1,500 Affected by Outage

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor

More than 1,500 Buchanan County residents were without electricity part of the day Monday after a pole failure in the Grundy-Big Rock sub-transmission line.
According to Appalachian Power Company Communications Manager John Shepelwich, the pole failure occurred around 6 a.m. on Monday, after a pole and lines were discovered downed on a cliff in the Big Rock-Grundy area.
Power was not fully restored until 11:49 p.m.
Shepelwich noted 603 customers were affected on one circuit and 908 were affected on a second circuit. Altogether, 1511 customers were impacted.
He noted some customers were rerouted during the outage which allowed some to have their electricity restored earlier than others.
"Most of our customers were back up by mid-day on Monday, but 100 or so were still without electricity until the lines were reconnected near midnight," Shepelwich said.
The cause of the pole failure was not immediately known, Shepwich said, adding it could be any one of several reasons ranging from a slide to the pole splitting.

Federal Subpoenas Issued

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor
A federal investigation involving a former employee of the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office is apparently underway, however, officials remained tight-lipped on the nature of the investigation or who is being investigated.
Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster confirmed that several employees in his office have been served with federal subpoenas to appear as witnesses before a federal Grand Jury, apparently related to an ongoing investigation.
Foster declined to elaborate further as to what the ongoing investigation might be, but did say it apparently involved a former employee of the Buchanan County Sheriff's office.
"The incident in question was turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney's Office for investigation," Foster said in a brief press release issued Monday.
Commonwealth Attorney Sheila Tolliver was out of town this week and was unavailable for comment.
"Due to the ongoing investigation, no names can be released nor can further comments be made at this time,"  Foster said in the news release he issued in relation to his decision on how to answer questions related to the subpoenas.
"I'm not trying to hide anything and my office is not hiding anything," Foster said. "I just want to let the Grand Jury process run its course."
    He did not elaborate further.
The subpoenas were apparently served on Tuesday, July 25. The number of employees receiving them was not known at press time.
The case now being looked at by the federal Grand Jury is apparently unrelated to an ongoing case set for trial in federal court at the end of the month involving a former deputy charged with obstruction of justice and perjury in relation to the investigation of the death of Tina Stiltner which occurred in the Buchanan County Jail, prior to when Foster took office as sheriff.
