Michael Barry Trent
(Grundy)

  Michael Barry Trent, 63, of Grundy, died Friday, July 6, 2007 at his home following a brief illness.
  Born in St. Paul, he was the son of the late Oakley and Dorothy Trent. He was an ordained minister of 42 years at Little Prater Church of Christ and was the Buchanan County Hall of Fame Recipient in 2006.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Trent, and one sister, Pauline Keene.
  He is survived by his wife, Lola Gay Trent; two sons, Anthony Paul Trent and wife, Kim, of Wilkesboro, NC and Michael Stephen Trent and wife, Paula, of Augusta, GA; one daughter, Mrs. Scott (Kelli Grace) Griffith, of Beaver, WV; four sisters, Shirley Stanley of Winston-Salem, NC, Lorraine Wright and Marie Spangler, both of Abingdon and Belva Collett of Apache Junction, AZ; mother-in-law, Sarah Hibbitts; and grandchildren, Heather Griffith, Connor Trent, Ashley Trent, Sarah Trent, Lauren Trent and Carter Trent.
  Services were held Monday, July 9 at the Little Prater Church of Christ with Evgs. Mike Rife, Jim Viers and Dr. Clint Sutherland officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were Mark Keene, Sandy Rowe, Monroe Stacy, Troy Brown, Charlie Stacy, Harold Hibbitts, Mike Stiltner, Gary Jude, Tim Elswick and Henry Shortridge.
  Honorary pallbearers were Arthur Stiltner, Lynn Sykes, Douglas Yates, Randy Wimmer, Gerald Vanover, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Steve Dawson, Jerry Bliffen, E.W. Damron, Harold Goins, Larry Fields, Frank Crum, Bob Smith and Raffael Farrow.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Little Prater Church of Christ Building Fund, Rt. 4, Box 88, Grundy, VA 24614 in his memory or to the Michael Trent Medical Fund, 1752 Lower Mill Branch Rd., Grundy, VA 24614.

Gertrude Rowe
(Rt. 618)

  Gertrude Street Rowe, 88, of the Rt. 618 section of Buchanan County, died Friday, July 6, 2007 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Rosa Caroline Street. She was retired as an LPN with the Buchanan County Health Department.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Julies Rowe; two brothers, Wallace Street and Charles Elliot Street; two sisters, Peg Maggie Waterhouse and Bea Street and four infant children.
  She is survived by one son, Lawrence (Larry) Rowe and wife, Wilma, of Upland, IN; two sisters, Sue Mann and husband, Henry, and Lou Burgess and husband, Tommy, both of Enka, NC; two grandchildren, Laura Coyle and husband, Patrick, and Chadwick Rowe and wife, Tessi; five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, July 10 in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed in the Rowe Cemetery at Rock Ridge Mountain.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Emory Eugene Keene
(Council)

  Emory Eugene Keene, 70, of Council, died Friday, July 6, 2007 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Clell, he was the son of the late Lazarus and Grace Hale Keene. He had lived in the Council area most of his life and was a member of the Free Christian Church on Big A Mountain. He was a retired coal miner, having last worked at Island Creek Coal Co. Local #1509.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Keene, and one sister, Dorothy Ball.
  He is survived by his wife, Sue Keene; one daughter, Patty and husband, Rick Helton, of Council; one grandson, Joshua Tiller and wife, Shelly, of Bee; one granddaughter, Tiffany Helton of Council and fiance', Robert Combs; one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson; one brother, Harlis (Fern) Keene of Fairborn, OH; six sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Mammie) Barrett of Abingdon, Mrs. Bill (Ruby) O'Quinn, of Honaker; Mrs. Glenn (Lucy) O'Quinn of Lebanon, Mrs. Hassell (Mary) Lambert of Honaker, Mrs. Giles (Sue) Ball of Honaker and Mrs. Eugene (Edda Mae) Rasnake of Honaker; five brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linkous and Marie Compton, Harold and Frances Lambert, Emory and Betty Hess and Danney and Audrey Barton, all of Council and Linkous and Geneva Bailey of Rowe; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday in Honaker with  the Revs. Giles Ball and Edward Tiller officiating. Interment followed in Russell Memorial Cemetery in Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were Joshua Tiller, Robert Combs, James Ball, Billy Joe Keene, Michael O'Quinn, Scotty, O'Quinn, Jeff O'Quinn and Darin O'Quinn.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Faisal Chaudhry, Billy Lee Ball, Johnny Wayne Keene, nephews and men of the Free Christian Church.

Opal I. Whitt
(Grundy)

  Opal I. Hamilton Whitt, 85, of Grundy, died Thursday, July 5, 2007at her home following an extended illness.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Oakley H. Hamilton and Mimie Ward Hamilton Coleman. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and a member of Grundy Baptist Church. She was a member of Eastern Star, the Red Hats and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl H. Whitt, April 4, 1997; one son, Wayne Whitt; one grandson, Michael A. Harszy; one sister, Bonnie Childress; and one brother, Richard Hamilton.
  She is survived by two daughters, Priscilla, and husband, Ron Harszy, of Swansea, IL and Linda Applegate of Frankfort, IL; one sister, Frances Lester of Roanoke;  four grandchildren, Rebecca Harszy and husband, Dean Cook, of St. Louis, MO, Daniel Harszy of Swansea, Samantha Whetstone of Chicago, IL and James Applegate of Frankfort; one great-grandson.
  Services were held Sunday, July 8 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Troy Street officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Elbert Lester, Don Harszy, Dean Cook, Jim Applegate, Alex Whetstone and Ron Harszy.
  Honorary pallbearers were members of the Red Hats.

Jackie L. Dotson
(Hurley)

  Jackie Lawrence Dotson, 53, of Hurley, died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at a Bristol, TN hospital.
  Born in Dayton, OH, he was the son of Frankie Justus Dotson of Hurley and the late Carson Dotson, Jr. He was a former coal miner.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by one daughter, Jessica Jade Dotson of Hurley; two grandchildren, Alex and William; one brother, Johnny Dotson of Hurley; two sisters, Sue Dotson and Linda Potter, both of Hurley; and one son-in-law, Marty Justice of Hurley.
  Services were held Tuesday, July 10 at Stopover Freewill Baptist Church, Stopover, KY, with the Revs. Jerry Ward and Tommy Conn officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Pallbearers were Harold Justus, Ricky Adkins, Eugene Drivers, Oliver Charles, Sambo Adkins and Tommy Jo Adkins.
  Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Mack Potter, Frankie Smith, David Smith, Ricky Rasnake, Marty Justice, John Potter, Uncle Harold Justus, Uncle Frankie D. Justice and Uncle Carl Justus.

Elbert Wampler, Jr.
(Lebanon, VA)

  Elbert Wampler, Jr., 82, of Lebanon, died Friday, July 6, 2007 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Elbert Ezra Wampler Sr. and Mary Iowa Turner Wampler. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving his country during World War II. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
  He is survived by special companion, Nell Wampler, of Lebanon; two daughters, Terri Wampler and Michelle Ratliff and husband, Mark, all of Lebanon; one son, Craig Wampler of Tennessee; three grandchildren, Brandon Rife, Kori Ratliff and Luke Ratliff; step-mother, Mary Belle Wood; one step-brother, Kester Wampler; three step-sisters, Glenda Ratliff, Gloria Wampler and Regina Wampler; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Revs. Carl Burmeier and Rick Meade officiating. Burial followed in the Wampler Cemetery on Hurricane Creek.
  Pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were members of VFW Post #9864 of Lebanon

Trula Lester
(Paynesville, WV)

  Trula McClanahan Lester, 84, of Paynesville, WV, formerly of Buchanan County, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late C.W. (Dot) and Flora Rowe McClanahan. She was a homemaker and member of the Old Regular Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Lester; two sons, Richard and Dennis Lester; three grandchildren, Stoney, Leon and Deon Lester; two brothers, Kermit and Russell McClanahan; and one twin sister, Beaulah Lester.
  She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Charles E. (Belva) Christian of Wolford, Gearlene Davis of Slate Creek, Mrs. Addison (Josephine) Mullins and Darlene Endicott, both of Paynesville, WV and Mrs. David (Ilene) Houchins of Tazewell; two sons, Herman Lester and wife, Frieda of Cherryville, NC and Bobby Lester and wife, Charlotte, of Paynesville; five brothers, Frank McClanahan and Branscome McClanahan, both of Grundy, Paul McClanahan of Johnson City, TN, Leo McClanahan of Elkton, MD and Chester McClanahan of New Baltimore, MI; three sisters, Thelma Whitt of Glade Springs and Nell Clevinger and Hazel Barnett, both of Elkton, MD; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, July 11 at Crossview Church of Christ in Paynesville with Elders Roscoe Crouse and Curtis Crouse and the Rev. Doug Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the Noah Mullins Cemetery, Paynesville.
  Pallbearers were family and friends.

Goldie Ann Breeding
(Cedar Bluff, VA)

  Goldie Ann Cole Breeding, 79, of Cedar Bluff, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 in a Richlands hospital following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Fannie Vandyke Cole, both Buchanan County natives. She had lived most of her life in Buchanan County until moving to the Tazewell County area 25 years ago. She was a retired cafeteria worker at Garden Elementary School and was a member of Richlands Tabernacle.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, seven brothers and one son-in-law, John Osborne.
  She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Breeding; three daughters, Brenda Vestel and husband, Kenneth, of Oakwood, Shirley Horton and husband, Mack, of Richlands and Darlene Osborne of Raven; four sons, Jimmy Breeding and wife, Carol, of Keen Mountain, the Rev. Donnie Breeding and wife, Alisha, of Hurley, Ronnie Breeding of Tazewell and Curtis Breeding and wife, Myra, of Richlands; three brothers, Victor Cole of Pilgrim Knob, Stuart Cole of Cedar Bluff and Dennis Cole of Raven; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, July 8 at Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands with the Revs. Ralph Hoton, David Horton and Bob Osborne officiating. Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were Tommy Vestal, Marshall Osborne, Jason Breeding, James Breeding, Willie Breeding, Brannon Breeding, Charlton Breeding, Samuel Hayden and Kobe Osborne.
  Honorary pallbearers were Jodi Osborne, Robin Horton, Kristie Leonard, Christine Hayden, Alyssa Osborne, Brice Ann Breeding, Kailyn Breeding, Brian McGraw, Dr. Larry Mitchell, Jim Osborne, second and fourth floor nursing staff at Clinch Valley Medical Center and Independent Home Health Staff.
  Hurst-Scott Funeral Home, Richlands, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Jordan
(Jackson, TN)

  Margaret "Marge" Jordan, 82, of Jackson, TN, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 in Jackson.
  Born in Pontotoc, MS, she was the daughter of the late John William Pritchard and Lillian Johnson Pritchard. She was a homemaker and was one of the organizers instrumental in building a new Grundy High School and public swimming pool for the community. She was a member of Grundy Baptist Church, was past president of the PTA, graduated from Lambuth College in Jackson and was a past member of the Jackson Symphony League, Jackson Golf and Country Club and the Jackson Garden Club. She participated in the Ladies Wednesday Night Bridge Club and various other mixed and ladies bridge clubs. She was a also a member of West Jackson Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandchild, David B. Jordan, III.
  She is survived by her husband, David B. Jordan, Sr.; three sons, David B. Jordan, Jr. and wife, Jama, and Terry Jordan and wife, Kathy, all of Kingsport, TN and Jonathan Jordan and wife, Holly, of Nashville, TN; eight grandchildren, Shawn P. Jordan, Robert L. Jordan, Alexander Jordan, Jeremy Stiltner, Jason Stiltner, Reagan Jordan, Elisha Jordan and Margaret Jordan; and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Saturday, July 7 in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with the Rev. Lonnie Sanders officiating. Burial followed in the Waller Douglas Cemetery in Henderson County.
  Pallbearers were Jeremy Stiltner, Jason Stiltner, Shawn Jordan, Robert Jordan, Alex Jordan and Steve Jordan.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of memorial contributions to West Jackson Baptist Church, 580 Oil Well Rd., Jackson, TN 38305 or David B. Jordan III Scholarship Fund at Virginia Military Institute.

Johnnie M. Carnell
(Bristol, TN)

  Johnnie Moses Carnell, 71, of Bristol, TN, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007 at his home.
  Born in Marfrance, WV, he was a son of the late Robert Neal Carnell and Ethel Virginia Widner Carnell. He had resided in Grundy prior to moving to Sullivan County, TN in 1978. He was a disabled miner, having worked for Burn Right Coal Company as a shovel operator. He had served as Clerk of the Grundy Church of God,  had served as a Council member at Trigg Street Church of God and was a member of Higher Ground Fellowship.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack Carnell and Jimmie Carnell, and by two half-brothers, James Shrewsberry and Jess Shrewsberry.
  He is survived by his wife, Frances; sons, Johnny Wayne Carnell and wife, Louetta, of Meadowview, Randy L. Carnell and wife, Debra, of Florence, SC and Daniel R. Carnell and wife, Libby, of Abingdon; brothers, Clarence Carnell and wife, Linda, of Cleveland, OH and Charlie Carnell and wife, Annabelle, of Marfrance, WV; sisters-in-law, Jean Carnell and Mae Carnell; grandchildren, Johnetta Farmer, Ashleigh Carnell, Justin Carnell, Jason Carnell and Johnny Wayne (J.W.) Carnell II; and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Saturday, July 7 at Farris Funeral Service, Main Street Chapel, Abingdon, with the Rev. Stephen Snead officiating. Entombment followed at Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum.
  Active pallbearers were Jason Carnell, Bobby Inscore, Barry Compton, Rick Compton, Kevin Farmer, Tim Farmer, James Jarvis and Robert Brown.
  Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Wayne Carnell II, Justin Lee Carnell, Dr. Shannon Finch, Clell Farmer, Joe Johnson, Paul Osborne and the men of Higher Ground Fellowship and Trigg Street Church of God.

Tiffany Ann Lester
(Bluefield, VA)

  Tiffany Ann Rowe Lester, 24, of Bluefield, VA, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
  Born in Tazewell, she was the daughter of Timothy Allen Lester of Bluefield and the late Melissa Ann Rowe Lester. She attended the Love of Jesus Tabernacle and was of the Holiness faith.
  In addition to her father, she is survived by one daughter, Kalie Sky Lester of Princeton, WV; two sisters, Brianna Mae Lester of Bluefield and Destiny Faye Dempsey of Princeton; one brother, Steven Allen Lester of Bluefield; maternal grandfather, Denny Rowe and maternal step-grandmother, Gail Rowe, both of Pounding Mill; maternal grandmother, Ruby Argabright of Princeton; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Carolyn Lester of Cedar Bluff; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
  Services were held Wednesday, July 11 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Danny Puckett and Jeffery Mullins officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were Cody Mullins, Everette Roy Rowe, Timmy Lester, David Mitchell, Jimmy Asbury, Nakia Mullins, Jerome Mullins,  Michael Mullins, Chadd Mullins, Brandon Mullins and Eugene Roark.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
