HAYSI SENIOR Whitney Compton, right, pictured here in a Region D girls basketball contest this past season, was selected to play in this week's VHSCA All-Star girls basketball game in Hampton. Twin Valley's Coach Moore, Haysi's Compton Chosen for VHSCA All-Star Basketball Games

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

For Twin Valley’s Brian Moore, Tuesday was to be his first appearance as an All-Star coach.
For Hays’ s Whitney Compton it will probably be her last organized basketball game as a player.
Both Moore and Compton are taking part in this week’s Virginia High School Coaches Association all-star games. Moore is on the West coaching staff in the boys All-Star basketball contest, while Compton is on the West roster for the girls’ All-Star basketball game.
Each game was played Tuesday night at Hampton Coliseum. Results will appear in next week’s edition of the Virginia Mountaineer.
Moore earned a spot on the West staff after guiding Twin Valley to the Group A state finals in March in his third season as head coach of the Panthers.
"It’s an honor and a privilege for any coach to get to work with that caliber of athlete," Moore said. "To be able to participate in an all-star game itself is usually a once in a lifetime opportunity."
For Moore, the chance to coach one of his players makes the long drive to the Tidewater area of Virginia worthwhile. Group A Player of the Year Jeremiah Lester of Twin Valley is on the West roster.
"To have an opportunity to see one of your players play on that stage is very rewarding," Moore added.
"As a coach, to see Jeremiah play one more game and be a part of that, just working with him has been a great joy.
"I’m looking forward to it. It’s really the main reason I’m willing to go that far for one game."
For Compton, Tuesday is one and done as far as basketball is concerned. The 6-foot-1 former Haysi star had several chances to play college basketball, but her best opportunity to compete at the Division I level came in softball. She recently signed a letter-of-intent with East Tennessee State.

DGIF Approves $5 Increase in Fees for Hunting, Fishing and Trapping

by Bill Anderson
Southwest Virginia Outdoors

At their June meeting, the Board of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) approved a five dollar increase in fees for hunting, fishing and trapping licenses that will go into effect July 1, 2006. Special youth licenses, however, will not see an increase. In addition, special one-day fee fishing permits will not increase until  January 1, 2007, and will only go from $3.50 to $5.50.
In addition, effective July 1, 2006, the fee paid to license agents for the sale of each license will increase from fifty cents to one dollar.
The last license fee increase was in 1988.
Besides the differences previously mentioned concerning altered regulations in some Southwest Virginia deer seasons, the fall turkey season will also see a change. For several years the season opened the last Monday in October, beginning this fall it will start on Saturday prior to the last Monday. This will make only one hunting day different in opening of season, however it will give a lot of people an opportunity to hunt the first day who would not have before.
Conversely, with fewer turkeys in the woods, will allowing so many hunters afield on the first day of fall season be wise when turkey populations need increasing? I'm not an expert on turkeys, but a biologist once told me that the reason to open season on Mondays instead of Saturdays would lessen the shock on wildlife populations right at the beginning of season.
It shall now be legal to hunt squirrels in certain wildlife management areas from June 2 - June 27 beginning in 2007.
