Lady
Panthers
Return
Experience
and
Maturity
For
Second-Year
Volleyball
Coach
Rick
Goodman |
|
by
Lloyd
Combs
Sports
Reporter
Haysi
and
Honaker
were
the
only
teams
in
the
BDD
for
years
and
they
still
rule
Black
Diamond
District
volleyball.
It’s
taking
time
for
the
other
three
teams
in
the
district,
who
only
started
playing
volleyball
a
few
short
years
ago,
to
reach
their
level.
But
that
doesn’t
mean
those
teams,
including
Twin
Valley,
aren’t
giving
it
their
best
shot.
Rick
Goodman
enters
his
second
season
as
coach
of
the
Lady
Panthers
and
his
second
club
has
a
little
more
experience,
and
the
maturity
that
six
seniors
bring
to
the
table.
Seniors
Carrie
Mounts,
Katherine
White,
Courtney
Hagerman
and
Sarah
Honaker
return,
along
with
sophomore
returnee
Kristen
Surrett.
The
newcomers
include
two
first-year
seniors,
along
with
one
freshman
and
one
sophomore.
The
Lady
Panthers
have
improved,
Goodman
says,
but
his
club
has
to
take
one
thing
at
a
time
as
it
tries
to
move
up
the
BDD
ladder.
"We’re
looking
better,"
Goodman
says.
"I
don’t
believe
we
can
compete
with
Haysi
or
Honaker
yet,
but
we’ve
improved.
"For
one
thing,
we’re
serving
better
this
year.
But
we
still
need
to
learn
to
play
together,
and
we
need
to
learn
to
hit
or
attack
a
lot
better.
But
we’re
getting
there."
The
newcomers
include
freshman
Allison
Rife
and
sophomore
Mallorie
Matney.
The
first-year
seniors
are
Nikki
Honaker
and
Emily
Fletcher.
The
added
experience
and
maturity
level
of
this
club
can
only
help
the
development
of
the
younger
players.
"We
only
had
one
senior
last
year,"
Goodman
added.
"Having
six
seniors
helps
our
young
girls
in
the
long
run."

went
on to
rout
Rye
Cove,
41-6,
in
non-district
football
action
Friday
night
at
Clinchport.
Chad
Barton
was
the
first
of
five
Tigers
to
score
touchdowns
as
Haysi
took
the
lead
for
good
early
in
the
game
and
went
on to
score
two
Tds
in
each
of
the
first
three
quarters.
Fullback
Caleb
Powers
scored
twice,
while
quarterback
Lance

(2-0).
The
Tigers
built
a
27-6

Haysi
got
some
228
of
its
317
total
yards
on
the
ground.
"We
got
off
the
ball
pretty
good,"
Haysi
coach
James
Colley
said.
"We
executed
pretty
well.
I
think
that
our
guys
were
ready
to
play
when
we
got
there.
"We
came
off
the
ball
well
and
made
some
good
cuts
and
we
were
able
to
get a
few
yards
on
the
ground."
Barton
scored
on a
one-yard
TD
run
and
the
first
of
five
extra
point
kicks
by
Allen
Owens
gave
Haysi
a 7-0
lead.
Rye
Cove
(1-2)
got
within
7-6
on a
22-yard
touchdown
pass
from
Jarrid
Hensley
to
John
Franklin,
but
the
Tigers
shut
the
Eagles
down
the
rest
of
the
way.
Haysi
held
Rye
Cove
to 94
yards
of
total
offense
and
forced
three
turnovers.
Later
in
the
first
period,
Cody
Yates
hauled
in a
nine-yard
TD
pass
from
Compton.
Compton
had a
hand
in
both
second-quarter
scores,
tossing
a
34-yard
touchdown
pass
to
Nathan
Boyd
and
adding
a
29-yard
TD
run.
Powers
scored
on
touchdown
runs
of
two
and
13
yards,
respectively,
in
the
third
quarter.
Haysi
travels
to
Honaker
Friday
for
its
annual
BDD
showdown
contest
with
the
Russell
County
Tigers.
"It’s
a big
game
for
both
of
us,"
Colley
added.
"We’ve
got
to go
over
there
ready
to
play
again.
We
always
have
good
games.
I
don’t
think
this
year
will
be
any
exception."

White
Leads
Honaker
to 47-7
Win at
Twin
Springs |

|
|
R.J.
White scored on offense, defense
and special
teams as Honaker trounced Twin
Springs, 47-7, in
non-district football action
Friday night in
Nickelsville.
The Tigers
scored five unanswered touchdowns
in
building a 35-0 halftime lead and
went on to even its
record at 2-2.
Whited scored
all three of his touchdowns in the
Tigers’ 22-point second quarter.
He caught a 62-yard
TD pass from Justin Hall that gave
the Tigers a 20-0
advantage.
A senior,
Whited also returned an
interception 46
yards for another score and ran a
punt back 65 yards
for a touchdown just before
halftime.
Hall threw for
133 yards and two touchdowns,
including
a five-yard scoring strike to
Michael Tiller in the
first period. Honaker finished
with 335 yards of total
offense.
"We
executed better and we cut down on
the number of
mistakes we’d been making,"
Honaker coach Doug Hubbard
said. "But executing a whole
lot better, that was the
big key.
"More so
than anything, we wanted our
offense to
execute better and be more
productive, and we were."
Justin Newberry
started the scoring for Honaker
with a
three-yard TD run in the first
quarter. Clay Smith
added a one-yard touchdown run in
the second half. One
Honaker touchdown was not
reported.
Michael Salyer
threw one touchdown pass for the
Titans.
Honaker hosts
Haysi Friday in a key Black
Diamond
District contest.
