All
five local high school football teams wrapped up
the second and final weekend of pre-season scrimmages
last week.
Grundy and Twin Valley took part in a three-team
jamboree Friday night at the Twin Valley Middle School
field.
Hurley played in a four-team jamboree in Williamson,
W.Va., while Honaker visited Clintwood and Haysi
played a benefit game Saturday at Pound.
Hurley played Burch (W.Va.) to an 8-8 tie, while
Clintwood edged Honaker, 21-20. Haysi apparently had
little trouble with Pound, defeating the Wildcats,
38-14.
At Twin Valley, Grundy won two two-quarter
scrimmages,
while the host Panthers split a pair.
In Friday’s opener, Grundy shut out PikeView
(W.Va.),
12-0. In the middle contest of three, Twin Valley
routed PikeView, 30-6. In the nightcap, Grundy topped
turnover-plagued Twin Valley, 18-0.
No detailed stats are available from any of the
contests.
Four of the five local squads open the regular season
Friday night, with two of them at home and two others
hitting the road. Each game is a non-district contest,
with two of them against out-of-state opponents.
Twin Valley hosts Tug Valley (W.Va.) in a battle of
Panthers, while Honaker hosts Russell County rival
Lebanon.
Hurley travels to Elizabethton, Tennessee, to face
Unaka High School. It’s the fourth year in a row the
Rebels have opened the season against the Rangers.
Grundy, meanwhile, visits Clintwood for the first
time
in over ten years. The Golden Wave will have an open
date next week. Haysi opens its season September 1
with Clintwood.

Now That 'The Season' Has
Arrived Here's One Man Predictions for 2006 High School Football
Season |

by Lloyd Combs
The Front Row
Every
time football season rolls around I think about
the old bluegrass song that goes...‘I’ve laid around and
played around this ol’ town too long; Summer’s almost
gone, now winter’s moving on...’
I don’t remember which version I heard
first, maybe
Jimmy Martin, maybe Lester and Earl. It doesn’t
matter. I think all the greats recorded it.
It’ll probably be 90 degrees in
October, anyway,
winter isn’t exactly moving on, but it sure seems to
get here all at once when it does make an appearance.
Don’t get me wrong, I love football.
I’m a Grundy
grad, a JMU alum but, for a variety of reasons, I’ve
pulled for Virginia Tech since the days when Don
Strock was calling signals.
I like the Tar Heels in all sports,
though years ago I
also became a Wisconsin fan. I even defended the honor
of the Badgers against a scurrilous f.i.b. (it’s a
long story, but it has to do with a Bears fan wearing
a Dick Butkus jersey and an establishment called Hogs
‘N Kisses in Lake Geneva).
I also love the Packers. Growing up, I
also pulled for
the Cleveland Browns, but don’t get me started on Art
Modell.
I don’t want to delay football, I just
want the summer
to linger. When school starts back its late Friday
night lights out for me every Friday, from late August
through late March. Every year about this time, I find
myself longing for one more summer road trip, just one
more free Friday.
I might squeeze in a one-day road trip
during the
baseball playoffs, but until then, I’m ready for some
football. Here are one man’s predictions for the 2006
high school season.
