Arthur Prentiss Vanover
(Little Prater)

  Arthur Prentiss Vanover, 83, of the Little Prater section of Buchanan County, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late George and Lilly Mae Vanover. He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and a member of Little Prater Church of Christ where he served as an Elder. He served in the United States Navy for four years during World War II, was a life-time member of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion, where he served as post commander and had participated in more than 200 military funerals. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 746 and was a retired mechanic and electrician from Jewell Coal & Coke Company.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Pass Vanover, March 10, 2003; brothers, John T and Grover C. Vanover and two infant brothers; and step-mother, Edna Stiltner Vanover.
  He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann and husband, Darrel Deel, of Grundy and Tammie Elswick of Salisbury, NC; one son, Terry Lee Vanover of Tazewell; one sister, Kate Pass of Goodlettsville, TN; two brothers, Harold Vanover of Tucson, AZ and Jack D. Vanover of Fairview, TN; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Tuesday, May 30 at the Little Prater Church of Christ with Evgs. Michael Trent, Troy Brown and Gerald Vanover officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were Chad Thompson, Jonathan Vanover, Dathan Vanover, Patrick Deel, Christy Deel Thompson and Michael Elswick.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. M.V. Pillai, Dr. Ramesh Kabaria and staff, Margie Coleman, Eugene Whited, nieces and nephews.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Willard B. Blankenship
(Oakwood)

  Willard Boone Blankenship, 66, of Oakwood, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at Select Specialty Hospital-TriCities, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Pike County, KY, he was a son of the late Frank and Octavia Luster Blankenship. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a member of Garden Creek Church of Christ. He was a retired employee of Pinkerton Security Service as a security officer.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Lydia England; and three brothers, Chester, Clell and Elijah Blankenship.
  He is survived by his wife, Veda Fern Wess Blankenship; one daughter, Jean Davis of Harman; three sons, Marcus Blankenship and Bradley Blankenship, both of Hurley and Johnny Dale Blankenship of New Market, MD; and four grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, May 31 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Rusty Owens officiating. Burial followed in the Wess Cemetery on Main Knox near Hurley.
  Active pallbearers were relatives and friends.

James Franklin Hankins
(Big Rock)

  James Franklin Hankins, 76, of Big Rock, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 at his lake home in Abingdon, following an extended illness.
  Born in West Virginia, he was a son of the late Dewey and Fannie Tolliver Hankins. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and was of the Protestant faith. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local No. 7025.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Junior Hankins; one brother, Robert Lee Hankins; four granddaughters and one great-grandson.
  He is survived by his wife, Goldie McCoy Hankins; one daughter, Rita and husband, James Reynolds, of Bristol, TN; two sons, Dewey Franklin Hankins and Robert Lee and wife, Welthie Hankins, all of Big Rock; two sisters, Ruth Lester of Big Rock and Wanda Nuckles of Davenport; two brothers, Bill Hankins of Maxie and Kennith Hankins of Bristol, TN; two granddaughters, one grandson and two great-granddaughters.
  Services were held Wednesday, May 31 at Big Rock Church of Christ with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Jim J. Ratliff
(Maxie)

  Jim J. Ratliff, 85, of Maxie, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Grundy following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Orie Stiltner Ratliff. He was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ and was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company with 42 years of service. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Mays Ratliff; two brothers, Ercil Ratliff and Amel Ratliff; three sisters, Villia Weaver, Eulia Wright and Retha Miller; one grandson, David Kiser; and one granddaughter, Joanna Carol Ratliff.
  He is survived by two daughters, Teresa Kiser of Maxie and Melissa R. Lester of Pikeville, KY; two sons, Gary Ratliff of Grundy and Gregory Ratliff of Florala, AL; five sisters, Udell Darnell of Big Rock, Jerrell Anderson of Lick Creek, KY, Anna Ruth McCall of Steeleville, IL, Marie Recent of Williamsburg and Emil Ratliff of Maynardville, TN; one brother, Lester Ratliff of Louisa, KY; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, May 28 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mudlick Cemetery at Maxie. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.

George Carl Vandyke
(Vansant)

  George Carl Vandyke, 93, of Vansant, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Polly Ann Sisk Vandyke. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Dry Fork Primitive Baptist Church for some 38 years. Her served in the United States Navy during World War II as a supervisor of personnel and living quarters. He was a heavy equipment operator and foreman for Jewell Smokeless Inc. where he retired with more than 20 years of service. He was a professional bowler.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virgie Mae Deel Vandyke, June 2, 1973; four sisters, Mary Cox, Martha Street, Pauline Copenhaver and Ruth Viers; one brother, Linkous Vandyke; and one son-in-law, Larry Mullins.
  He is survived by his second wife, Crissie Mullins Hess Vandyke; two daughters, Janice Mullins Bartley of Vansant and Carol and husband, David J. Keen of Bluefield, VA; two sons, Sonny and wife, Geneva Vandyke of Rowe and Jimmy and wife, Betty Jane Vandyke of Beavercreek, OH; two sisters, Belle Anderson of Vansant and Cindy Auxter of Freemont, OH; three brothers, Clarence Vandyke, Estel Vandyke and Junior and wife, Martha Vandyke, all of Vansant; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, May 29 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Scott Vandyke and William L. Neeley officiating. Burial followed in the Dry Fork Cemetery near Vansant. Full military rites were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were Timothy Deskins, Timothy McGlothlin, Steve Vandyke, Matthew Vandyke, Jordan Vandyke, Shawn Deskins, Jonathan Vandyke and Brian Krimmer.

Wilma Jean Keene
(Patterson)

  Wilma Jean Gibson Keene, 63, of Patterson, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Kentucky, she was the daughter of Ethel Johnson Gibson of Patterson and the late Raymond (Hoot) Gibson. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Patterson Deliverance Tabernacle and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Keene, May 30, 2001.
  In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Tamara Lynn Dalton and husband, Johnny, and Karissa Jean Keene, all of Patterson; one son, Leonard (Lenny) Wayne Keene and Gina Keene of Ohio; two grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, May 27 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Jack Ward and Troy Lester officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Walter E. McClanahan
(Breaks)

  Walter Eugene McClanahan, 51, of Breaks, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 in Dublin.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Manda Ellen Looney McClanahan of Breaks and the late Fon McClanahan, Sr. He was a retired mechanic and a member of the Breaks Church of Christ.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Linda Lou Murrow, Geneva Gale Matchett and Sandra Carol McClanahan; and one brother, Kenneth Estil McClanahan.
  In addition to his mother, he is survived by five sisters, Amelia Ernestine Bailey and Satchie Mae Stewart both of Breaks, Mervill Frances Cox of Interlachen, FL, Debra Ellen Smith of Princeton, WV and Eura La-Verne McClanahan of Palatka, FL; and one brother, Fon McClanahan, Jr. of Haysi.
  Services were held Sunday, May 28 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Minister Mike Stuart officiating. Burial followed in the K.S. Colley Cemetery at Breaks.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Mary Belle Charles
(Wolford)

  Mary Belle Charles, 83, of Wolford, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Barbara Blankenship Bandy. She was a homemaker, a former employee of the old Grundy Hospital and a member of North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church since 1963.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harve Charles; one son, Banner Charles; three brothers, Corbin, Willard and Burton Bandy; and two sisters, Lona Stacy and Goldie Stacy.
  She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James (Grace) Stacy of Wolford; two sons, Roy Charles of Wolford and Warren Charles and wife, Shirley, of Abingdon; two daughters-in-law, Martha Charles of Grundy and Sharon Charles of North Carolina; one sister, Hilda Blankenship of Hurley; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, May 29 at North Springs Old Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with Elders of the Old Regular Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Davis Cemetery at Wolford.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and friends.

Virginia Ella Justus
(Grundy)

  Virginia Ella Wolford Justus, 85, of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Dan Wolford and Sally Ward Wolford. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, and a 50-year member of the Big Rock Pentecostal Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Justus; nine brothers, Ed Wolford, Eugene Wolford, Elzie Wolford, Ernest Wolford, Emery Wolford, Lonnie Wolford, Tommy Wolford, Burlin Wolford and Anthony Wolford.
  She is survived by four daughters, Priscilla Ann Justus of the home, Bertha Ann Walsh and Lula Keen and husband, Thurman, all of Rt. 1, Grundy, Dolly Belcher and husband, Harrison, of Princeton, WV; two sons, Homer Justus and wife, Mary, of Big Rock and Randy Wolford of Jenkins, KY; one sister, Sarah Ida Prater of Grundy; one brother, Anderson Ance Wolford of Roseann; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), June 1 at 1 p.m. at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy with the Revs. Danny Hess and Derek Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers will be nephews.
  Honorary pallbeares will be Jon Howson, Johnnie Combs, Stephen Fields, Hamilton Jones, Rick Jones, Steve Nelson, Mike Artrip, Dr. J.G. Patel and Total Home Care Hospice.  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Janet Matney
(Springfield, VA)

  Janet Matney, 94, of Springfield, formerly of Buchanan Coundy, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at her retirement center in Springfield following a brief illness.
  Born in Scott County, she was the daughter of Wilburn and Susan Stallard. She grew up in the Midway community of Scott County and was a longtime resident of Grundy. She was a member of Grundy United Methodist Church and had taught elementary school for some 33 years.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Matney; four brothers, Cranston Stallard, Denver Stallard, Howard Stallard and Kermit Stallard; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Matney.
  She is survived by one daughter, Eugenia, one son, Joseph and wife, Christinia, one granddaughter, Katherine Saunders and great-granddaughter, Emma Saunders, all of Northern Virginia; and one brother, Spencer Stallard and wife, Virginia, of Weber City;
  In keeping with her wishes, her body was cremated. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 3 at Grundy United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lester Frank presiding and the Rev. J.N. Howard presenting the memorial sermon. A brief reception will follow the service.

Pauline Owens Deel
(Mt. Carmel, TN)

  Pauline Owens Deel, 82, of Mt. Carmel, TN, formerly of Buchanan County, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late George and Myrtle McFadden Owens. She had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years prior to moving to Mt. Carmel. She was a member of Mt. Carmel Senior Citizens, was of the Primitive Baptist faith and a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Deel, May 12, 1998; one daughter, Jeanie Parker, July 23, 2002; and two brothers, Newland Owens and Gerald Owens.
  She is survived by one brother, Jack D. Owens of Vansant; four grandchildren, Marla Parker, Dana Kerns, Jamie Parker and Shae Parker, all of Front Royal; and eight great-granddaughters.
  Services were held Friday, May 26 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Dora Adeline Lockhart
(Fairfax, VA)

  Dora Adeline Breeding Lockhart, 92, of Fairfax, formerly of Harman, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at her home in Fairfax following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Hettie OQuinn Breeding. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life until her retirement when she moved to Fairfax. She was a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church, was a member of the Eastern Star, Rebekkah Lodge and was a retired postmistress for the Maxie Post Office with more than 25 years of service.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Taylor Lockhart, February 12, 1995; one sister, Viola Breeding; and two brothers, Noah and Walter Breeding.
  She is survived by three sisters, Dorothy and husband, Sam Chancey and Gladys Dingus, all of Ocala, FL and Muriel and husband, Roger Doyon, of Fairfax; one brother, Lee and wife, Margie Breeding of Ocala.
  Services were held Friday, May 26 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shea Shrader officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were friends.

Dolly Irene Compton
(Davenport, VA)

  Dolly Irene Compton, 86, of the Hurricane Creek section of Davenport, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late George and Tiny Ratliff Breeding. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a member of Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Arthur Compton, August 15, 1990, and two infant sons.
  She is survived by five sons, Harper Compton and wife, Loretha. Harmon Compton and wife, Carlene and Terry Allen Compton, all of Davenport, Garmon Compton of Little River, TX and Ronald "Buck" Compton and wife, Sandra, of Lebanon; two daughters, Rita Kay Williams and husband, Keary, of Grundy and Norma Lou Compton of the home; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday in Honaker with the Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were grandsons and relatives.


Ella Mae Hagerman
(Jolo, WV)

  Ella Mae Church Hager-man, 61, of the Groundhog Hollow section of Jolo, WV, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 following an illness.
  Born in Whitewood, she was a daughter of the late Neute and Blanche White Church. She was a homemaker and in 1982 completed nurses training where she became a certified nursing assistant. She was employed by Buchanan General Hospital until 1989.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
  She is survived by her husband, William Hassel "Bill" Hagerman; daughters, Veronica Foley and husband, Joseph, of Paynesville, WV; and Drema Price and husband, Tommy, of Raysal, WV; one son, Randy Hagerman and wife, Laura, of Union, WV; one brother, Charles Church Jr. of Richlands; sisters, Pauline Layne of Hurley, Lorene Church of Jolo and Maude Pickle, Faye Church and Peggy Milonas, all of Bradhsaw; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Tuesday, May 30 at Family Worship Center in Jolo with the Revs. Pete Woods and Charles Rose officiating. Burial followed in the Tom Sparks Cemetery on Rock Ridge near Paynesville.
  Pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Ramesh Kabaria, Dr. M. Pillai, the staff of Virginia Oncology, and Clinch Valley Medical Center’s fifth floor nursing, respiratory, physical therapy and laboratory staff, staff of McDowell County Emergency Ambulance Authority and nursing staff of Access Home Health of Bluefield, WV.
  Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, WV was in charge of arrangements.


James Henry Vandyke
(Stopover, KY)

  James Henry Vandyke, 61, of Stopover, KY, died Monday, May 22, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Louemmie Vandyke. He was a coal miner.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, Angel Vandyke; one sister and several brothers.
  He is survived by his wife, Amie Coleman Vandyke; sons, James (Laura) Vandyke, Chester (Rebecca) Vandyke and Michael Vandyke, all of Stopover; brothers, Ray Vandyke of Jewell Ridge and Howard Vandyke of Tazewell; sisters, Mae Shortridge of Grundy, Marie Vandyke of Oakwood, Polly Harmon of Leesville, LA, Julie Vandyke of Tazewell and Emma Jean Whitt of Jewell Ridge; and two grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, May 26 at the Jamboree Church of God, Jamboree, KY, with the Rev. Willie Gordon officiating. Burial followed in the Vandyke Family Cemetery at Hurricane Creek, Stopover.

Madison H. Cabbell
(Martinsville, IN)

  Madison H. "Hoppy" Cab-bell, 62, of Martinsville, IN, formerly of Buchanan County, died May 22, 2006 in Indianapolis, IN following an automobile accident.
  Born in Grundy, he was the son of the late Eddie Cabbell and Lottie (Deel) Cabbell. He was a self-employed truck driver, a member of the Moose Lodge #1127 and Elks Lodge #1349, both of Martinsville and served in the Civil Air Patrol.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery W. Cabbell.
  He is survived by his wife, Marsha (Achors) Cabbell; two sons, Madison H. "Tiny" Cabbell of Martinsville and Thomas W. Cabbell of Mooresville, IN; three daughters, Lesa G. Duty of Grundy, Laura K. Wilson and Tonya K. Dagostino, both of Martinsville; three sisters, Rosie Catron of Paragon, IN, Esther Moorefield and June Bentley, both of Abingdon; and 14 grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday at Neal & Summers Mortuary in Martinsville with the Rev. Mark Wooley officiating. Burial followed in Kentucky Ridge Cemetery, Greene County, IN.

Dexter Gilbert
(Bee, VA)

  Dexter Gilbert, 62, of Bee, died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Edna Deel Gilbert. He was last employed as a coal miner and was of the Baptist faith.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie Gilbert; one son, Kevin Gilbert; one brother, Melvin Gilbert; and one sister, Juanita Rasnake.
  He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Lewis and Selina (Adrian) Holland, both of Centersville, OH; two sons, Randall Gilbert of Haysi and Chris (Wendy) Gilbert of Lebanon; three brothers, Danny and Carl Gilbert, both of Bee and Sammy Gilbert of Haysi; four sisters, Beatrice Winters of Christiansburg, Jerolene Howard and Linda Justice, both of Haysi and Mary Lou Duty of Bee; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
  Services were held Friday, May 26 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Mark Justice officiating. Burial followed in the Sutherland Cemetery at Bee.
  Pallbearers were nephews and friends.

Rita Lynn Mullins
(Virginia Beach, VA)

  Rita Lynn Mullins, 47, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Buchanan County, died May 22, 2006 at UVA Medical Center.
  Born in Grundy, she grew up at Breaks. She graduated as valedictorian of her class at Grundy High School and received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Medical College of Virginia. She began her nursing career at UVA Medical Center in Pediatrics and the Medical College of Virginia, later spending the next 23 years as a CCU nurse at Sentara Bayside Hospital.
  She is survived by her husband, Brae Legg; her parents, Shelbia and Jack Hylton of Breaks; two children, Tara and Alex; and one brother, JR.
  A celebration of her life was held Tuesday, May 30 at Haygood United Methodist Church where a reception followed in the adjacent main church building.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to the Arthritis Foundation.

James J. Hays

  James J. (Junior) Hays, 77, of Cedar Bluff, died Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
  Born in Ethel, WV, he was the son of the late John Reece Hay and Alice Bise. He was a retired truck driver for Banana Supply Company of West Palm Beach, FL.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Gaila Lynn Hays Osborne, several brothers and sisters.
  He is survived by his wife, Alice Pruett Hays; two daughters, Lisa and husband, David and Lesley Hall and husband, Michael; six grandchildren.
  A private service was held Sunday, May 21 at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
  Singleton Funeral Service, Cedar Bluff, was in charge of arrangements.
