District 11 Champs... Headed to State!
Buchanan East Girls Capture County's First Softball Title

Dedication and a little pitching helped one softball team go from no wins at the local level to a legitimate shot at the ultimate win.
Buchanan East has already won some big games, winning four times last week to claim the District 11, 9-10 year old softball championship. The title earned the squad a trip to the state tournament this weekend in Norfolk.
Eleven players who didn’t win a game as eight-year olds won four straight games when it mattered most last week.
In the opener they defeated Clinch Valley, 10-0, in a game called after four innings. In the first of two meetings with Honaker, Buchanan East won, 8-1.
In the final two contests, the Buchanan County squad edged Richlands, 10-7, and, in the finals, defeated Honaker again, this time by a 5-3 count.
“When we started they were a bunch of eight-year olds,” says Jimmy “Sugar Bear” Childress, a longtime youth coach in the county who coaches Buchanan East along with Russell Kelly. “I gave up (another) team to help coach them and the first two years we didn’t win a game.

Honaker and Haysi Place Three Players On All-Group A State Baseball Squad

Two Honaker Tigers and Justin Kiser of the Haysi Tigers were among the selections on the 2007 VHSCA All-Group A baseball team.
Honaker’s Justin Newberry made the Second Team as a catcher. A senior, Newberry was a four-year standout for coach Tom Harding’s BDD champions. He hit .384 and capped his career with three post-season home runs as Honaker advanced to the Region D semifinals.
Justin Kiser, a senior, was an honorable All-State mention pick along with junior Adam Honaker of Honaker.
Several other southwest Virginia players were chosen in voting by district representatives of the Virginia High School Coaches Association. J.J. Kelly’s Cody Bentley, Castlewood’s Andrew Kennedy and St. Paul’s Brandon Phillips made the All-Group A First Team.
Brian Jordan of Goochland was named Player of the Year. Jeff Smoot, who guided Strasburg to the Group A title, was voted Coach of the Year by his peers.
