8th Relay for Life Exceeds Goal
$167,000 Raised... And Counting

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor

White luminary bags in honor of, or in memory of, family members and friends lined the walking track at Poplar Gap Park stretching as far as the eye could see Friday evening as the eighth annual Buchanan County Relay for Life got underway.
More than $167,000 was raised by the Buchanan County Chapter of the American Cancer Society through the event  which was attended by an estimated crowd of 1,500 and donations were still coming in at press time.
Relay Chairman Margaret Wakeland noted the funds raised exceeded the group's $155,000 goal by some $12,000 and she added monies received through the end of August will continue to be credited to the Buchanan relay event.
"It shocked me," Wakeland said of the amount raised. "We set a new record for our fund raising."
Wakeland said she was also pleased by the turnout of people at the park attending the event, noting the number of people participating and coming to the park to take part in the event was up.
"We were pleased to see that many people come out and come to stay," Wakeland said. She noted many stayed on until midnight in support of the teams and took part in the various activities offered.
This year's relay began with the  traditional survivors walk through the park. Walkers were led by Dr. Clint Sutherland, who played the bag pipes.

Paw Paw, Hurley Precincts Merged
Heated Exchange Heard at Meeting

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor
A public hearing on a proposal to merge the Hurley and Paw Paw voting precincts became heated Monday as allegations and insinuations of politics being played were made by some speakers and Knox Supervisor Pat Justus erupted into a string of curses.
South Grundy Chairman Roger Rife banged the gavel repeatedly in an attempt to call down the verbal fray which erupted between Justus and Speaker Terry Hall.
Hall, a Republican, lost his 2003 bid for the post Justus, a Democrat, now occupies.
In the end however, board members voted unanimously to consolidate the two precincts and to move the polling location for both the Hurley and Paw Paw precincts to the Hurley Park gazebo effective with the November election.
It was the second time the issue of consolidating the precincts had been the subject of a public hearing. Last month, the matter was discussed at length and ended with an agreement to continue the hearing to Monday to allow both sides more time to look at possible options for relocation.
The park gazebo location, suggested by a resident at last month’s hearing, was ultimately the location chosen.
Bobby May, a voter in the Paw Paw precinct, who is also a past Buchanan County Republican Party chairman and current GOP secretary, asked board members not to close the precinct location and instead to keep it open in order to give residents in that area time to find another location in the Paw Paw area for the location of a polling place.
That same request last month resulted in a decision to continue the public hearing to Monday.
