Haysi Edges Grundy Girls, Honaker Boys to Win BDD Open Track and Field Meet

Haysi edged both the Grundy girls and the Honaker boys to earn wins in a BDD open track and field meet Wednesday at the Twin Valley Middle School track.
     The Lady Tigers claimed first place in just two individual events, but scored points in 14 of 15 events overall, capturing both the 400 (4x100) and 1600 (4x400) meter relays. Haysi (133 team points) topped Grundy (122) by 11 points.
     The Haysi boys (154-130) topped Honaker by 24 points in the final boys team standings.
      Toni Goodpaster captured the triple jump and Holly Hyden won the long jump for the Haysi Lady Tigers. Goodpaster placed in the top three in five events, earning seconds in the shot put and the 200 meter dash and placing third in both the 100 meters and the long jump.
      Hyden placed second in both the long jump and triple jump for the Lady Tigers. Twin Valley's Kaitlin Wimmer (100 and 200 meter dashes and the 300 meter hurdles) and Grundy's Tabitha Whited (800 and 3200 meter runs) were the only girls to win more than one individual event.
      Honaker's Jaimie McGlothlin won the 400 meter dash, ran second in the 100 and placed in six events overall. Teammate Amber Osborne won the high hurdles and took second in the 300 meter hurdles.

Twin Valley Splits Doubleheader With Phelps, Ky; Simpson Hits Grand Slam

      Hunter Simpson’s Grand Slam helped Twin Valley gain a split of a doubleheader with Phelps, Ky., Saturday at Twin Valley High School.
      The Panthers edged the Hornets, 14-13 in nine innings in game one, and dropped the second contest, 5-2 in five innings.
      Twin Valley sent the first game into extra innings with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Both teams scored a run in the seventh.
      The Panthers won in the ninth when Bo Hartmann singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error while attempting to steal third.
       Simpson’s home run keyed a five-run second inning, when the Panthers took a 7-0 lead.  Phelps scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, including seven in the fifth, to take a 12-9 lead.
       Hartmann reached base six times, stole a school-record six bases and scored a school-record six runs.  Simpson and Josh Smith each drove in four runs.
      Phelps jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second innings of the nightcap.  The Panthers committed nine errors in the twinbill, including five in game two.
