First
Battle of

Honaker was prepared for speed.
Whitney Compton gave them off-speed.
Compton tossed a two-hitter and Haysi stopped
Honaker,
2-0,
in
Black
Diamond
District
softball
action
Thursday
afternoon
at
Haysi
Kiwanis
Park.
Compton got all the run support she needed
from
senior
first
baseman
LaRae
Boyd,
who
drove
in
the
only
two
runs
of
the
game.
Compton
fanned
only
five,
but
striking
out
people
wasn’t
necessarily
the
game
plan
for
Haysi
(6-4,
2-0).
A hard-throwing, 6-foot-1 senior, Compton
used
a
series
of
off-speed
pitches
to
get
13
ground-ball
outs.
After
a
first-inning
triple
by
freshman
Paige
Tiller,
Honaker
(5-6,
0-1)
failed
to
get
the
ball
out
of
the
infield
the
rest
of
the
game.
“Honaker came in geared up for high-speed,
high-octane
stuff,”
Haysi
Coach
Darrol
Poston
said.
“But we ‘junked’ them to death. We wanted
to
pitch
them
differently
this
time
and
it
worked
pretty
well.”
Compton out-dueled Raeanne
Slate.
The
Honaker
ace
only
gave
up
four
hits.
The
senior
also
struck
out
five
batters
while
squaring
off
against
Compton
for
the
11th
or
12th
time
in
four
years.
“I think we’ve played (Haysi) maybe
12 or
13
times
the
past
four
years,
and
this
is
the
kind
of
game
you
usually
get,”
Honaker
Coach
Donovan
Helton
said.
“This
time
it
just
went
Haysi’s
way.
“This is what everyone expects.
This
is
what
everyone
comes
to
see.
(Haysi)
won
this
time
with
timely
hits,
and
that’s
something
we
didn’t
get.”
Boyd
collected
three
of
Haysi’s
four
hits
in
the
first
battle
of
Lady
Tigers
this
season.
She
tripled
home
Keisha
Bartley
in
the
second
and
singled
home
Candace
Sutherland
in
the
fourth.

Panthers
Turn Back
Rebels,
15-4 |
|
|
|
District wins have not come easily
the first five seasons for Twin
Valley. Victories under the 10-run
rule have been non-existent.
The Panthers picked up
both on Friday.
Twin Valley used nine walks and
six Hurley errors to hand the
Rebels a 15-4 setback in Black
Diamond District baseball action
Friday at Twin Valley.
A 13-run third inning
allowed winning pitcher Jeremiah
Lester to coast to the five-inning
win in a game shortened under the
10-run mercy rule. The senior
righthander struck out 12 and
walked three to earn his third
triumph in four decisions.
The Panthers got just
five hits, with all of them coming
in its 13-run rally. The key hits
in the inning were two-run singles
by Josh Crigger and Ethan Prater.
Hurley issued six of its
nine walks and committed half its
errors in the third. Twin Valley
(5-4, 1-2 BDD) added two runs in
the fourth without the benefit of
a base hit.
“Everybody’s
contributing,” Twin Valley Coach
Steve Hamro III said. “The key for
us, is we’re putting the ball in
play. Even when we aren’t getting
hits, we’re putting the ball in
play and making things happen.”
The Rebels took a
short-lived 1-0 lead in the top
half of the third and added three
runs in the fourth.
Shane Shelton (three hits) and
Justin Hall (two) combined for
five of Hurley’s six hits. Shelton
took the loss for the Rebels.
J.J. Matney reached base
four times and scored three runs
for the Panthers.
Twin Valley travels to Ervinton
for a non-district doubleheader
this afternoon (Thursday).
The Rebels travel to
Haysi for a BDD contest Friday.
