Justus to Seek Re-Election in Knox as Independent
Hayes, Honaker, Lester File for School Board

by Scotty Wampler
News Editor
Thirty-five candidates seeking office in November are left standing following recent nominations by the county Democrat and Republican parties and recent filings for school board and the board of supervisors.
Democrats selected their slate of candidates at the party's annual convention Saturday. Incumbent Knox Supervisor Pat Justus, having not received the Democrat nod, has filed for re-election as an Independent candidate.
Three newcomers have recently filed to seek election to the school board. Belinda Honaker (Garden), Ronnie Lee Lester (Rocklick) and Paul Hayes (Prater) will all vie for school board seats in their respective magisterial districts.
Also, Wade McNeely has filed for candidacy for one of three Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District director seats.
All seven supervisors seats, as well as the constitutional offices of sheriff, circuit court clerk, commissioner of revenue, treasurer and commonwealth's attorney will be on the ballot.
Additionally seven non-partisan posts on the Buchanan County School Board will be up for election on the November 6 ballot.

Staff Reporter

All new carnival theme rides and an amazing entertainment lineup are just a few things event-goers can expect at this year's Buchanan County Fair, July 11-14.
According to Buchanan County Fair Association Chairperson Tracy Bostic, attractions and vendors are being added almost daily.
Event-goers can expect a new carnival-style fair this year with more actual carnival rides, she says. But, that isn't the only thing those attending can look forward to. More events, competitions and contests will be held this year to tickle anyone's fancy.
Vendors, volunteers and sponsors are all continuing to be sought, Bostic added.
For more information, those interested in volunteering or sponsoring may contact Bostic at (276) 597-2442.
Vendors may apply by calling (276) 566-8255 or (276) 531-8802.
"We're really excited about our entertainment," Bostic says. "From what I understand, it's one of the best county fair lineups going."
On Wednesday, July 11, Kid's Day will welcome all children 11 years of age and under free from 4-6 p.m. Free carnival rides will be offered from 5-6 p.m.
The Great Bicycle Giveaway will follow at 6 p.m.
Admission is $10 for ages 12 and up, and a $10 wristband is required for unlimited rides from 6 p.m. until closing.
Entertainment for the night will include Alex Hibbitts & Band, the Brian Beavers Band and Blue Highway.
On Thursday, July 12, officials are welcoming families around the area to Family Night. Games and other offerings will focus on the family, encouraging more families to attend.
For instance, a scavenger hunt will offer a $100 prize. The cost to enter is only $1.
And, people should remember to bring their canned and other goods for exhibit.
Event-goers will be charged a $10 entrance fee that allows them unlimited rides all day at no additional cost. Exhibits and much more will also be offered.
Entertainment for the night will include Higher Power, Darrell Webb and The Grascals.
Senior Citizen Day and Heritage Day will jointly be held on Friday, July 13.
Seniors will be admitted for free for a period of time. Admission for all others is $10, which includes free rides.
Senior citizens are invited to participate in the events planned by the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens.
In addition, there will be an art contest and separate photography contest, as well as a book signing.
You Can Be A Star Karaoke Contest Finals get underway at 6 p.m. and Regan Boggs is slated as the night's top entertainment.
Gates open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 14. Some events that can be expected on this day include a pet show, car show and motorcycle show.
Again, a $10 entrance fee entitles the purchaser to unlimited carnival rides.
Entertainment for the night will include Danny Perkins, Cowboy Crush and Trent Tomlinson.
Gates open at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 11, 12 and 13 and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 14.
Event-goers may purchase a $10 wristband for unlimited rides each day.
