Haysi Captures BDD Golf Title; Simpson Named 'Coach of Year'

Justin Stanley, Haysi and Twin Valley have been on top in Black Diamond District golf all season long.
Monday’s BDD Tournament was no exception.
Stanley shot a sparkling six-over-par, 76 over 18 holes on a grey, mostly overcast day, claiming tournament medalist honors at Willowbrook Country Club by nine strokes. He got plenty of help from Juan Garcia and Lance Compton and helped Haysi capture the BDD team title.
A senior, Stanley was named BDD Player of the Year. Twin Valley’s Robert Simpson was named BDD Coach of the Year after leading a sophomore-laden team to several regular season wins. The Panthers settled for second on Monday.
Haysi finished first with a team score of 361, some 24 shots ahead of Twin Valley (385). The Tigers and Panthers both earned spots in Region D play Monday, Oct. 2, at Jonesville. Council (460) was third and Honaker (560) finished fourth Monday.
Haysi and Twin Valley each placed three golfers among the top eight individuals at the hilly Breaks area course. The Tigers’ Juan Garcia and Twin Valley sophomore Jacob St. Clair each shot an 85 and tied for second place.
Honaker’s Ethan Taylor qualified for the region by shooting a 90, which was good for a fifth-place finish. Haysi’s Lance Compton (95) tied for sixth and Council’s Kegan Bostic (96) was seventh. Twin Valley sophomores Hunter Simpson (95) and Ethan Prater (99) also finished among the top eight.
All Haysi and Twin Valley golfers will join their team at Jonesville. Also qualifying as individuals were Honaker’s Chuck Gent and three other Council golfers: Coty Breeding, Chris Rife and Jon Rife.
The top six finishers Monday were named to the 2006
All-BDD Team which included Stanley, Compton and Garcia from Haysi; St. Clair and Simpson from Twin Valley and Ethan Taylor of Honaker.

Haysi Blanks Honaker in BDD Thriller, 10-0

by Mike Stiltner
Sports Reporter

The Haysi Tigers opened up Black Diamond District action this past Friday blanking the Honaker Tigers, 10-0, at Fuller Field in Honaker.
In what turned out to be a classic BDD contest, the defense from both teams came out fired up and ready to play as neither offense could gain substantial yardage on the ground in the first half.
The score was deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime when Allen Owens showed why Haysi Coach James Colley can count on him. The sophomore place-kicker nailed a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter to give Haysi all the points it would need.
"I trust Allen (Owens) on any field goal try. He's a super kicker," Colley said. "He's been kicking ever since he started playing football and anytime we're in his range, we'll let him kick."
The Haysi defense got a key stop in the second quarter after Honaker a 15-yard pass from Justin Hall to Michael Tiller set the Tigers up at the Haysi 43-yard line. Two plays later Haysi defender Chad Barton got the first of his two interceptions to nullifiy the Honaker threat.
Barton got his second pick late in the fourth quarter to seal the game for Haysi, which forced four turnovers and held Honaker to 105 yards of total offense. Honaker kept Haysi out of the end zone until the final minute.
