Terry
Lee Matney, 60, of the Slate Creek section of Grundy, died
Thursday, August 17, 2006.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late
Richard Jr. and Magdalene Layne Matney.
He was a 1963 graduate of Grundy High School, a
charter member of the Slate Creek Fire Department and
presently served as fire chief. He was a chief maintenance
supervisor for Brooks Run Mining, a subsidiary of Alpha
Natural Resources. He was trained in heating and cooling and
had received several certificates from Southwest Virginia
Community College. He received his electrical training at
Washington County Electrical School. He had been a coal
miner for the past 30 years and was a member of Grundy
Church of Christ where he served as a Sunday School teacher
for the men's class.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by one sister, Penny Lynn Matney.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Viers Matney; one
son, Rages, and wife, Amanda Matney, of Grundy; four
sisters, Richalene and husband, Elmer Lester, of Kingsport,
TN, Barbara and husband, Sam Garrett, of Charlotte, NC and
Donna Fleming and Glenda and husband, Fred Matney, all of
Defiance, OH; one brother, Richard Matney III and wife,
Cathy, of Defiance, OH; one sister-in-law, Marsha Viers, of
Harman.
Services were held Sunday, August 20 at Grundy Church
of Christ with Evgs. Dennis Wimmer, Sam Casebolt and Mike
Trent officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest
Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were Jim Bunn, Dewey Looney, Steve
Hurley, Anthony Matney, Sam Hylton, Steve Hylton, Tom
Cooper, Terry Joe Garrett, Paul Yates, David Delaney, Ronald
Anderson, Eugene Whited and Jimmy Dotson.
Honorary pallbearers were F.D. Robertson, Dr. Clint
Sutherland, E.H. Lester, Bill Wright, Christy Plymal, Coty
Crigger, Carter S. Hylton, David Matney, members of the
Slate Creek Fire Department and the Grundy Church of Christ
Men's Sunday School class.

Charles Elmer Keen
(Grundy)
Charles Elmer Keen, 60, of Grundy, died
Thursday, August 17, 2006 in a Bristol, TN
hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late
Marion W. and Marinda Virgie Harman Keen, both Buchanan
County natives. He had spent his entire life in the Buchanan
County area and was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by two brothers, James W. Keen and Kermit Keen, Jr.
He is survived by two sisters, Bonnie Clemons and Ola
Gay Keen, both of Raven; one brother, Claudie Keen of
Tazewell.
Services were held Sunday, August 20 at Hurst-Scott
Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with the Revs. David Lowe
and Trula Harman officiating. Interment followed in the
Harman Family Cemetery in Marvin.
Pallbearers were family and friends.

Lillian
Griffith Walls, 84, of Rt. 5, Grundy, died Friday, August
18, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following an
extended illness.
Born in McDowell County, she was a daughter of the
late Jack and Lena Maynard Griffith. She attended the Church
of God and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her husband, Guy Wells; three daughters; two sons; one
sister; and two brothers.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Hagerman of
Avondale, WV, Mary Alice Walls of Indianpolis, IN and Arline
Walls of Oceana, WV; two sons, Arnold Walls of Avondale and
Franklin Walls of Pineville, WV; one brother, Lacy Griffith
of Yukon, WV; several grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, August 21 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent officiating.
Burial followed in the Noah Stewart Cemetery, Paynesville,
WV.
Active pallbearers were friends.

Christopher E.
Justice, 27, of Vansant, died Saturday, August 19, 2006.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Lucille
Deel Justice, of Vansant and the late James C. Justice. He
was a former employee of Wendy's Restaurant.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death
by one brother, Brian Keith Justice, June 12, 1985; paternal
grandfather, John F. Justice; and by his maternal
grandparents, Alfred Burton and Stacy Bell Deel.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three
sisters, Sandra Dee Boyd of Prater, Karen Yates of Honaker
and Julie Ann Rash of Big Rock; one brother, James G.
Justice, of Vansant; and paternal grandmother, Mexico
Justice of McClure.
Services were held Wednesday, August 23 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and the Rev.
Eddie Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley
Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were family and friends.

George
P. Lockhart, 76, of the Prater section of Vansant, died
Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at his home following a brief
illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Tom
and Bertha OQuinn Lockhart. He was a life-long resident of
Buchanan County, was an active member of Coleman United
Methodist Church, served in the United States Army during
the Korean Conflict where he was assigned to the BTRY
"A" 45th AAA GN BN Germany, receiving the
Occupational Medal (Germany). He was a retired employee of
Island Creek Coal Corporation VP #1 and a member of United
Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1509.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death
by three sisters, Edna Cundiff, Dolly Lester and Leah
Lockhart, and one brother, Roy Lockhart.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Owens Lockhart;
two sons, Bryan Keith and wife, Patricia Lockhart, of Pounding Mill and Jonathan Scott and wife,
Kathryn Lockhart of Christiansburg; one sister, Lorene and
husband, Tolly Charles, of Rt. 1, Vansant; two brothers,
Elmer and wife, Arbutious Lockhart and William Bill and
wife, Judy Lockhart, all of Rt. 1, Vansant; six
grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, August 19 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Darrell Thacker and J.N.
Howard officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory
Gardens, Claypool Hill. Full military rites were held at the
cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the
American Legion.
Active pallbearers were Sandy B. Tarlton, Rocky Dale,
Fred Deel, Billy Owens, Steve Lockhart and Tony Lockhart.
Honorary pallbearers were R.C. Sykes, Jim Lockhart,
Dr. J.P. Sutherland, Jr., Mark Lockhart and brothers of

Pauline
Edwards, 84, of Clintwood, died Thursday, August 17, 2006 at
Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Clintwood.
Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the
late Watson and Winnie Edwards. She was a retired homemaker
and member of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death
by her first husband, Milton Viers; her second husband,
Burns Edwards; one son, Elliott Milton Viers, Jr.; one
step-daughter, Ruby Owens; two grandsons, Allen Burns
McMillan and Shawn Michael McMillan; one step-grandson, P.J.
Fuller; one brother, Tracy Edwards; one son-in-law, Joe C.
Arrington; and one step-son-in-law, Jim Deel.
She is survived by one son, Dr. Jim (Ginny) Viers of
Blacksburg; four daughters, Janet (Frank) Edwards and Joyce
(Louie) Looney, both of Vansant, Jama Arrington of Haysi,
Pam (Roy) McMillan of Clintwood; one step-daughter, Mildred
Deel of Clinchco; one daughter-in-law, Kathy Viers, of
Vansant; one sister, Irene Counts of Birchleaf; 17
grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 24
great-grandchildren, 19 step-great-grandchildren, four
great-great-grandchildren, 11

Services were held Sunday, August 20 at Haysi Funeral
Home with Elder Garnell Gilbert officiating. Burial followed
in the Robinson Family Cemetery, Neely Ridge.

John Ryan Viers, Brent Viers and Gary Deel.

Ethel
Mae Sweeney Mullins, 72, of Grace Health Care in Abingdon,
formerly of the Compton Mountain section of Buchanan
County, died Saturday, August 19, 2006 at Johnston
Memorial Hospital in Abingdon following an extended
illness.
Born in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the
late Bill and Lula Bell Sweeney. She was of the
Pentecostal Holiness faith and was a member of Rosa Cole
Pentecostal Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by one grandson, Joel Ryan Owens; two sisters; one
brother; and by her pastor, Brother Joe Gross.
She is survived by six daughters, Betty Owens and
husband, Carl, and Orpha Kelly and husband, Bill, of
Pilgrim's Knob, Pat Joyce and husband, Steve, and Peggy
Joyce and husband, Johnny, of Claypool Hill, Nancy Nichols
and husband, Shannon, of Abingdon and Rhonda Alley and
husband, Kenneth, of Hillsville; two sons, Bobby Mullins
and wife, Debbie, of Thompson Valley and Elmer Mullins and
wife, Jennifer, of Jewell Ridge; four brothers, Bill,
Henry, Cleve and Benny Sweeney; four sisters, Bessie
McKinzie, Frances Lester, Katherine Johnson and Rosetta
Fain; and several grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, August 22 at Singleton
Funeral Service Chapel, Cedar Bluff, with the Revs. Luther
Rife and Lawrence Horn officiating. Burial followed in
Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
Pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

Ada
T. Hall, 93, of Honaker, died Monday, August 21, 2006 in a
Lebanon hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the
late William and Ida Thompson Thomas. She had resided in
Honaker since 1979, spending most of her life in Buchanan
County. She was a member of the Honaker Church of God. In
her generation, she was the last surviving member of her
immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Burt Hall; one step-son, C.B. Hall;
one brother, Brady Thomas; two sisters, Lacy Church and
Helen Prater; several half-brothers and half-sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Bailey and
husband, Earl, of Honaker and Helen Johnson and husband,
Clayton, of Rowe; one son, Hurshel Hall and wife, Carol,
of Manassas; several half-brothers and half-sisters; 13
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 11
great-great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Wednesday in Honaker with the Rev. Ancil
Childress and Pastor Larry Brooks officiating. Interment
followed in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
