Haysi Flurry
Stops Clintwood Early, 34-21
Tigers Earn Third
Consecutive Dickenson Miner's Bowl Trophy |
|
by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
It’s
called the Miner’s Bowl, and it’s a major deal
for Dickenson County football fans.
A fast start helped
Haysi start its season off
right with an impressive, 34-21, win over county rival
Clintwood Friday night at Sandlick.
A passing attack
that netted nearly 100 first-half
yards helped the Tigers jump out to a 20-0
first-quarter lead.
"We came out really fired up," Haysi
quarterback
Lance Compton said. "We had two weeks to prepare for
this game and we were really pumped up. We just wanted
to get out there and hit somebody."
Compton threw for
one touchdown and accounted for
124 of the Tigers’ 148 overall passing yards. Nathan
Boyd caught six passes for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Five different Tigers reached the end zone.
"Nathan Boyd
has great hands," Compton added. "All
my receivers did a good job and my offensive line did
an awesome job."
Chad Barton capped
Haysi’s opening drive with a
10-yard touchdown run. The Tigers traded one turnover
for two before building a big lead.
Greg Barton forced a
fumble and Chad Barton picked
off a Clintwood pass. The sequence set up the Tigers’
second score, a five-yard TD pass from Compton to Boyd
with 3:03 remaining in quarter number one. Cody Yates
returned a punt 36 yards for another score with 32
seconds left in the period.

Special Teams Mistakes Cost
Panthers in 15-10 Non-District Loss to Bland |
|
Bland County made a pair of first-half touchdowns
stand up as the Bears edged the Twin Valley Panthers
15-10 at the Bland County High School sports complex.
Special teams mistakes by the Panthers helped Bland
County (1-0) score both touchdowns. A bad punt snap
set up a first-quarter score. The Bears second TD came
after a short punt by Twin Valley (0-2) a short time
later.
Tyler Pennington ran eight yards for a
touchdown with
2:36 remaining in the opening period. The Bland
quarterback tossed a five-yard TD pass to Thomas
Willis on the first play of the second quarter and the
Bears took a 12-0 lead into the locker room at
halftime.
Another bad punt snap by Twin Valley gave
Bland County
another scoring chance in the third quarter, but a
holding penalty on the Bears ended that threat. Bland
had 106 yards in penalties.
"Our mistakes on special teams hurt
us," Twin Valley
coach Charlie Vandyke said. "We have to work on that
and understand that special teams will win ballgames
and lose ballgames."
Twin Valley looked like a different team
in the second
half, especially in the fourth quarter. Wyatt Justus
capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a nine-yard
touchdown pass to Zack Wimmer.
The Panthers added a two-point conversion
on a pass
from Jory Rife to Matthew Baldwin, but could not get
into the end zone again, despite a couple of
opportunities.
