TN)

     Bobby Lynn Teffeteller, 59, of Johnson City, Tenn., died Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at his home.
      Born in Blount County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Robert and Sara Keller Teffeteller. He was of the Christian faith.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Kyle Teffeteller.
     He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a retired surveyor.
     Known as a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a good cook and loved to barbecue. He enjoyed spending time on his computer.
      He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Regina Maye Ramey Teffeteller of Johnson City; one son, Robert Matthew Teffeteller and wife, Sara, of Johnson City; two brothers, Dennis Ray Teffeteller and wife, Melissa, of Seymour, Tenn. and Stanley Teffeteller and wife, Jean, of Aurora, NC; grandchildren, Samantha and Kierstin Teffeteller; and several nieces and nephews.
       A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, November 8 at Tetrick Funeral Services with Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. A graveside serive with military honors followed in Washington County Memory Gardens.
      Family members served as pallbearers.

Maudie G. Street
(Abingdon, VA)

      Maudie G. Street, 85, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, November 5, 2008.
      Born October 11, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harve and Matilda O'Quinn. A wife, mother, grandma and friend, she was of the Pentecostal Holliness faith.
      In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Link M. Street and first husband, Clair Rowe; children, Sue Rowe Loflin, Joan Rowe Keen, and Rufus (Buck) and wife, Anna (Sis) Rowe; infant daughter, Marie Rowe; sisters, Myrtle Jackson, Lacy Compton and Dollie Sisk; brothers, Roley O'Quinn and Tivis O'Quinn; stepchildren, Betty Jo Street, Jerry Street and Wanda Owens.
      She is survived by her daughter, Gay Rowe, of Abingdon; sons, Harold Rowe and wife, Lilo, of Bristol, Tenn. and Danny Rowe and wife, Barbara, of Abingdon; one half-sister, Bonnie McGhee of Oregon; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great gandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
       Services were held Thursday, November 6, 2008 at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Home in Abingdon, with Reverend Ronnie Matney and Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
      Pallbearers were grandsons and family members.

Blanche Sexton Dellinger
(Bristol, VA)

      A. Blanche Sexton Dellinger, 75, of Bristol, VA, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at Grace Health Care in Abingdon.
      Born January 13, 1933 in Russell County, VA, she is a daughter of the late William Jay and Nanny Gray Sexton. She lived most of her life in Buchanan County until 1985 when she moved to Bristol.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfield Wise "Babe" Dellinger and her brothers, William Jay, Jor Robert and Samuel Lee Sexton.
      She is survived by two sons, William Earl Dellinger and wife, Keeta; and Winfield Wise Dellinger, Jr.; one daughter, Dianna Lynn Moore and husband, Donnie; grandchildren, Joe Robert Dellinger, Stacy Charles, Bill Dellinger, Brandi Dellinger, Cheyann Decota Dellinger and Heather Boyd; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Juanita Sexton, Shirley Mae Bowman and Mary Ellen Street; brothers, David Sexton, Elmer ''John" Sexton, Roy James Sexton, Keith Sexton and Darrell Sexton; cousin Hubert ''Burhead Sexton"; and several nieces and nephews.
     Services were held Monday, November 11, 2008 at Russell Memorial Cemetery.
     Pallbearers were friends and members of the family.

Walter Stacy
(Abingdon)

      Walter Stacy, 84, of Abingdon, carpenter extraordinaire, died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the home of his daughter, Gwinda Mullins, following a brief illness.
      Born April 26, 1924 in Paynesville, WV, he was a son of the late Charlie Stacy and Pattie Church Stacy. His maternal grandparents were the late Wiley and Victoria Church of Paynesville, WV. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, the late John R. and Katherine Stacy, also of Paynesville, WV.
       He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was currently attending the Macedonia Church of Christ in Abingdon. He was much loved and respected in the community. After becoming disabled as a coal miner with Jewell Ridge Coal Corp., he became a carpenter by trade, building not only furniture and homes, but a strong foundation for his family and friends alike.
      In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sarah Jane Kennedy Stacy; one daughter, Linda June Stacy; sisters, Erma Boze, Chloe and Francis Stacy; brothers, Willard, Edward and England Stacy; and step-brother, Burl Stacy.
     He is survived by his children, Gwinda Sue Mullins of Abingdon; Lois Ann Mitchem of Riverview, FL; Donna Gay Kramb of Catlett, VA; and Danny Ray Stacy, of Gordonsville, VA; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and sisters, Bessie Keen of Richlands and Flora Vickers of Goodwater, AL.
      Services were held Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon, with Pastors Ronnie Musick and Hobert Kennedy officiating.
      A graveside committal and burial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 13, in Stafford Memorial Park in Stafford, VA, with Pastor Bill Bates officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
