When
he left high school, Rob Colley figured he was
through with organized sports.
After all, the multi-talented athlete turned
down
offers to play basketball and football at several
smaller schools to concentrate on academic pursuits at
Virginia Tech.
When he left college, the son of longtime Haysi
High
School football coach James Colley had reconsidered
and figured he would return to his alma mater as both
a teacher and coach.
Then came a conversation between his father and
Emory
& Henry College football coach Don Montgomery, and now
the younger Colley’s career may be headed in an
entirely different direction.
Colley has been hired as a graduate assistant
football
coach at Emory, where he will work on a Master’s
Degree in American History Education and coach running
backs under Montgomery.
"I knew coach Montgomery was looking for
someone,"
Colley explained. "Dad mentioned it to him that I was
looking (for a coaching job) and that kind of got the
ball rolling.
"The plan was to start out teaching and
coaching and
maybe go back (home), but this was too good an
opportunity to pass up."
Colley had no plans to pursue such an
opportunity when
he started taking classes in Blacksburg in 2002. That
changed, especially after he helped his dad out as a
Haysi assistant exactly one year ago.
