Governor's Cup Mine Contest Held |

Responding
to a mock disaster at simulated mines, rescue teams from three
states participated in the Governor's Cup Mine Rescue
Contest Friday at Southwest Virginia Community College.
Held annually for more than 20 years, the contest is
presented by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and
Energy.
According to Virginia Mining Association Executive
Director Dink Shackleford, rescue personnel use contests like
this one to practice all they've learned about mining rescue
and emergency situations.
Upon arrival at the "scene," rescue personnel
were briefed on the severity of the situation and problems
they were to face. A member of the team would then serve as
briefing officer, informing his teammates where to go in the
"mine" and where to build ventilation shafts. As the
team checked the safety and security of the faux mine, it
discovered everything from "victims" to abandoned
equipment.
