41 Golfers Take Part in Annual YMCA Benefit Golf Tournament

Some 41 area golfers enjoyed a day of fellowship and golf competition while taking part in and competing for titles in five different flights during the 15th annual YMCA Benefit Golf Tournament held last Friday afternoon at Willowbrook Country Club, near the Breaks.
The format for play was a captain's choice, two-person teams, flighting each team by their average team handicap. Winners were determined in the four flights by the low gross score of those team in each flight.
The low score of the tournament was turned in by a father-son duo, competing in the R.A.C.E. sponsored flight (flight A).
The team of David Matney and son, Anthony, posted a blistering round of four-under-par, 66, for the 18-hole event, earning top honors in the flight and the day's lowest score.
The twosome of Bob Cole and his son, Taylor, captured runner-up honors in the flight when the pair finished with a one-under-par, 69.

Golf is Back at Twin Valley; Young Team Hopes to Hold its Own in BDD

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

After a one-year hiatus golf is back at Twin Valley, where a young team hopes to hold its own in the Black Diamond District.
The Panthers have a seven-man roster with three sophomores, two freshmen and two seniors.
"We’ve got seven boys and we may add a couple of young girl golfers to the team," first-year Twin Valley golf coach Robert Simpson said. "We have a very young team.
"Two of the kids will be seniors, but the majority of them are young and very interested in working hard. We’re looking forward to (the season)."
Seniors Josh Crigger and Matthew Baldwin and freshmen Lucas Shortridge and Brandon Viers will be joined by sophomores Hunter Simpson, Ethan Prater and Jacob St. Clair.
Two of the sophomores are among the most experienced golfers on the team, while the other soph is showing the sort of potential a fledgling program needs.
"One problem we have is we’re not able to go play in our backyard," Simpson said. "A lot of these kids don’t get a chance to play until they‘re old enough to drive. I’m hoping a lot of them as they get older will travel and play (more).
"Ethan Prater had never swung a club before until a month ago, but he’s already showing improvement. I’m amazed at his natural ability and talent. We’re looking to maybe next year (having) some of the kids joining a country club."

Twin Valley to Host 3-Team Football Jamboree, Friday

Twin Valley will host a three-team jamboree Friday night beginning at 6:00 p.m.
The three squads, Twin Valley, Grundy and PikeView (W.Va.) will play two-quarter scrimmages against one another.
In the opener, Grundy will square off against PikeView at 6:00. At around 7:00 or 7:15 p.m., Twin Valley will meet PikeView. The host Panthers will face Grundy around 8:00 p.m., or shortly thereafter, in the nightcap.
The event is the final tuneup for all three teams before the regular season.
