CHS
Student Wins School Calendar Art Contest for Second
Time

"When
you dream, dream big!"
The
title of Charlie Rasnake's entry in Buchanan County
Public Schools' Calendar Art Contest was meant to
inspire others. What Charlie didn't realize was that
the message would remind him anything is possible.
After
winning last year's contest, Charlie says he never
believed he'd win again.
"I
figured, since I won it once already, it'd be someone
else this year. They wouldn't pick the same person
again," he says.
But,
when teachers all over Buchanan County encouraged
their students to participate in the contest, Charlie
rolled back his sleeves and decided to give it his
best, regardless of the outcome.
Given
two weeks to complete the assignment, he says all he
knew was he wanted to draw an animal this time around;
considering, he'd drawn a boy for last year's winning
piece.
Taking
a note from the books of his childhood, Charlie says
he decided to draw a cow jumping over the moon.
But,
in the back of Charlie's mind, he still never believed
he would win.

The
Buchanan County Department of Social Services is
hoping to increase its budget for the new fiscal year
in the coming months.
DSS
Director Judy Holland made an appearance before the
Board of Supervisors last Thursday to discuss the
proposed budget for the agency.
"I
pointed out to them that it might be possible to come
back to it during the course of the [fiscal]
year," Holland said after the meeting.
Late
last month, a public hearing was set by the Board of
Supervisors for residents to provide comments
regarding the proposed county budget for the fiscal
year 2008-2009.
The
budget proposed for DSS was set at $1,046,313 by the
board, lowering it from $1,495,374, a sum which was
initially requested by the agency.
Holland
said she was hoping for a budget increase from the sum
which was set by the board.
