Edna Clevinger
(Hurley)

     Edna Vanover Clevinger, 93, of Hurley, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the home of her daughter following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late David L. and Florence Ester Vanover. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of Bull Creek Old Regular Baptist Church. She had been employed as a cafeteria worker at Hurley Elementary School.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Elver Clevinger, January 28, 2000; four sisters, four brothers and two grandsons.
      She is survived by four daughters, Clara Mae and husband, James Ras Fletcher of Vansant, Louise, and husband, Danny Brown, of Abingdon, Elva and husband, Earl Dotson of Princeton, WV and Florence Ellen Baker of Lexington, KY; four sons, James, and wife, Pauline Clevinger, Jerry, and wife, Janice Clevinger and Danny, and wife, Patsy Clevinger, all of Hurley and Doug and wife, Diana Clevinger, of Pounding Mill; one foster son, Burton Vanover, Jr. of Roanoke; two half-sisters, Nuval and husband, Bobby Jackson, of Hurley and Blanche Marrs of Grundy; 26 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
      Services were held Wednesday, May 7 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Howard Daniels officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
      Active pallbearers were grandsons.
      Honorary pallbearers were sons-in-law, Hospice Care of Princeton, Dr. Clint Sutherland and Dr. Chambers.
      Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Leisha Beth Charles
(Grundy)

      Leisha Beth Salyer Charles, 27, of Grundy, died Friday, May 2, 2008 in Columbus, OH.
       Born September 15, 1981, she was the daughter of William (Bill) and Mary Rife Salyer of Grundy. She was a graduate of Whitewood High School, attended Bluefield College and was a gifted artist and musician. She was a member of Buchanan First Presbyterian Church.
      She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John Astor and Carolyn Rife, and by her paternal grandparents, Jimmie and Avonelle Salyer.
        In addition to her parents, she is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Brooke Charles of Grundy; two sisters, Billie Joe Lopez of Albuquerque, NM and Cerella Ratliff of Richlands; one brother, Jimmie Allen Salyer of Grundy; several aunts and uncles.
       Services were held Tuesday, May 6 at Grundy Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Tittle officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum, Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
       Active pallbearers were deacons of Grundy Baptist Church.

Bessie Irene Vandyke
(Raven, VA)

     Bessie Irene Keene Vandyke, 70, of the Contrary section of Raven, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at her home following an extended illness.
     Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Squire William and Lillie C. Horn Keene. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Harbor of Life Worship Center and was a homemaker.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Mandy Keene, Pinkie Vandyke and Gracie Marie Keene; three brothers, Calvin Keene, Evans Sanbo Keene and Tommy Keene.
     She is survived by her husband, Franklin Vandyke; five children, Carroll and husband, Snook Smith, of Oakwood, Billy, and wife, Joy Vandyke, Bobby, and wife, Deana Vandyke and Rebecca Vandyke, all of Raven and Delmar and wife, Pam Vandyke of Pine Hall, NC; one special sister and brother-in-law, Gaynell and Donald Vandyke of Keen Mountain; two sisters, Minnie and husband, Roy Brown and Annie Meadows, all of Raven; two brothers, Perry Keene and S.W. Jr. and wife, Jean Keene, all of Raven; special brother-in-law and wife, Jimmy and Beulah Vandyke of Raven; seven grandchildren, Roy and Lizabeth Smith, Rachel and Jamie Meadows, Emily and T.J. Prater, Sgt. Robbie Vandyke, Lee Allen Vandyke, Brandon  Vandyke, Jeorgia Vandyke; three great-grandchildren, Kiera and Olivia Vandyke and Joshua Wade Smith; two step-grandsons and four step-great-grandchildren.
      Services were held Saturday, May 3 at Antioch Church on Keen Mountain with the Revs. Jack Ward and Troy Street officiating. Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery, Keen Mountain.
      Active pallbearers were her boys.
      Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


William Howard Hicks
(Jewell Valley, VA)

     William Howard Hicks, 75, of Jewell Valley, died  Saturday, May 3, 2008 in a Kingsport, TN hospital following a brief illness.
     Born in Jolo, WV, he was the son of the late Virgil and Bessie Grimm Hicks. He had lived and been employed in Ohio for many years, was a former employee of Ford Motor Company and had worked on a loading dock for Yellow Transit while in Ohio. He was a retired miner from Jewell  Smokeless #12A and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Amanda Carol Sutherland and Angela Dawn Hicks, and two brothers, Burl and Virgil Hicks.
      He is survived by one daughter, Carol Sutherland of Jewell Valley; one son, Danny Joe Hicks, of Jewell Valley; four sisters, Joann Day of Pea Patch, Ethel Cooper and Wanda Faye Sull, both of Berea, OH and Brenda Ramsey of North Royalton, OH; one half-sister, Edith Graybeal of Peterstown, WV; two brothers, Billy Ray Hicks of Hinkley, OH and Sherman Hicks of Avon, OH; three grandchildren, Amy Mullins, Jeanette Cumbee and Heather Davis; three great-grandchildren, Christopher Cumbee, Rayann Burkhart and Raven Burkhart.
      Services were held Tuesday, May 6 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Revs. Jimmie Cole, Billy Ray Hicks and Billy Ward officiating. Interment followed in the Gilbert-Day Cemetery on Bearwallow near Jewell Ridge.
     Pallbearers were Jaybird Cole, Roger Cole, Travis Cole, Larry Hicks, Cory Hicks, Daniel Jackson and Joshua Cole.
      Honorary pallbearers were Ronald Lee White, Eddie Day, Brad Ward and Troy Ward.
      Hurst-Scott Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Mary Elizabeth Wallace
(Honaker, VA)

      Mary Elizabeth Wallace, 94, of Honaker, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008 in a Richlands hospital.
       Born August 19, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Jonas and Mary Presley Rasnake. A lifelong resident of the Honaker area, she was a member of the Free Christian Church on Big A Mountain.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Henry Wallace; five sisters, Emily Nelson, Suzie Hayes, Rosa Skeens, Bertha Stevens and Gladys Wilson; and 12 brothers, Taze, Everettt, James, Taulbee, Elbert, Guy, Roy, Ted, Howard, Walter, Ellis and Syrus Rasnake.
     She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nova and Ferrell Whited, of Honaker; one son and daughter-in-law, C.H. and Carla Wallace, of Honaker; one sister, Eula McGuire of Bristol, VA; two grandsons, Aaron Whited and Tyler Whited, both of Honaker.
      Services were held Friday in Honaker with the Rev. Edward Tiller  and honorary minister, the Rev. Clyde Lambert, officiating. Interment followed in the Wallace Cemetery at Honaker.
      Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were grandsons and nephews.


Thelma Gay Hall
(Haysi, VA)

      Thelma Gay Hall, 75, of Haysi, died Sunday, May 4, 2008.
      Born September 22, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Stella Barton Woods.
      In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlis Yates; one infant daughter, Janice Yates; one step-daughter, Joyce Stacy; one step-son, Jerry Lee Yates; one brother, Boncile Woods; and four sisters, Draxie Woods, Zelphia Edwards, Helen Woods and Dorothy Woods.
     She is survived by her son, Johnny Mack (Carolyn) Yates; two daughters, Bernice (Lawson) Hall and Barbara (Kellis) Barton, both of Haysi; one step-son, Gene (Sharon) Yates of Oregon; three sisters, Gail Hall of Haysi, Betty Mullins of Clinchco and Ann Deel of Michigan; three brothers, Benford Woods, Billy Woods and Bobby Gene Woods, all of Clinchco; four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren.
      Services will be held today (Thursday), May 8 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Frank Newsome officiating. Burial will follow in the Rebecca Willis Cemetery at Haysi.
      Pallbearers will be Zachary Fuller, Dylan Fuller, Dwight Fuller, Kermit Charles, Joshua Charles, Scotty O'quinn, Matthew Hall, Joe Hall, Ben Hall, Billy Stacy and Tyler Stacy.
      Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Rual Fuller
(Haysi, VA)

      Rual Fuller, 75, of Haysi, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at Asbury Place in Johnson City, TN.
      Born in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Byrd and Martha McFadden Fuller. He was a U.S. Army veteran and while serving his country, was a personal guard to the Queen. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a businessman, coal operator, Country Club owner and was involved with various other enterprises. He was active in the Democrat party, was of the Presbyterian faith and a civic leader. He had made his home with his sister, Arlene, for the past several years.
      In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Buddie Fuller; one sister, Georgia Fuller; and one nephew, Timothy Byrd Fuller.
       He is survived by one son, Rual Jr. Fuller; three daughters, Martha Rualette, Melanie Ann Arlene and Kim Colley; two sisters, Arlene (Jerry) Deel of Haysi and Patsy (Michael) Phillips of Haysi; four brothers, Jack (Pearlie) Fuller and George Fuller, both of Haysi, Ervin (Jean) Fuller of Pounding Mill and Claudie Blanche Fuller of Abingdon; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
      Services were held Monday, May 5 at Haysi Funeral Home with Carlie Fuller, Clynard Belcher, John Whitner and Daniel Jarstfer officiating. Burial followed in the Fuller Cemetery at Haysi.
       Pallbearers were George Fuller, Robby Deel, Ricky Fuller, Garry Fuller, Chase Fuller, Carlie Fuller, Rockie Fuller, Dave Ratliff and Frank Sutherland.
      Honorary pallbearers were Casby O'quinn, Johnny Kelly, Ben Sutherland, Michael Phillips, Jerry Deel, Mike Harris, Bruce Sutherland, Keaton Sutherland, David Ratliff and H.C. Pratt.
      Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
