Tommy Lester, 68, of Big Rock, died Saturday, August 5, 2006
in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN following
an extended illness.
Born in
Buchanan County, he was a son of the late George and
Elizabeth Hackney Lester. He was a life-long resident of
Buchanan County and a member of Sulphur Springs Primitive
Baptist Church for several years where he served as a
deacon. He was a disabled coal miner.
In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Tommy
Lester Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Cindy Lester; one
granddaughter, Brittany Renee Lester; two sisters, Ethel
Justus and Pinky Lester; and four brothers, Troy, Hassell,
James and Earl Lester.
He is
survived by his wife, Lillian Mae Thornsbury Lester; four
daughters, Teresa Ann and husband, John L. Dotson of Big
Rock, Barbara Kay and husband, Jimmy Griffey and Maudie
Elizabeth Lester, all of Mouthcard, KY and Connie Jean
Stiltner of Bristol, TN; three sons, Thomas and wife,
Elizabeth Lester, James Christopher and wife, Sarah Jane
Lester and Michael Wayne and wife, Shirley Lester, all of
Big Rock; three sisters, Edna and husband, Charles (Dicky)
Ling of Big Rock, and Matilda Quinley and Martha Charles,
both of Grundy; five brothers, George Lester, Jr. of Grundy,
Tolby and wife, Delores Lester, Jackson Lester and Robert
and wife, Emily Lester, all of Big Rock, and Ira and wife,
Shirley Lester of Steele, KY; 20 grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren.
Services will
be held today (Thursday), August 10 at 1 p.m. at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Vance Jones, Jimmy Lee
Smith, Jimmy Kerr, Brian Moore, Shawn Dotson and Jeff Dotson
officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial
Park, Big Rock.
Active
pallbearers will be family and friends.
Honorary
pallbearers will be Bill Laney, Steve Wagner, Gary Wagner,
Eddie Taylor and his doctors and nurses at Buchanan General
Hospital, Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital and Holston

Hattie
Mae Price, 67, of Welch, WV, formerly of Grundy, and
Bristol, TN, died Monday, July 31, 2006 at Welch Community
Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in
Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Pearl Carlton
Graybeal of Richlands and the late George McCoy. She was a
resident of Buchanan County for several years and was a
member of the Presbyterian Church. She had been employed as
a hostess, cashier and was a homemaker.
In addition
to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Robert Lee (Yogi) Price, July 31, 2000; and one infant
brother.
She is
survived by one daughter, Belinda Carr of Welch, WV; one
sister, Margaret C. (Judy) McCoy of South Park, PA; two
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mausoleum
services were held Wednesday, August 2 at Forest Hill
Mausoleum in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Abingdon, conducted
by Evg. Mike Rife. Entombment followed in Forest Hill
Mausoleum.

Ronald
Lee "Chisel" Thomas, 49, of the Flatrock section
of Honaker, died Saturday, August 5, 2006 in a Lebanon
hospital.
Born in Richlands, he was a son of the late Basil
and Trula Mae Clark Thomas. He had spent his early life in
Buchanan County, prior to moving to Honaker and attended
Living Waters Church of God in Baptist Valley. A disabled
coal miner, he was formerly employed at Beatrice Coal
Company and was a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by two sisters, Judy Carol Deel and Teresa Ann
Thomas; his maternal grandparents, the Rev. Jay and
Louisia Clark; his paternal grandparents, Dale Thomas and
Gracie Thomas Dye;his step-grandfather, B.E. Dye; several
aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his lifetime companion, Loretta
Breedlove; one son, Austin Lee Thomas of the home; three
brothers, Harold Dean Thomas and Dallas Wayne Thomas, both
of Flatrock and Ricky Jay Thomas and wife, Crystal, of
Honaker; one sister, Connie Dale Lloyd and husband,
Steven, of Cleveland, Va.; four nieces, six nephews, aunts
and uncles.
Services were held Tuesday in Honaker with Pastor
Jeremy Day and the Revs. Howard Riley and Waye Baldwin
officiating. Interment followed in the Clark Cemetery on
Big A Mountain.
Pallbearers were Larry Deel, Rocky Stilwell, Eddie
Shepard, Steve Lloyd, Stephen Breedlove, Eddie Matherly,
Jeremy Mullis and Doug Shepard.
Honorary

Elizabeth
Ann Buckland Hale, 64, of Honaker, died Saturday, August
5, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
Born in Russell County, she was a daughter of the
late Palmer J. "P.J." and Nasba Geneva Wheatley
Buckland. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a 1959
graduate of Honaker High School. She was formerly employed
at Tillers/Big M Discount Store for some 30 years and had
most recently worked at K-Mart for three years. She
attended Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in Honaker.
She is survived by her husband, Luther Winford
"L.W." Hale; three daughters, Brenda Jean Hale
and T.J. Baumgart, Nancy Leanora Keen and husband, Tim,
and Karen Ann Lowe and husband, Terry, all of Honaker; one
brother, David Buckland and wife, Charo, of Elkton, MD;
two grandchildren, one step-granddaughter, several
brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday at Honaker with the Revs.
Kenny Taylor, Steve Perkins and Clyde Rose officiating.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at Greenhills Memory
Gardens, Claypool Hill. Interment followed.
Pallbearers were nephews, Carey Pritt, Chris Pritt,
Brett Farmer, Blake Farmer, Josh Hale, Jimmy Hale, Timmy
Hale, Charles David Buckland and Tony Buckland.

Woodrow
Bowman, 55, of Bee, died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Nellie
Keen Bowman and the late Kermit Clyde Bowman. He was a
disabled coal miner and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death
by two children, Jeffery and Earl; one brother, Jessie
James Bowman; and one sister, Linda Gail Bowman.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his
wife, Christine Bowman; three sons, Woodrow Bowman, Jr.
and Matthew Bowman, both of the home, and Donnie (Kim)
Bowman of Birchleaf; one daughter, Angel Hemphill of Haysi;
three brothers, Lonzie (Gay) Bowman of Davenport, John
Henry (Priscilla) Bowman of Pikeville, KY and Otis Lee
Bowman of Richlands; two sisters, Elsie Charles of
Davenport and Goldie Bowman of Richlands; and five
grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, August 7 at Haysi
Funeral Home with the Revs. Roy Lee Wilson and Denver
Barton officiating. Burial followed in the Charles-Deel
Cemetery at Prater.

Elder Franklin
O'Quinn, 72, of Clintwood, died Saturday, August 5, 2006
at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an
extended illness.
Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of
the late Rufus and Lettie Blankenship O'Quinn. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea and was a
member of Tivis Chapel Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by five brothers, Clell O'Quinn, Elder James O'Quinn,
Daniel O'Quinn, Eugene O'Quinn and Jessie O'Quinn.
He is survived by his wife, Janice O'Quinn; one
daughter, Tina O'Quinn of Clintwood; three sons, Elder
David O'Quinn of Clintwood, Bobby O'Quinn of Bristol, TN
and Paul O'Quinn of Montoursville, PA; three
brothers, Lawrence O'Quinn of Birchleaf, Newton
O'Quinn of Abingdon and Elder Ted O'quinn of Wytheville;
four sisters, Plina Deel of Haysi, Charlotte Rose and Fern
Rose, both of Clintwood and Patty Baber of Crozet; four
granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Services were held Wednesday, August 9 at Tivis
Chapel Church on Tivis Ridge with Elders Larry Pucket,
Rick Mullins and Ralph Mullins officiating. Burial
followed in the F.L. Colley Cemetery on Tivis Ridge.
Pallbearers were the O'Quinn and Dales nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. David Miller and Dr.
Muljibhai Thakkar.

Josephine Horn Day, 73, of the Chicken Ridge section of
Jewell Valley, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at her home
following an extended illness.
Born in
Whitewood, she was the daughter of the late Thomas W. and
Brassie McKinney Horn, both Buchanan County natives. She
was a graduate of Whitewood High School's class of 1951
and was a former deli supervisor for the Acme Supermarket
at Doran. She was of the Presbyterian faith.
In addition
to her parents, she was preceded in death by three
sisters, Dorothy White, Mable Ratcliff, Georgia Brown, and
one grandson, Joshua Day.
She is
survived by her husband, Vincent Day; one daughter, Connie
Keene and husband, Gerald, of Pinnacle, NC; three sons,
Randy Day and wife, Susan, of Rural Hall, NC, Greg Day and
wife, Diane, of Millbrook, AL and Andrew Day and wife,
Susan, of Advance, NC; one sister, Watie Cantrell of
Richlands; one brother, Tommy Horn of Richlands; seven
grandchildren.
Services
were held Saturday, August 5 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel
in Richlands with the Rev. Bill Keene officiating.
Interment followed in the Day Family Cemetery on Chicken
Ridge near Jewell Ridge.

Layne Ferrell, 64, of Richlands, died Wednesday, August 2,
2006 at her home.
Born in
Buchanan County, she was the daughter of Flornie Baldwin
Ferrell of Tazewell and the late Boyd Ferrell. She was a
graduate of Bluefield State College and Radford Teacher's
College. She was a retired school teacher from the Russell
County School System and was a member of Gethsemane
Baptist Church.
In addition
to her father, she was preceded in death by a half
brother, Harvey Ferrell.
In addition
to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Eloise
Scott of Front Royal and husband, Johnny Scott of Vansant
and Sharon Ferrell Hurley and husband, Bob, of Looneys
Creek; one brother, Roger Ferrell and wife, Shirley, of
Claypool Hill; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews.

were held Friday, August 4 at Singleton Funeral Service
Chapel in Cedar Bluff with the Rev. James Denton
officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens,
Claypool Hill.

Wilson Lockard, 68, of Abingdon, died Wednesday, August 2,
2006 at his home.
Born in
Whitesburg, KY, he was a son of the late Kenus Earl
Lockard, Sr. and Cora Stewart Lockard. He had worked as a
chief electrician in the coal mining industry with Island
Creek Coal Company/Consol Energy and had retired after 25
years of service. He was a graduate of the Millersburg
Military Institute and was a veteran of the United States
Army.
In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister,
Elizabeth Lockard and a brother, Kenus Earl Lockard, Jr.
He is
survived by his wife, Wanda Roulett Lockard; two
daughters, Thana Rowe and husband, David of Grundy and
Elizabeth Stacy and husband, Robert, of Bristol, VA; one
brother, Charles Lockard and wife, Susie, of Abingdon; one
sister, Ersie Mitchell and husband, Willard, of Belfast;

Russell County, he was a son of the late Myrtle Kiser. He

He is
survived by his wife, Lear Kiser; five sons, Garry Ralph
Kiser and Jerald Wayne Kiser of the home, Larry Eugene
Kiser and Gregory Darrell Kiser, both of North Carolina,
and Ricky Allen Kiser of South Carolina; one daughter,
Sherry Ann Kiser of Salem; and one sister, Irene Smith of
Abingdon.

were held Tuesday, August 8 at Bee Pentecostal Church with
the Revs. Carson Powers and Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Graveside services were held Wednesday a the Kiser
Cemetery at Dante.

F. Mullins, 104, of Galloway, OH, died August 3, 2006 at
the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Harry,
whom she had lived with for the last eight years.
Born in
Dickenson County, she was the last descendant of Richard
and Rosa Belle Compton Fuller. She was the last charter
member of Splashdam Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition
to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Jim Mullins; her children, Violet Presley, June Colley,
Lois Mullins, Roy Mullins, Ronnie Mullins, Hal Thomas
Mullins and John Edmond Mullins; sisters, Dora Wallace,
Flora Mullins, Margie Mullins and Maxie Mullins; brothers,
Jim Fuller, Dewey Fuller and Fred Fuller; and one
granddaughter, Rhonda Swank.
She is
survived by four daughters, Lockie (Charles) Bowman, Sally
(Charles Damron) Willis and Earlene (Ira) Mullins, all of
Columbus, OH and Sharon (Harry) Mullins of Galloway; two
sons, James (Mary Lou) Mullins of Grove City, OH and Larry
(Zetta) Mullins of Abingdon; sisters-in-law, Helen Fields
of Haysi; daughter-in-law, Mavis Mullins of Columbus; 24
grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 38
great-great-grandchildren.

the Fuller Cemetery at Haysi.

(Yates) Hicks, 63, of Kendallville, IN, died Wednesday,
August 2, 2006 at her home following an illness.
Born in
Harman, she had lived in Kendallville since 1987, moving
there from Whitewood. She was a homemaker, was a previous
co-owner of Hicks Flowers & Gifts in Rome City, IN and
was a member of Little Flossie Old Regular Baptist Church.
She was the
daughter of the late James Walter and Canzaty (Deel)
Yates.
In addition
to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three
sisters, Sarah Yates, Irene Conaway Stiltner and Zella
Conaway Coleman; and three brothers, Ervin Yates, James
Walter Yates, Jr. and Gobel Yates.
She is
survived by two sisters, Emalene Looney of Maxie and Ethel
Hagerman of Angola, IN; one brother, Neubern Yates of
Haysi; two sons, Sean and wife, Tammy Hicks of Ligonier,
IN and Tim Hicks of Kendallville; and two grandchildren.
Services
were held Monday, August 7 at Little Flossie Old Regular
Baptist Church with Elders Harvey Tuttle, Delmus Hall,
Scott Hamilton and Morris Wicker officiating. Burial
followed in Orange Cemetery, Rome City.

Donald
D. Fletcher, of Manassas, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at
Prince William Hospital in Manassas.
Born in
Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Roby and Grace
Fletcher. He served aboard the Battleship USS Wisconsin as
a plank member during World War II and received five
battle stars and numerous citations. He retired from Fruit
Growers Express Company in 1985 after 38 years of service
to the railroad.
In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers,
Jessie and Edward, and one sister, Faye Kinsey.
He is
survived by his wife, Marie Fletcher; one daughter, Donna
McClellan of Farmville; twin sons, Leslie and Larry of
Nokesville; two sisters, Blanche Boyd and Emily Wood; four
brothers, Harless, Clair, Jack and Tom Fletcher;
daughters-in-law, Sharon and Rose; one granddaughter and
three grandsons.
Services
will be held today (Thursday), August 10 at 11 a.m. at
Pierce-Price Funeral Home in Manasses with Pastor Guy

Memory Gardens, Manasses.

Herman Blankenship, 66, of Warsaw, IN, died August 6, 2006
at Kosclusko Community Hospital in Warsaw.
Born in
McClure, he was the son of Lewis W. and Mary Bell
(Ratcliff) Blankenship. He moved to Kosclusko County in
1965. He was retired from Bomet where he served as a
machinist and had worked as a machinist at Arnolt Corp. in
Warsaw.
In addition
to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers
and two sisters.
He is
survived by his wife, Sylvia J. Blankenship of Silver
Lake, IN; two daughters, (Jack) Marsha (Blankenship)
Baldridge of Silver Lake and (Tim) Jodi Karlynne Metzger
of Warsaw; one son, Lewis Wesley (Jaylene) Blankenship of
Silver Lake; two sisters Alberta (Russel) Campbell of
Virginia and Eunice (Roger) Sloan of Warsaw; eight
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pamela
Sue Newberry Sparks, 34, of Richlands, died Sunday, August
6, 2006 at a Johnson City, TN hospital following a sudden
illness.
Born in
Point Pleasant, NJ, she was the daughter of Arlene
Cantrell Newberry of Road Ridge in Raven and the late
Harold William Newberry. She was a graduate of the
Richlands High School Class of 1990, was a graduate of the
SVCC nursing program and was a Registered Nurse. She
attended Reynolds Ridge Community Church.
In addition
to her father, she was preceded in death by her paternal
grandfather, Alvie Newberry and maternal grandparents,
George F. and Margie Horn Cantrell.
In addition
to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Gary R.
Sparks, Jr.; two daughters, Brittany Nicole Sparks and
Andrea Renee Sparks of the home; one son, Austene Ryan
Sparks of the home; two sisters, Karen Newberry of Road
Ridge and Donna Keen and husband, Les, of North Carolina;
and grandmother, Mae Newberry of Road Ridge.

Betty
Jane Childress Arrington, 75, of Augusta, GA, died
Saturday, July 29, 2006 at St. Joseph's hospital following
a brief illness.
Born in
Newark, NJ, she was a daughter of the late Andrew
Granville Childress of Leemaster and the late Kelsey
Tennessee Charles Childress of Zebulon, KY. She served
with the Buchanan County Girl Scouts where she received
the high honor of the Thanks badge for the hard work
behind the scenes and was very active in the Looney's
Chapel United Methodist Church at Leemaster. She spent the
last 14 years in Augusta, GA and was a member of Hillcrest
Baptist Church.
In addition
to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband,
Gerald Monroe Arrington.
She is
survived by one son, Terry Lynn Arrington; two daughters,
Sheri Diane Arrington Owens and husband, Cory, of Augusta,
GA and Dawn Leigh Arrington Crouse and husband, Michael,
of Knoxville, TN; four grandsons and two granddaughters.
