Naomi Elizabeth Clifton
(Clifton Fork)

  Naomi Elizabeth Clifton, 80, of Clifton Fork, died Sunday, July 2, 2006.
  Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Allie Osborne Burke. She had resided in the Clifton Fork area of Buchanan County and was a member of Living Word Outreach Church at Pilgrim Knob.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Clifton; one grandson, Johnny Mac Rogers; four brothers, Albert Burke, Lewis Burke, Lee Burke and Jessee Burke; and four sisters, Susie Terry, Gurtie Boyd, Eula Burke and Trula Burke.
  She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Sue Hylton and husband, Billy, of Raven, Darline Mabe and husband, Jim, of Bristol, VA and Linda Ann Ward and husband, Jerry, of Swords Creek; daughter-in-law, Linda Clifton, of Clifton Fork; five sons, David Clifton and wife, Donna, and Cloyd Clifton and wife, Trudy, both of Richlands, Andy Clifton and wife, Cathy, of Swords Creek, Rick Clifton and wife, Lorie, of Pounding Mill and Joe Clifton and fiance’, Jennifer Haas, of Charlottesville; one brother, Thurman Burke, of Raven; one sister, Madiline Thompson, and husband, Virgil, of Greencastle, IN; 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), July 6 at 2 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with Pastor James Ray and the Rev. Walter Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers will be grandsons.
  Buchanan Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.


Ella Mae Jackson
(Grundy)

  Ella Mae Jackson, 75, of Grundy, died at her home Monday, July 3, 2006.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late London and Margaret Whitt Jackson. She was a homemaker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, three sisters and five brothers.
  She is survived by one daughter, Mablene Wallace and husband, Michael, of Grundy; three sons, Audy Ray Jackson and wife, Donna Sue, of Prater, Roger L. Stiltner of Grundy and Jimmy Jackson of Gilbert, WV; one brother, Helmes Jackson of Phelps, KY; one granddaughter, one grandson, one step-granddaughter and one step-great-granddaughter.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), July 6 at 1 p.m. at the Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church at Harman with Elders Howard Daniels, Roger Coleman and Mark Justice officiating. Burial will follow in the Hibbitts Cemetery in Grundy.
  Active pallbearers will be family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie and Betty Compton and employees of Virginia Medical and Respiratory.

Zane Grey Rose
                      (Breaks)

  Zane Grey Rose, 67, of Breaks, died Saturday, July 1, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Clinard and Fannie Barton Rose. He was of the Baptist faith, a member of Masonic Lodge #385 of Garden City, MI, worked for General Motors for 16 years and was past owner and operator of Gateway Motel.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Mason Rose.
  He is survived by his wife, Sue Rose; two daughters, Susan Renee (Steig) Granrud of Fairfax and Theresa Lynn (Jerry) Stanley of Birchleaf; one son, Michael Steven (Lisa) Rose of Breaks; one sister, Anna Lee Viers of West Land, MI; two brothers, Hillard (Erma) Rose of Collins, OH and L.C. (Pat) Rose of Providence, KY; and four grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday, July 4 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Frank Viers and Jim Duty officiating. Burial followed in the Rebecca Willis Cemetery at Haysi.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Paul Wayne Justice
(Garland, NC)

  Paul "Jake" Wayne Justice, 62, of Garland, NC, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, July 2, 2006 in Richlands.
  The son of the late Hibbert and Ocie Thompson Justice, both Buchanan County natives, he was a coal miner and the owner and operator of Jake’s Repair Shop at Home Creek before retiring. He was of the Baptist faith and had lived most of his life in Buchanan County before moving to North Carolina several years ago.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenny and Kennis Justice, and two sisters, Lillian Looney and Betty Jean Walsh.
  He is survived by his wife, Joan Justice; one daughter, Robyn Paulabeth Justice and fiance’, Kevin Reeves, of Kernersville, NC; step-daughters, Donna Lee and Teresa Andrasko and husband, Ricky, all of Clinton, NC; one sister, Faye Hughes and husband, Lee, of Doran; one brother, Ron Keith Justus and wife, Julie, of Grundy; sister-in-law, Mrs. Kennis (Ruby) Justus of Grundy several nephews and nieces.
  A private funeral service was held Monday, July 3 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.


Brooksie Rash Matney
(Panama City, FL)

  Brooksie Rash Matney, 76, of Panama City, FL, formerly of Grundy, died Monday, June 26, 2006 in the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Panama City.
  Born in Glade Springs, she was the daughter of the late Emory Rash and Virgie Lewis Rash. She was of the Holiness faith and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Matney, February 28, 2002; one son, Ernest Matney, Jr.; three sisters and three brothers.
  She is survived by one son, Michael Matney, of Florida; four daughters, Tina French, Sherry Cole, Nancy Caldwell and Rhonda Lambert, all of Panama City and Patricia Roehrig of Springfield, TN; one brother, Larry Rash of Florida; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, June 30 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home in Grundy with Minister Danny Rhea officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Lois Marie Elam
(Rosston, TX)

  Lois Marie "Jody" Stacy Elam, died June 30, 2006.
  Born in Stacy, a small town in western Virginia, she graduated from Mountain State Memorial School of Nursing and enlisted in the United States Air Force, where she served honorably as an officer and Registered Nurse until her resignation in 1956. She was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, later reassigned to Bryan/College Station AFB to be with her husband. Following graduation, she returned to Wichita Falls and opened Elam Associates architectural firm, later moving to Dallas in 1970 where she resumed her nursing career. She was employed at Baylor Hospital and and as a private duty nurse until accepting a position with Blue Cross Insurance in the Dallas corporate office. Following retirement, she and her husband moved to Rosston, TX to begin a farming and ranching operation.
  In addition to her parents, John Harvey and Victoria Rowe Stacy, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene M. Elam; one sister, Belva Rorrer; and one brother, Jeff Stacy.
  She is survived by one son, Eugene Mack Elam and wife, Criss Crossen; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth A. Elam.
  Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at Cross N Ranch, Era, TX.

Ted Martin
(Drill, VA)

  Ted Martin, 75, of the Martin Mountain section of Drill, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Drill, he was a son of the late Arch and Nancy Harris Martin. He spent his early life in the area prior to moving to Cleveland, OH where he worked as an engineer for River Terminal Railroad for 36 years, moving back to Martin Mountain in 1991. He was a member of Outreach Temple Church in Wysor Valley. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Crouse and Nellie Martin; and three brothers, Lee Martin, Clarence Martin and Edward Martin.
  He is survived by his wife, Helen Arwood Martin; two daughters, Patty Price of Rowe and Judy Deskins of Lebanon; three sons, Joe Martin of Honaker and Billy Martin and Teddy Martin, both of Rowe; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Revs. Arvil Arwood, Ancil Childress and Peerman Lester officiation. Interment followed in the Martin Cemetery on Stinson Ridge.
  Pallbearers were David Deskins, Patrick Martin, Sam Hess, Mike Martin, Ricky Brown and Pastor Jimmy Helton.


Nathan Allen Edwards
(Clinchco, VA)

  Nathan Allen Edwards, 29, of Clinchco, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at Dickenson Community Hospital in Clintwood.
  Born in Tazewell County, he was a 1995 graduate of Haysi High School and was last employed as a construction worker.
  He was preceded in death by one half-brother, Ronald Fuller; and grandfathers, Whetsel Edwards and Curtis Ramey.
  He is survived by his mother, Oleda Jo Keith of Tarpon; father and step-mother, Roger and Sandy Edwards of Clinchco; maternal grandmother, Tessie Ramey of Clintwood; paternal grandmother, Eva Edwards of Haysi; one sister, Pam (Alfread) Yates of Haysi; one half-brother, Donald (Della) Fuller of Prater; three step-brothers. Ernie (Tanya) Boggs of Haysi, Jerry Boggs of Keykoe and Randy (Kim) Boggs of Clintwood; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
  Services were held Saturday, July 1 at Haysi Funeral Home with Nathaniel Maggard and Ernie Addington officiating. Burial followed in the Edwards Cemetery in Clinchco.
  Pallbearers were John Edwards, Keith Edwards, Jr., Randy and Ernie Boggs and Jerry and Carl Lee Coleman.
  Honorary pallbearers were Alfread Yates, Donald Fuller, Jerry Boggs, Dustin Davis and Jerry Austin.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Helen M. Hahn
(Devon, WV)

  Helen M. Hahn, 81, of Devon, WV, formerly of Buchanan County, died June 6, 2006 at Highgate at Paoli Pointe.
  Born in Logan, WV, she was the daughter of the late George O. and Marjorie May Combs McGuire. She was a member of Wayne United Methodist Church and was a 1945 graduate of Longwood University with a B.A. in Education. In 1946, she attended a summer semester at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She taught in Virginia, Florida, Alabama and was also certified in Pennsylvania. She was a member of D.A.R., Modern Club of Philadelphia, auxiliary of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks, Friends of Wistar, Old Pine Church, Southern Heritage Club, Waynesborough Country Club and sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma.
  In addition to her husband, William Hahn, she is survived by four children, Patricia McConnell, M.D., William Jr., George and Susan Wilhelm; two sisters, Marjorie Booker and Harriette Doordan; and nine grandchildren.
  Services were held Thursday, June 15 at Wayne United Methodist Church. A private interment followed in Plainfield Cemetery.
