LAST WEEK'S round-up was conducted in broad daylight as defendants named in sealed indictments were picked up and brought to the local jail for processing before being arraigned in circuit court, or transferred to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority to await bond hearings.

Drug Sweep
18 Charged in Big County Roundup

Eighteen defendants were picked up on 47 separate charges in the past week as local law enforcement officials conducted a drug sweep in the county.
Sheriff Ray Foster said last Thursday that the joint effort between the Buchanan County Sheriff's Department, the Virginia State Police and the 29th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force had been a success.
"We got what we went after," Foster said.
Unlike past drug raids conducted recently which were carried off in the wee early hours of the morning, last week's round-up was conducted in broad daylight as defendants named in sealed indictments were picked up and brought to the local jail for processing before being arraigned in circuit court, or transferred to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority to await bond hearings.
"We wanted to do something a little different and by doing it in the daylight hours,  the community can see and knows we're at work," Foster said.

School Board Suspends TVHS Coordinator
Suspension Without Pay to Remain in Effect Pending Outcome of Charges

by Cathy St. Clair
News Editor
Buchanan County School Board members suspended Twin Valley High School Student Coordinator Terry Maxwell without pay last Thursday, pending the outcome of charges against him in Buchanan Circuit Court.
Maxwell also served as a cross country coach, a driver education teacher and school bus driver, in addition to his duties as the TVHS student coordinator. He had also been recently named the TVHS athletic director and assistant baseball coach. He was the former Girls Varsity Basketball Coach.
Maxwell was indicted earlier this month on six counts of indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship.
The allegations, according to Special Prosecutor Dennis Lee, were leveled by four former female students.  The alleged incidents on which the charges are based stem back to the 1990s. All four of the alleged victims were under the age of 18 at the time the alleged incidents occurred.
Maxwell remains free on bond pending a November 8-9, 2006 trial.
The school board action to suspend Maxwell last week followed a 35-minute closed door session called by Rocklick School Board Member Rhonda McClanahan. Knox School Board Member Clarence Brown seconded the motion. The topics identified for discussion were personnel and legal advice.
