The
state runner-up boys basketball team and a
number of outstanding athletes were honored recently
at the Twin Valley
High School Athletic Banquet.
All five starters on the BDD and Region D champion
Panthers basketball
squad were recognized for various
achievements,
including Group A state Player of the
Year Jeremiah Lester.
The 6-foot-3 senior was also
recognized for being
district and region Player of the
Year.
Lester has been chosen to the West squad for the
VHSCA East-West
All-Star boys basketball game July 11
in Hampton.
Senior
Kent Goodman, who has been named to the West
squad as an alternate,
was presented the Coach’s Award
and was recognized for
making the All-BDD and
All-Region D First
Team.
Junior center Matthew Baldwin was named Mr.
Basketball and was
recog-nized for making the All-BDD
First Team.
Senior K.T. Vandyke was recognized as an All-BDD
First Team pick and
was named the Panthers’ Defensive
Player of the Year.
Senior
Logan Shortridge, who, along with Lester and
Goodman, will continue
his playing career at Bluefield
State College, was
presented the PAIL Award. Also
recognized was
freshman Hunter Simpson.
The BDD champion girls cross country squad was also
recognized. Junior
Samantha Vandyke, a state
qualifier, was named
Best Runner.
Vandyke,
Brittany Maxwell, Nikki Honaker and Josie
Honaker were all
honored for making the All-Black
Diamond District
squad. Senior Sarah Harman was also
recognized.
In Baseball, Jeremiah Lester and Hunter Simpson were
named Co-MVPs.
In
Softball, Kriste Gilbert was named MVP. Courtney
Hagerman was named
Best Defensive player and Sarah
Honaker was named Most
Improved.
In Varsity Football, junior Wyatt Justus was named
Offensive as well as
Defensive Player of the Year.
Other football awards included John Jackson
(Offensive Lineman of
the Year) and Jimmy Matney
(Defensive Player of
the Year). J.J. Matney received
the Hustle Award and
Matt King was recognized for
perfect
attendance.

YMCA Announces Annual Summer
Basketball Camp |

The
Buchanan County YMCA will host its annual Co-Ed
Summer Basketball Camp
July 11, 12 and 13 for boys and
girls -- rising third
graders through rising eighth
graders.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day,
with lunch and
swimming to follow.
The fee for the camp is $65 for YMCA members and $85
for non-members.
Deadline for registration is June 30.
The coach for this year’s camp will be Ricky
Goodman, assistant
boys varsity basketball coach at
Twin Valley High
School.
There will be numerous learning stations with a
coaching assistant at
each station.
A typical day at camp will include free shooting (9
a.m. - 9:10), devotion
and roll call (9:10),
stretching/conditioning
(9:15), station work (9:25),
water break (10:10),
station work (10:15), break/snack
(11:00), group work --
1-on-1, 3-on-3, free throws,
hot shot (11:15), full
court games (11:45), daily
awards (12:45) and
lunch and swimming (1 to 5 p.m.).
A free T-shirt, free concession and swim passes
(valued at $5.50) for
each day will be given to each
participant.
Awards for camper of the day, as well as station
awards and one free
throw award will be given daily.
A one-year YMCA student membership, valued at
$221.00, will be given
to the participant chosen as
“camper of the
week.”.

balance due on the first day of
camp.
