Edgar
(Ed) F. Baker, Sr., 81, of Hurley, died Sunday, June 11, 2006
at his home.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the
late Alex Baker and Louise Rife Baker. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County, a retired coal miner, and was a
member of Old Sulphur Springs Old Regular Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by his wife, Goldie Ann Blankenship Baker, March 17,
2006; one daughter, Shirley Lou Baker; one son, Hillard Ray
Baker; one grandson, Scotty Dean Baker; three brothers, Andrew
Baker, Ervin Baker and James Baker; and two sisters, Lucy Hart
and Virgie Jones.
He is survived by four daughters, Sandra Fields
and husband, Dewey, Dianne Vance and husband, Joseph, Patsy
Graley and husband, John, all of Hurley, Judy Meadows and
husband, Braxton, of Phelps, KY; six sons, Jimmy Baker and
wife, Betty, Roger Baker and wife, Cathy, Steve Baker and
wife, Glenna, Randy Baker and Mark Baker, all of Hurley, Edgar
Baker, Jr. and wife, Patsy, of Grundy; one sister, Martha
Hilton of Green Cove Springs, FL; two brothers, Calvin Baker
of Green Cove Springs, FL and Stuart Baker of Reynolds, GA; 19
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, June 14 at Old
Sulphur Springs Old Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with
Elders Danny McCoy, Danny Hurley, Willis Conrad and other
Elders of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating. Burial
followed in the Baker Cemetery at Hurley.
Active pallbearers were grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers were brothers and sisters of
the Old Regular Baptist Church.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home, Grundy, was in
charge of arrangements.

Gary Allen Matney

Creek)
Gary
Allen Matney, 58, of the Slate Creek section of Buchanan
County, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 following an extended
illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Ruby
Blevins Matney of Grundy and the late John D. Matney. He was
a life-long resident of Buchanan County, was a disabled coal
miner and last worked for Loose Jaw Coal Company. He served
in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict,
receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam
Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Metal, AIR Medal, Army
Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Medal and the Purple
Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Ann Barton
Matney; one daughter, Kimberly Lynn and husband, Roy Mullins
of Abingdon; one son, Michael Allen Matney and fiance’,
Alice Ann Powers of Grundy; two step-sons, Kenny Allen and
wife, Keisha Barton of Charleston, WV and Willard Junior and
wife, Jeannie Barton, of Abingdon; two sisters, Arlene and
husband, Harvey Matney Jr. of Grundy and Della Ann and
husband, Jim Shortridge, of Vansant; three brothers, Teddy
Ray and wife, Barbara Matney and Tony and wife, Wanda Matney,
all of Grundy and Ricky and wife, Sherry Matney, of Big
Rock; one sister-in-law, Virginia Surrett; and 10
grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, June 9 at Grundy
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Chapman officiating.
Burial followed in the Mary Lou Cemetery on State Line Ridge
near Paynesville, WV. Full military rites were conducted at
the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the
American Legion.
Active pallbearers were family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers were Bryan McConnell, Bill
Duncan, Butch Wilson, Mike Counts, James R. McClanahan, Jr.,
Coburn Stacy, Timmy Barton and James Surrett.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of

Arnold
Junior Lee, 67, of Big Rock, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at
his home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the
late Arvil and Lillian Williams Lee. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and a member of Mountain View
Church of Christ. He was a retired salesman.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in
death by four brothers, Robert, Stewart, Elster and Hadley
Lee; one niece and one nephew.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose Hall Lee;
one daughter, Shelia and husband, Kevin Ward of Big Rock;
one son, David and wife, Karen Lee of Raven; four sisters,
Ruby Lee of Big Rock, Gayle Taylor of Sterling Heights, MI,
Mary Rose Perkins of Fenton, MI and Shirley Poland of
Warren, MI; three brothers, Dewey Lee of Big Rock, Willie
Lee of Warren and Shad Lee of Melbourne, FL; one
granddaughter and three grandsons.
Services were held Monday, June 12 at Mountain
View Church of Christ at Mouthcard, KY with Minister Frank
Crum officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest
Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were Sewell Mackins, Ricky
Mackins, Jimmy Abriel, Jimmy Abriel, Jr., Bob Peloski,
Dickie Belcher, Brian Lee and Tommy Hall.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland
and men of Mountain View Church of Christ.
Grundy Funeral Home was in charge.

Elden Ward, 49, of Patterson, died Monday, June 5, 2006
following a brief illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of
Beatrice Sizemore Ward of Patterson and the late Rev. Dewey
G. Ward. He attended Grundy High School, was a retired coal
miner and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in
death by his paternal grandparents, John and Maxie Ward; and
maternal grandparents, the Rev. Amos and Lily Sizemore.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his
wife, Brenda Ward; one daughter, Renee Ward of Wilkesboro,
NC; four brothers, Ralph Ward of Williamson, WV, Danny Ward
and wife, Susie, of Alabaster, AL, Raymond Ward and wife,
Brenda, of Tazewell and Andrew Ward and wife, Wendy, of
Elizabeth City, NC; three sisters, Phyllis Osborne of Keen
Mountain, Faith Fuller and husband, Mike, of Patterson and
Lois Martineau and husband, Dan, of Battle Creek, MI;
several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Friday, June 9 at Buchanan
Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with the Revs. Dan
Martineau, Frank Blanken-ship and Jerry Matney officiating.
Burial followed in the Ward Cemetery at Pilgrim Knob.
Pallbearers were family and friends.

Arland
England, 81, of Grundy, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
A native of Buchanan County, he was a son of the
late Plezz and Ellen Coleman England. He was a member of
Mountain View Old Regular Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by his wife, Bunie Deel England.
She is survived by two daughters, Tina Deel of
Johnson City, TN and Gearld England of Columbus, OH; two
sons, Harold and Ricky England, both of Chicago, IL; three
sisters, Margie May and Bessie Justice, both of Hurley and
Mary Ann of New York; four brothers, Junior, Jimmy, Lando
and Dallas England, all of Hurley; and one grandson.
Services will be held Thursday, June 15 at 11
a.m. at Mountain View Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders
Andy Deel, Toy Looney and Terry O’quinn officiating.
Burial will follow in the John Conoway Cemetery at Rt. 2,
Haysi.

Bernard
Johnson, 72, of the Combs Ridge section of Council, died
Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the
late Marvin Johnson and Ora Hurt Harris Johnson. He was a
disabled coal miner and member of the UMWA. A lifelong
resident of the area, he was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by two sons, Hobert Johnson and Homer Johnson; six
brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Johnson; one
son, Herbert and wife, Ellen Johnson, of Churchill, TN; two
sisters, Monnie Wilson of Council and Maudie Johnson of
Berwind, WV; brothers-in-law, Jerry Stevens and wife, Mary,
Carl Stevens and wife, Clara and Leroy Stevens and wife,
Susie; one grandson, one great-granddaughter; several nieces
and nephews.
Services will be held today (Thursday) at 1 p.m.
at Honaker with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating.
Interment will follow in Johnson Cemetery on Combs Ridge.
Pallbearers will be Ned Stevens, Charlie Combs,
Matt Quillen, Jerome Stevens, Fairley Combs and Beverly
Sykes.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Stevens, Jerry
Stevens, Curtis Compton, Carlos Blankenship, Kenneth
Comp-ton, Freeman Harris and William Rasnake.

Murphy, 72, of New Carlisle, OH, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006
at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, OH.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of
the late Frank and Maudie (McFarland) Ball.
In addition to her parents, she was also
preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Presley; and three
brothers, Freeman, Nedium and her twin brother, Gray.
She is survived by her husband, Elijah H.
Murphy; two sons, Don Wayne Murphy and Ronald K. Murphy,
Sr.; two daughters, Donna and Phil Roche and Diane (Murphy)
Dearing, all of New Carlisle; two sisters, Sue and Tony Boyd
of New Carlisle and Joyce Johnson of Dayton; six
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, June 3 at Newcomer
Funeral Home & Crematory in Dayton. Interment followed
in the Byron Cemetery, Fairborn, OH.

Edmund O’quinn, 84, of Bee, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006
at his home.
Born in Bee, he was a son of the late William
and Maudie Hackney O’quinn. He was a Haysi High School
graduate and a retired Navy veteran, serving during World
War II in the Pacific.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by a sister, Onie Workman; one brother, Ollie O’quinn;
two nephews and a niece.
He is survived by one sister, Gloria Jean and
husband Clemon Jackson of Bee; six nieces, Patricia
Pascual, Judy Gillespi, Judy Gallegos, Rita Kay Jackson,
Janet Hardy and Sherry Sutton; three nephews, Roger Good,
Danny O’quinn and Bobby O’quinn; several great-nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Services were held Friday, June 9 at Haysi
Funeral Home with the Revs. Clyde Lambert and Edward
Tiller officiating. Entombment followed in Forest Hill
Memory Gardens, Abingdon.
Pallbearers were Roger Good, Danny O’quinn,
Matthew Hardy, William Hardy, Butch Gillespi, Phillip
Presley, Bobby O’quinn, Darrell O’quinn and Charles
Stevens.

Jewell Ridge, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at her home
following an extended illness.
Born in Jolo, WV, she was the daughter of the
late Jody and Amanda Wimmer Rife. She was a member of Oak
Grove Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her first husband, Earl Breeden; her second
husband, Garlin Hale; one son, Ronald Puckett; one
great-grandson, Emit Smith; and one brother, Ondas Rife.
She is survived by two daughters, Mona Wagner
and husband, J.C. of Pilgrim Knob and Cheryl Rife and
husband, Ray, of Pilgrim Knob; three sons, A.C. Breeden
and wife, Leslie, of Vermilion, OH, Ernest Breeden and
wife, Sue, of Pea Patch and Lowell Breeden and wife, Peggy
of Kimboton, OH; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Puckett of
Pea Patch; five brothers, Hassel Rife of Jolo, WV, Ulis
Rife of Brenton, WV, Creed Rife and wife, Ruby, of
Rosedale, Otto Rife of Pineville, WV and Ray Rife and
wife, Geraldine of Statesville, NC; 17 grandchildren, 27
great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and
five step-great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, June 12 in Buchanan
Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain, with Pastor Charlie
Cooper officiating. Burial followed in the Knob Cemetery
at Pea Patch.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers were Preferred hospice
employees Stella Crist, Pam Bentley, Tammy Vencill and
Michelle Carter.

Owens, 80, of Defiance, OH, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006
at Mercy Hospital in Defiance.
Born in Pennsylvania, WV, she was the daughter
of George Owens and Tilda Thomas Owens. She was a member
of Restoration Tabernacle Church in Defiance and was a
homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded
in death by her husband, James Howard Owens in 1995; one
daughter, Irene Owens; two brothers, Lee and Roy Owens;
and one sister, Gladys Colley.
She is survived by one son, Carl Gene (Sue)
Owens of Defiance; three grandchildren, seven
great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and
step-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, June 10 at
Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home in Defiance with the Rev.
Janet Strickland officiating. Burial was in Ketron
Memorial Gardens in Lebanon on Monday, June 12.

Salyers, 62, of Richlands, died Saturday, June 10, 2006
following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter
of Bernice Shortt Keen and the late Stuart Shortt. She was
a Sunday School teacher at Calvary Temple Church for some
30 years, was a member of the CT Women On a Mission group
and was a homemaker.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in
death by her brother, Jimmy Irvan Shortt.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by
her husband, Charles F. Salyers, Sr.; one daughter, Donna
Horn, and husband, Ronnie, of Rosedale; two sons, Chuck
Salyers and wife, Janie, of Paintlick and Tracy Salyers
and wife, Trish, of Roanoke; two sisters, Janet Boyd and
husband, Jimmie, of Swords Creek and Judy Vannoy and
husband, Mike, of Richlands; three brothers, Jack Shortt
and wife, Brenda, of Swords Creek, John Shortt and wife,
Gaynell, of Thompson Valley and Jerry Shortt and wife,
Sue, of Saltville; three grandsons, two granddaughters,
one step great-granddaughter.
Services were held Monday, June 12 at
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands with the Rev. Grady
McGlothlin officiating. Graveside services were held
Tuesday at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
Pallbearers were Debbie Horne, Cookie Wheeler,
Tammy Moore, Joyce Meadows, Kathy Keen, Anna Sparks and
Teresa Rose.
