Lady Cobras Facing True Rebuilding Task in Volleyball With Two Returnees

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
This is a new program and an even newer team.
Council’s volleyball program is just three years old.
It’s only two returnees have less experience than that, just two years combined. The rest of the team is made up of freshmen.
It’s a true rebuilding job for the Lady Cobras, who must replace four seniors who were with the program at its inception three years ago.

Danny Rasnake
Lady Cobras'
volleyball coach

There’s not a single senior, or junior, to replace them. Only two players return, and both of them are sophomores. Stephanie Cornett and Allison Presley gained a lot of valuable experience last year as freshmen.
Last year all their teammates were seniors. This year all eight of them are freshmen.
“It’s definitely a rebuilding season, Council coach Danny Rasnake says.

“There are no seniors and no juniors. Stephanie and Allison are sophomores, but they played in every game last year. Usually one played in the front row and one in the back.
“They do have some experience. It’s just not often you
have to ask sophomores to be your leaders. The freshmen all played on JV, but it’s a lot different playing JV and playing varsity, especially when you’re playing teams with a lot of seniors.”
But there is plenty of potential here. Cornett and Presley are multi-sport athletes who will step into key roles as hitters and also see time in the back row. Freshman Kara Fuller will be the setter.
Among the other freshmen, Kesley Geary, Dakota Bostic and Katie Thomas will be hitters, while Kylee Austin Laken Hurley, Megan O’Quinn and Tara Coleman will play in the back row.

Ervinton Blanks Hurley, 56-0

Ervinton scored on all six possessions in the first half and crushed Hurley, 56-0, in an all-Rebel battle Thursday night at Rebel Field in Nora.
Larry Phillips broke off a 58-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game to stake Ervinton (1-1) to a 6-0 lead. Two Hurley fumbles and a nine-yard punt set up three more scores and Ervinton had a 30-0 lead by the 5:20 mark of the first period.
The hometown Rebels built a 44-0 lead behind a 334-yard, first-half rushing effort. Phillips scored three touchdowns, while Anthony Honaker scored twice for Ervinton, which finished with 438 yards of total offense, all on the ground.
Hurley’s top rusher and one of its leading tacklers, Nathan Justus, was sidelined with an ankle injury, but no one player could have helped the visiting Rebels in this one.
Ervinton was as dominant on defense as it was on offense, with too much speed outside the tackles and too much strength inside. The Rebels held Hurley to minus-eight yards rushing and zero first downs in the first half.
The clock ran almost continuously beginning in the second quarter. The third and fourth periods were shortened to ten minutes each.
"I know (Ervinton was) a better team, but we acted like we didn’t want to be there," Hurley coach Greg Tester said. "We weren’t tackling, we weren’t blocking, and we weren’t doing the little things we need to do.

Justin McCracken threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, while Caleb Jennings ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Blue Tornado.
Richlands (2-0) slowly built a 20-0 halftime lead and added 26 points in the third period.
The Blues defense held Honaker (0-2) to just 21 yards rushing and 70 yards of total offense.
Austin Fuller scored three touchdowns, while C.J. Arms caught five passes for 100 yards for Richlands. The Blues finished with 508 yards of total offense.
