Carrie
Elizabeth Wright Tiller, 83, of Vansant, died Thursday, June
22, 2006 at her home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of
the late Grover Cleveland and Mahalia Kansas Stiltner Wright.
She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, was of the
Regular Baptist faith and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Muncie Rell Tiller, in 1976, three
sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by seven daughters, Mavis and
husband, Roger Stacy and Donna and husband, Tolbert Adkins,
all of Vansant, Arlene Howard of Culpepper, Loraine Adkins of
Dumfries, Kay and husband, Jerry Brown, of Bedford, Anita and
husband, Chester Donahue of Moneta and Audrey and husband,
Jennings Boyd of Bishop; three sons, Dean and wife, Sandy
Tiller of Vansant, Gary Tiller of Lebanon and Alvery Tiller of
Abingdon; 33 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, June 25 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Roger Coleman officiating.
Burial followed in the Wright Family Cemetery, Leetown curve,
near Grundy.
Active pallbearers were grandsons.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Virgie Young
(Hurley)
Virgie
Young, 87, of Hurley, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended
illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of
the late James Basil and Daisy Dotson May. She was a
lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Sulphur
Spring Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Roosevelt Young, in 1997; one son,
James Arthur Young; six sisters, Bertha May, Lucy Justus,
Margie Ellen May, Minnie Hurley, Sarah Elizabeth May and
Lydia Spencer; and four brothers, Howard, Theoda, Jessie and
Joey May.
She is survived by three daughters, Pearlie and
husband, Tim Deel of Prater, Shirley Brown and Mary and
husband, Harold Justus, all of Hurley; one son, Robert Young
and fiance’, Sherry Justus, of Hurley; two brothers,
Arthur May and Herbert May, both of Hurley; 11 grandchildren
and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, June 25 at Sulphur
Springs Primitive Baptist Church with Elders Shawn Dotson,
Jeff Dotson, Brian Moore, Jimmy Lee Smith, Estil Hackney and
others officiating. Burial followed in the May Family
Cemetery on May Branch near Hurley.
Active pallbearers were family and friends.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Fay Blankenship
(Grundy)
Fay
Fields Blankenship, 83, of Grundy, died Saturday, June 24,
2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an
extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of
the late George W. and Gracie McClanahan Fields. She was a
life-long resident of Buchanan County and a member of the
Grundy Church of Christ where she was actively working in
the nursery, the Butterfly Ladies Group and the choir until
her illness. She and her twin sister, Elsie, graduated from
Mountain Mission School’s Class of 1941. During the World
War II years, Fay and her dad operated a General Merchandise
Store at the mouth of Lynn Camp Creek, Artia, Va. She
married Virgil Blankenship in 1947 and became a homemaker
with the exception of one year, where she taught at Lynn
Camp Elementary School.
She and her sister, Edith Yuhasz, shared a home
for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Virgil R. Blankenship, April 9, 1966,
and one brother, Dorse Fields.
She is survived by one son, Gerald (Hank) and
wife, Shirley Blankenship of Grundy; four sisters, Edith
Yuhasz of Grundy, Opal Belcher of Ft. Myers, FL, Ruby Cline
of Brevard, NC and Elsie Cline of Lynchburg; one
sister-in-law, Fern Fields of Abingdon; one granddaughter,
two nieces and five nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, June 28 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent and Mike Rife
officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial
Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were Ryan Mullins, David
Yuhasz, Greg Raleigh, Travis Raleigh, Chris Dykes, Herb
Fields, curtis R. Mullins and Larry Cline.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. James M. Swiney,
Ricky Lee, Troy Viers, Jay Raleigh, Otis Elswick, Junior
Jackson, Claude Ratliff, Tex Dales, Rusty Owens, Dr. J.G.
Patel and Elders and deacons of Grundy Church of Christ.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Rev. Joe Orvel Gross
(Whitewood)
The
Rev. Joe Orvel Gross, 68, of Whitewood, died Thursday, June
22, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following an extended
illness.
Born in Bartley, WV, he was the son of the late
Jacob Kent and Stella B. Estep Gross, both Bartley, WV
natives. He had made his home in the Whitewood area most of
his life and was the pastor of Rosa Cole Pentecostal
Holiness Church at Jewell Valley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by one sister, Sue Adair, and one brother, Jim Gross.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Dorothy
Gross; one daughter, Donna Osborne and husband, Ricky, of
Lebanon; two sons, Michael Gross and wife, Pam and Keith
Gross and wife, Linda, all of Whitewood; five sisters,
Katherine Bowman of War, WV, Gladys Akers of Raven, Margaret
Tolliver of Raysal, WV, Beatrice Fay Christian of Eckman, WV
and Brenda Linkous of Beckley, WV; 12 grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday at Hurst-Scott Funeral
Chapel in Richlands with the Revs. Jimmy Justice and Bobby
Smith officiating. Interment followed in the White Jewell
Cemetery on White Mountain near Jewell Valley.,
Pallbearers were friends and family members.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Virginia F. Elswick
(Deskins)
Virginia
F. (Jenny) Elswick, 89, of the Deskins section of Vansant,
died Monday, June 26, 2006 in Pikeville Methodist Hospital,
Pikeville, KY, following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of
the late George and Ema Yates Mullins. She was a life-long
resident of Buchanan County, was of the Baptist faith, was
the last surviving member of her immediate family and a
homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Earl Rell Elswick; one daughter,
Georgia Lane; one son, Dewey Elswick; one brother and three
sisters.
She is survived by five daughters, Patsy and
husband, Clayton Deel, of Vansant, Darlene and husband, Bill
Stiltner, of Harman, Lillian Daugherty of Spring City, TN,
Lois Stiltner of Miller Creek, NC and Ollie Stump of
Richlands; three sons, Leon and wife, Ruby Elswick, of
Grundy, Theodore Elswick of Palmetto, FL and James and wife,
Lillian Elswick of Warren, MI; 18 grandchildren, 26
great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and
three step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, June 30 at 1 p.m.
at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Jim Hill
officiating. Burial will follow in the Elswick Cemetery on
Devil’s Branch at Deskins. Friends may call at the funeral
home Wednesday afternoon at 5 p.m. with evening services set
for 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Active pallbearers will be grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be the nursing staff
of Mountain View Nursing Home.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of
arrangements.

Rocky D. Lane

Rocky
D. Lane, 47, of the Thompson Valley section of Tazewell,
formerly of Grundy, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 in Buchanan
County.
Born in Grundy, he was a son of the late Estil
and Kathleen Mullins Lane. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah J. Lane; one
son, Chadrick Lane of Charlottesville; two sisters, Diane
Dotson and husband, Doug, and Stephanie Stiltner and
husband, Johnny, all of Grundy; two brothers, Jerry Lane of
Grundy and Curtis Lane and wife, Patricia, of Tazewell;
several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, June 26 at Peery
& St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the
Revs. Charles Poteat and Margie Poteat officiating. Burial
followed in the Clevinger Cemetery at Belcher’s Fork.
Family and friends, including special friend,
James Osborne, served as pallbearers.
