Add
one more prestigious honor to Ashley Stroehlein,
who is amazed at all of them, despite an impressive
list of accomplishments as a high school
student-athlete.
The 2006 valedictorian at Council High School,
Stroehlein was recently named the WJHL-TV Female
Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Her latest honor brought with it a $1,000
Embarq
Scholar-Athlete scholarship. Stroehlein was selected
as the top female student-athlete in the region for
the 2005-2006 school year by the staff of WJHL News
Channel 11 in Johnson City, Tenn.
A basketball, volleyball and softball
standout at
Council High School, Stroehlein was presented the
award at a banquet recently in Johnson City by company
representatives from Embarq.
According to a news release from WJHL,
Stroehlein was
one of over 50 students recognized during the year
from among hundreds of applicants across Northeast
Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
Over 50 high schools schools are included in
the WJHL
coverage area, and weekly male and female winners are
announced during the various high school sports
seasons. WJHL sports director Kenny Hawkins said at
the banquet that the station probably had enough
applicants submitted for the awards to do a scholar
athlete every day.
Despite earning a veritable plethora of
district,
regional and state honors during her time as
student-athlete at CHS, Ashley was genuinely surprised
when WJHL sportscaster Kasey Marler called to inform
her of her selection.

Grundy, Hurley and TV Open
Pre-Season With Action in Teco Coal Kickoff Classic in KY |

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
Greg
Tester made his coaching debut against another
former Buchanan County football standout as Hurley,
along with Grundy and Twin Valley, opened the
pre-season with an appearance in the Teco Coal Kickoff
Classic Saturday evening at East Ridge, Ky. High
School.
Each of the three county teams were matched up
against
three squads from eastern Kentucky and the three
Virginia squads got mixed results.
The exhibition games featured 20 plays for each
offense in a controlled scrimmage, followed by two
16-minute quarters with a clock that ran, for the most
part, continuously.
The two quarters used regular season rules from
the
line of scrimmage, but, with an exception or two, no
special teams action. It was the first scrimmage
action for the Virginia clubs and the second for the
Kentucky teams and it showed.
In the first contest, Jenkins outscored Twin
Valley,
24-12. In the second scrimmage Phelps shut out Hurley,
20-0, while the nightcap featured a 12-12 tie between
Grundy and host East Ridge.
Grundy and East Ridge went into a brief "overtime"
period with no clock to allow players from both
benches to get some playing time.
Twin Valley stayed with Jenkins well into its
contest,
cutting a 12-0 deficit to 12-6 during controlled
scrimmage play and trimming another 12-point deficit
to 18-12 in the final quarter. Jenkins gradually wore
down the Panthers, adding its final touchdown with an
eight-yard run with 3:02 remaining.
