Boyd Keen
(Slate Creek)

   Boyd Keen, 61, of the Slate Creek section of Buchanan County, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
   Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Giles and Martha Williamson Keen. A lifelong resident of Buchanan County, he was a member of the Stacy Church of God and was a disabled coal miner.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucinda Matney and Hannah Justus, and two brothers, Almarine (Jack) Keen and Sammie Keen.
   He is survived by his wife, Nora Charles Keen; four daughters, Teresa and husband Darl Hubbard of Honaker, Lois and husband Randy Woods and Connie and husband David Hicks, all of Grundy and Susanna and husband Macky Matney of North Tazewell; two sisters, Avolene and husband Toney Charles and Carolyn and husband Ray Matney, all of Grundy; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
   Services were held Monday, July 24 at Grundy Funeral Home with Evg. Michael Trent and Ministers William Daugherty, Ronald Lester and Mike Ashby officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
   Active pallbearers were Jerry Lester, Billy Payne, Ray Matney, Tim Hubbard, Travis Hubbard, Estil Crouse and sons-in-law.
   Honorary pallbearers were Josh Woods, Tanner Hubbard, Dwight Bishop, Dwayne Bishop, Roger Daugherty, Clyde Justus, Tony Charles, Burl Justus, Ira Matney, the staff of Clinch Valley Oncology Department and the staff of Clinch Valley Radiation  Department.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Steve Justus
(Home Creek)

   Steve Justus, 72, of the Home Creek section of Buchanan County, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
   Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Nellie Justice Justus of Rt. 1, Grundy and the late Wallace Justus. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of Blackey Church of Christ. He was a retired Preparation Plant Foreman for Southwestern Coal Corporation for 31 years.
   He is survived by his wife, Mary Evelyn Fletcher Potter Justus; two daughters, Stephanie Hodges of Galax and Lisa and husband, Donald Lamb of Austinville; one step-son, Bradley and wife, Diane Potter of Majestic, KY; four sisters, Patsy and husband, Ervin Stacy and Lou Ellen Justus, all of Grundy, Mary and husband, Clide Matney of Augusta, GA and Sue and husband, Junior Blankenship of Abingdon; three brothers, Roger and wife, Phyllis Justus of Stacy, Joe and wife, Betty Justus and Dickie and wife, Helen Justus, all of Rt. 1, Grundy; five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Wednesday, July 26 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Rick Stiltner, Michael Trent and Mike Rife officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland, Dr. Charles Hess, Dr. M.V. Pillai, Dr. Woods, Dr. Elvira Loria, Dr. Burt and employees of Total Home Care and Hospice.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

        
Lemon Mounts
(Hurley)

   Lemon Mounts, 74, of Hurley, died Friday, July 21, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
   Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Bud Alex and Sarah Ettie Rife Mounts. He was a retired coal miner and member of Pine Grove Old Regular Baptist Church.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert, Leonard and Julis Mounts; two sisters, Zella Justice and Tilda Mounts; and one granddaughter, Jessica Ann Sullivan.
   He is survived by his wife, Mallie Justus Mounts; one daughter, Mrs. Jimmy (Loretta) Walker of Hurley; two sons, Bruce Mounts and wife, Donna and Randy Mounts and wife, Joann, all of Hurley; two sisters, Stella Mounts Blankenship and Winnie Mounts Justus, both of Hurley; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
   Services were held Monday, July 24 at Pine Grove Old Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with Elders Julius Lester, Jr., Delbert Justus, George Baker, Josh Justus, Jr., Curtis Crouse, Roscoe Crouse and Larry Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the Chapman Justus Cemetery at Hurley.
   Pallbearers were Homer "Bo" Justus, Arthur "Weader" Justus, Tarzan Justus, Curtis Lester, Edward Mullins, Eric Sullivan, Stevie Mounts, Jeremy Mounts, Billy Joe Hunt, Burt Lester, Brandon Matthew Hunt, Tony Matney, Michael Justus, Addison McCoy and A.L. Blankenship, Jr.
   Virginia Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Woody Homer Slone
(Mouthcard, KY)

  Woody Homer Slone, 66, of the State Line area of Mouthcard, KY, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY, following a motorcycle accident.
Born in Pikeville, KY, he was a son of the late William L. and Callie Ramey Slone. He was a lifelong resident of the Mouthcard area and a member of Biggs Church of God. He was a retired ordained Church of God minister, having served as an assistant minister of the Biggs Church of God and State Line Pentecostal Church of God. He was a former member of the Pike County React Team.
   He is survived by his wife, Dora E. Brown Slone; one son, William Johnny and wife Jamie Slone of Mouthcard; one sister, Sylvia Janet and husband, Bruce Irick of Biggs, KY; one grandson, Jeremy Wakeland of Pikeville, KY; one granddaughter, Jonna Kristina Slone of Mouthcard; three great-grandchildren and one nephew.
   Services were held Saturday, July 22 at State Line Pentecostal Church of God with the Revs. James Chapman, Jessie Taylor and Doug Elkins officiating. Burial followed in the Big Hackney Creek Cemetery at Big Hackney's Creek, KY.
   Active pallbearers were Bob Freeman, Plenna Ramey, Tommy Slone, Leon Ramey, Donnie Ramey and Ronnie Hunt.
   Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Fields, Buford Roscoe Rife, Roger Plymal, James Justice, Robert Ramey, the Hon. Howard Keith Hall, Sen. Ray Jones, the Honorable Ira Branham, Mark Harrison, Guy Miller, Lloyd Fields and T.C. Mullins, Jr.

Eula Gay Gamble
(Lebanon, VA)

   Eula Gay Gamble, 77, of Lebanon, died Thursday, July 20, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
   Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Gladys Rasnake Wilson. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Baptist faith. She had formerly been employed at Russell Manufacturing as a seamstress.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Gamble; three sons, Mark Gamble, Jack Gamble and John Clinton Gamble; several brothers and sisters.
   She is survived one daughter, Gail Sykes of Bristol, VA; five sons, Clyde Gamble of Glade Springs, Wayne Gamble of Speedwell, TN, Mack Gamble of Abingdon, Foster Gamble of the home and Rush Gamble of Lebanon; three brothers, the Rev. Giles Wilson of Council, Garfene Wilson and Clyde Wilson, both of Dayton, OH; three sisters, Brenda Haris of Honaker, Mary Love of Dayton, OH and Wilma Rash of Lenoir, NC; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
   Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
   Pallbearers were grandsons.


John R. Lark
(Apopka, FL)

   John R. (Jack) Lark, 75, of Apopka, FL, formerly of Grundy, died Monday, July 18, 2006 following an extended illness.
   Born in Williamson, WV, he was a son of the late Robert and Flora Yates Lark. He was a resident of Grundy several years prior to moving to Florida and was of the Baptist faith. He was a former employee of Dent K. Burk Associates as an accountant and a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Billie Joe McFall Lark; his second wife, Lois Ann Ratliff Lark; one sister, Dorothy Lark Horn; and two brothers, Lawrence Lark and Virgil Lark.
   He is survived by one son, Gary Allen Lark of Apopka; two sisters, Shirley Hackney of Springfield and Ruth Briggs of Littleton, CO; several nieces and nephews.
   Graveside services were held Saturday, July 22 at Mountain Valley Memorial Park Chapel. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
   Active pallbearers were family and friends.
   Honorary pallbearers were Richard Chapman, Rusty Lark, Bobby Coleman, Billy Coleman and Pat Lark.
   Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Deborah Jean Hicks
(Caretta, WV)

   Deborah Jean Gibson Hicks, 47, of Caretta, WV, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at her home.
   Born in Hurley, she was the daughter of Dollie Lawson Gibson of Warm Springs and the late Isiah (Ike) Gibson. She was employed as a cook for the Commission On Aging in Bradshaw, WV.
   In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Lee Gibson and grandparents, James Lewis Gibson and Gladys Blankenship Gibson and George Lawson and Cellia Cathryn Byrd Lawson.
  In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Gary Ray Hicks of Berwind, WV; one son, Jacob Hicks and wife, Diane, of Bishop; one daughter, Tammy Hicks of Atwell, WV; four brothers, Steve Baker and wife, Darlene and David Lawson, all of Hurley, Isiah Gibson Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Warm Springs and  Donald Gibson of McDowell; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Cathryn) Smith and Sandra Salmons, both of Hurley.
   Wednesday evening services were held at North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church, Wolford, with Elders James Stacy, Curtis Crouse, Roscoe Crouse and Dave Gibson officiating. Thursday services were held at Berwind Pentecostal Christian Center with Randy Campbell, Hazel Click and Jack Puckett officiating.
   Graveside sevices were held Friday, July 21 at the Eli Blankenship Cemetery at Main Knox with Elder James Stacy officiating.
   Pallbearers were family and friends.

Russell McClanahan
(Dover, NJ)

   Russell B. McClanahan 66, of Dover, NJ,  died Saturday, July 1, 2006 in Saint Clare's Hospital in Dover following a brief illness.
   Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late C.W. (Dot) and Flora Rowe McClanahan, He worked for 35 years as a machinist with John Dusenbury in Randolph, retiring from that job in 2005. For the past 26 years, he lived in Dover. He was a member of Moose Lodge #541 in Dover.
   He is survived by his wife, Grethel; four daughters, Hazel Nichols of West Milford, Shirley McClanahan of Hopatcong, Elizabeth Bachmeier of Tacoma, WA and Pamela Van Zant of Lincoln Park; six brothers, Kermit McClanahan and Bransome McClanahan, both of Grundy, Frank McClanahan of Slate Creek, Chester McClanahan of New Baltimore, MI, Lea McClanahan of North East, MD and Paul McClanahan of Johnson City, TN; four sisters, Trula Lester of Paynesville, WV, Hazel Barnett and Neta Clevinger, both of Elkton, MD, Thelma White of Meadowview; 11 grandchildren and 11 siblings.
   Services were held Wednesday, July 6 at Tuttle Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 29 at the Stacy Church of God at 1 p.m. with Mike Ashby and friends officiating.
