A
number of outstanding Grundy Golden Wave athletes
were
recognized, including Southwest District boys
basketball
Player of the Year Jimmy Ashby, at the
annual
Grundy Kiwanis Club sports banquet April
23 at
GHS.
A
number of awards were presented, including the 2007
Dewey
Varney football MVP award, which was presented
to
Ashby by former Grundy great and coaching legend
Smiley
Ratliff, a teammate of Varney’s at Grundy High
School
in the early 1940s.
Ashby
was named Golden Wave Player of the Year and was
given
a plaque in recognition of being an honorable mention
All-Group
AA selection at wide receiver and for making
first
team All-Southwest District and All-Region IV.
The
Coach's Award was presented to Jon Dotson and the
Most
Improved Lineman award went to Robbie Rife.
Most
Improved Running Back honors went to Josh Lindsay
and
senior lineman Andy Stiltner received the Mark Van
Meter
award, which is named for the former Golden Wave
great.
The
SWD regular season champion Grundy boys basketball
team
was recognized. The 6-foot-5 Ashby, who averaged
15.9
points, 17.8 rebounds, 5.5 blocks, four assists
and
three steals, was named team MVP and honored for
being
SWD Player of the Year and for earning All-Group
AA,
All-Region IV and All-SWD honors.
Bobby
Peck was given a plaque for earning All-SWD
honors
with his all-around play and, along with D.J.
Gelenster,
was recognized as Outstanding Defensive
Player.
Cody Billiter was named Outstanding Offensive
Player.

Lady
Wave Claims Easy Win in Open Track & Field Meet

Terri
Stacy, Holly Childress and Sarah Davis all
collected
key hits as Grundy pounded Graham, 10-4, in
Southwest
District softball action -Tuesday afternoon
at
Enoch’s Branch.
Stacy
and Childress each drove in two runs, while
Davis
contributed two this, two stolen bases and an
RBI
for Grundy (8-3, 1-3 SWD). The Lady Wave rallied
from a
3-1 deficit with five runs in the fourth inning
and
three more in the fifth.
“Sarah
Davis and Terri Stacy and Holly Childress,
those
three have been hitting the ball well for us,”
Grundy
coach Anthony Church said. “They’ve been our
clutch
hitters all year.”
Amber
Foster allowed just four hits overall and a
single
run in the final five innings to earn the win
for
the Lady Wave.
“Amber’s
putting ball over the plate and the defense
is
playing better,” Church said. “Sarah Davis is
playing
steady defense for us.
“Amber
did a good job. Graham had us down 3-1 there
(in
the second inning). They’ve improved a lot.”
Grundy
will host Carroll County in SWD play on Friday
afternoon.
