Herma Brown
(Looney's Creek)

  Herma Norene Shreve Brown, 91, of the Looney's Creek section of Rt. 2, Grundy, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 following an extended illness.
  Born in Tazewell County, she was a daughter of the late Robert W. and Ella Mae Lester Shreve. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of the Church of Jesus. She was a homemaker and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Brown, June 8, 1965; one daughter, Lois Ann Brown; four sisters and six brothers.
  She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Rowe and Betty and husband, William Ramsey, all of Bryan, OH; two sons, Charles Clayton and wife, Audrey Brown and Joe Bill Brown, all of Grundy; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, September 22 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Charlie Kennedy and Doug Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Robert Lester, Edward Smith, Frennie Justice, Chuck Crabtree, Lonnie Wayne Wolford, Rufus Lester and Joe Stiltner.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Delphine Stiltner
(Poplar Creek)

  Delphine Lane Stiltner, 70, of the Poplar Creek section of Rt. 2, Grundy, died Sunday, September 24, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Homer and Virgie Foster Lane. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bethlehem Regular Baptist Church #2. She was a former employee of Dominion Bank, a volunteer worker for Buchanan General Hospital and a former active leader with the Girl Scouts. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her children, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Stanton Stiltner, July 1, 1994; and by one brother, Douglas Layne.
  She is survived by two daughters, Connie Ratliff of Richlands and Genny and husband, Charles (Buzz) Bohon of Cedar Bluff; two sons, Patrick Allen and wife, Kimberly Stiltner of Grundy and David Joseph and wife, Sandy Stiltner of Abingdon; six sisters, Phyllis and husband, Richard Weller of Laurel, MD, Jean and husband, Marty Meade, of Wildwood, IL, Mickey and husband, Lamont Pedersen of Tazewell, Carol Miller of Richlands, Sue Peoples of Hamilton, AL and Wanda Gay and husband, Gene Hall, of Atlanta, GA; two brothers, James Layne and Joe, and wife, Edith Lane, all of Kenosha, WI; seven grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday, September 26 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Aven Owens and Toy Looney officiating. Burial followed in the Stiltner Cemetery near Bethlehem Regular Baptist Church #1 on Poplar Creek.
  Active pallbearers were Sean Stiltner, Jonathan Ratliff, Chuck Bohon, Andrew Stiltner, Jerry Colley and Brian Vass.
  Honorary pallbearers were Robert Tate, Robert Stiltner, Clinton Stiltner, Hensley Stiltner, Jerry Edwards, Bill Neeley, Richard Weller, Marty Meade, Lamont Pedersen, Gene Hall, Teresa Underwood, Melanie Short and nursing staff of Preferred Hospice, and Community Home Health Service.


Coy Stiltner, Sr.
(Maxie)

  Coy Stiltner, Sr., 97, of Maxie, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Charles and Sophie OQuinn Stiltner. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, was of the Baptist faith and a retired employee of Harman Mining Company with 45 years of service and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7025.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Estus Fay Clevinger Stiltner, September 7, 2003; two sons, Jerry Allen Stiltner and Coy Stiltner, Jr.; one granddaughter, three grandsons, four sisters and five brothers.
  He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte and husband, Ronnie Chambers of Maxie and Shirley and husband, Fenn Bevil of Clearwater, FL; two sons, Kermit C. Stiltner of North Part, FL and Robert D. and wife, Glena Stiltner, of Pounding Mill; one sister, Ivel Fletcher of Vansant; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, September 22 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Shea Shrader officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were grandsons.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. J.P. Sutherland, Jr., Ray Hutchinson, Ruth Hutchinson, Jim Goff and Jerry Matney.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

 

Ezra Baldwin
(Council)

  Ezra Crawford Baldwin, 69, of Council, died Friday, September 22, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Drill, he was a son of the late Henry and Kathleen Ball Baldwin. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a disabled coal miner and a United States Army veteran.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence Baldwin and Winfred Baldwin, and one sister, Estelle Horn.
  He is survived by his wife, Fonnie Baldwin; one son, Timothy Baldwin; five sisters, Ruby Mitchell of Council, Bertie Lester of Drill, Hazel Musick of Lebanon, Ethel Lee of Galion, OH and Delphia Hubbard of Shelby, OH; two granddaughters, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Kyle Ratliff officiating. Interment followed in the Baldwin Cemetery at Drill.
  Pallbearers were Larry Baldwin, Shannon Barton, Brock Barton, Brady Harris, Harless Harris, Roger Harris and Charles Stevens.


Laura Virginia Rash
(Grundy)

  Laura Virginia Hensley Rash, 75, of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Sunday, September 24, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Ella Lester Hensley. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was of the Protestant faith. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Eugene Rash, February 28, 2006; one son, Larry Eugene Rash; two sisters, Juanita Estep and Wanda (Sally) Spencer; and two brothers, Alvie and William Hensley.
  She is survived by three daughters, Connie Matney of Hurley, Tamela and husband, Frank Sparks of Wolford and Pamela and husband, Bill Amburgey of Lebanon; one sister, Alma and husband, Robert Harvey of Lakeland, FL; three brothers, Carl (Buddy) Hensley of Oliver Springs, TN, Bennie Ralph Hensley of Church Hill and Leonard Raymond Hensley of Las Vegas, NV; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, September 27 at Grundy Funenral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Edwards officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dianne Elswick, Donna Mounts, Bobby Justus, Ellen Howell, Jodie Belcher, girls of Healing Hands Home Health, Lizz Justus and Special Care Hospice.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cora L. Boyd

(Davenport, VA)

  Cora L. Boyd, 97, of Davenport, died Monday, September 25, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late John Morgan and Caroline Deel Boyd. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of Boyd Ridge Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Elbert M. Boyd; one daughter, Ollie May Charles; two sisters, Lillie Ratliff and Rosa Horn; two brothers, Ellis Boyd and Frenchman Boyd; one step-daughter, Magnolia Perkins; and three step-sons, Emerson, Aubert and Tollie Boyd.
  She is survived by two sons, Delmer Boyd and fiance', Ethel Stilwell of Davenport and Arlen and wife, Gloria Boyd of Bristol, TN; one brother, Curtis Boyd of Prater; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), September 28 at Haysi Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Denver Barton, D.J. Barton and Carl Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Boyd Family Cemetery, Davenport.
  Pallbearers will be Gregory Boyd and friends of the family.

Clyde Keene, Sr.
(N. Tazewell, VA)

  Clyde (Pops) Keene, Sr., 82, of North Tazewell, died Thursday, September 21, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William D. (Bill) Keene and Thursy Skeens Keene. He was a U.S. Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean Conflict. During his military service, he served tours in Alaska, Washington, Panama Canal, France, Germany, Italy, South America, Africa, Cuba, Puerto Rico and El Salvador. He retired from Jewell Smokeless Fuel Coal & Coke Company.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Myrtle Dales Keene; three sisters, Shelby Jean Lester, Flossie Keene Ramey and Gladys Looney; and three brothers, Kelly Keene, Thomas Keene and Agie Keene.
  He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, with whom he had made his home for the past 13 years and were his caregivers, Susan and Larry Keene, of Baptist Valley, North Tazewell; son, James and wife, Donna Keene of Rocky Mount, VA and son, Clyde Keene, Jr. and wife, Kellie, of Abingdon; four sisters, Pamela Spence and Patty Keene, both of Grundy, Betty Prater of Lebanon and Jackie Stiltner of Abingdon; five brothers, Bobby Keene of Keen Mountain, Elster Keene of Washington State, Clayton Keene of California, Ronnie Keene of Abingdon and LeRoy Blevins of Feds Creek, KY; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, September 24 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with Walter Schwitzerlett and Evg. Mike Trent officiating.
  Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were Avon Ward, Randy Keene, Bill Bandy, Larry Todd Keene, Richard Kinser and Nathan Keene.

Betty Fay Keisman
(Lorain, OH)

  Betty Fay Keisman, (nee Deel), 70, of Lorain, OH, formerly of Harman, died Monday, August 21, 2006 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she moved from Virginia to Lorain 10 years ago. She was a member of Church on the North Coast in Lorain for many years.
  She was preceded in death by her parents, Finis and Mary Stiltner Deel; one brother, Edgar Deel; and one sister, Elizabeth Parker.
  She is survived by her husband, Billy R. Keisman; one daughter, Cynthia Chambers of Grundy; four sons, Kenneth Keisman of Louisville, KY, Denver Keisman of Norwalk, Timothy Keisman of Amherst and Tony Keisman of Zion, IL; five sisters, Reba Smith of Grundy, Doris Rice of Harman, Thelma Grace Jones of Virginia, Kathy Ashby of Hiddenite, NC and Lorna Gay Yates of Vermilion; two brothers, Otis Deel of Harman and Jessie Deel of Brownhlem; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

Richard Todd Keene
(Honaker, VA)

  Richard "Richie" Todd Keene,  32, of Honaker, died Sunday, September 24, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Richlands, he was a son of Cecil and Linda Gail Street Keene of Honaker. A lifelong resident of Honaker, he was a 1992 graduate of Honaker High School and was of the Pentecostal faith.
  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Hassell and Hassie Street and his paternal grandparents, Howard and Jennie Keene.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by one son, Corey Chayce Keene, of Honaker; two brothers, Chris Keene and wife, Sandra of Abingdon and Sammy Keene and wife, Melissa of Bristol, VA; his fiancée, Candi Harris of Honaker; three step-daughters, Lakin Keen, Hali Wells, and Cortney Wells; one niece, three nephews, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Services will be held today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. in Honaker with the Revs. Arvil Arwood and Gerald Lester officiating. Interment followed in the Street Cemetery at Rowe.
  Pallbearers were Christopher Keene, Sammy Keene, Gary Keene, Kevin Robinette, Ricky Kennedy, Michael Lester, Brad Harris, Gary William Keene, and Eugene Keene.
  Honorary pallbearers were Jeff Hess, Harvey Hess, Carlos Keene, Marshall Keen, Jerry Reynolds, and Randall Helton.


Abigail D. Kanupp
(Conover, NC)

  Abigail Danielle Kanupp, infant daughter of Jeffrey and Clara Thomas Kanupp, of Conover, NC, formerly of Buchanan County, died Saturday, September 9, 2006.
  She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, J.C. Thomas, who had resided in Vansant.
  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Lois (Keene) Thomas Hughes of Conover, formerly of Vansant; paternal grandparents, the Rev. Paul and Linda Kanupp of Murrells Inlet, SC; paternal great-grandfather, Osborne E. Propst; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
  A graveside service was held Thursday, September 14 at Conover City Cemetery with the Rev. Paul Kanupp officiating.
  Memorials may be made to Brenner Children's Hospital Development Office, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157-1021 or to the Youth Ministry Fund, Holy Communion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 597, Dallas, NC 28034.
