FORMER HAYSI standout athlete Robby Colley will get a chance to pursue a lifelong dream now that he is joining the football coaching staff at Emory & Henry College. Colley plans to work on a Master's Degree in American History Education and coach running backs under E&H football coach Don Montgomery.
Colley Hired as Graduate Assistant Football Coach at Emory & Henry

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

When he left high school, Rob Colley figured he was through with organized sports.
After all, the multi-talented athlete turned down offers to play basketball and football at several smaller schools to concentrate on academic pursuits at Virginia Tech.
When he left college, the son of longtime Haysi High School football coach James Colley had reconsidered and figured he would return to his alma mater as both a teacher and coach.
Then came a conversation between his father and Emory & Henry College football coach Don Montgomery, and now the younger Colley’s career may be headed in an entirely different direction.
Colley has been hired as a graduate assistant football coach at Emory, where he will work on a Master’s Degree in American History Education and coach running backs under Montgomery.
"I knew coach Montgomery was looking for someone," Colley explained. "Dad mentioned it to him that I was looking (for a coaching job) and that kind of got the ball rolling.
"The plan was to start out teaching and coaching and maybe go back (home), but this was too good an opportunity to pass up."
Colley had no plans to pursue such an opportunity when he started taking classes in Blacksburg in 2002. That changed, especially after he helped his dad out as a Haysi assistant exactly one year ago.

15th Annual YMCA Benefit Golf Tourney Set August 11

The 15th Annual YMCA Benefit Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday August 11, and will be hosted by Willowbrook Country Club, near the Breaks.
Anyone wishing to participate in a day of fun, fellowship and golfing competition are urged to enter the event, which will feature several outstanding prizes for this year’s field of competitors.
The format for play will be a two-player Captain’s Choice, flighted by average team handicaps. Registration will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start to begin play at 10:30 a.m.
Upon completion of play, a dinner and awards ceremony will take place with trophies being awarded to the top three finishers in each of four flights and prizes presented to special award winners as well.
The first entry is a flight sponsorship for $1,000 – this entitles two players to compete, plus their company name prominently displayed on the scoreboard. There is expected to be four flights.
The second is a hole sponsorship for $500 – this entitles the sponsor to a sign which will bear their company name displayed on a randomly selected hole, plus sponsorship of two persons (one team) in the tournament.
The third is a non-participating sponsorship for $300 – this entitles two players (one team) to participate in the tournament.
The final sponsorship is an individual sponsor for $150 – this will allow one person to participate in the tournament. Individual participants will be paired with other individuals to form teams on a random basis. Should two individual sponsors want to play together, please note this when entering the tournament.
Also, any businesses or individuals who are unable to play, may still contribute a donation or sponsorship fee for the event.
All the proceeds from the tournament will be used for the continuation and promotion of the YMCA Mission to Buchanan County. Contributors will be recognized whether or not they participate in the tournament.
Entry forms are available at the YMCA or anyone needing further information about the event, should call the YMCA at 935-8871.
