Rebels Pick Up Pair of Diamond Wins

Hurley picked up a pair of wins on the baseball diamond last week.
Clint Justus drove in the go-ahead run and Willie Burks drove in what turned out to be a key insurance run in the sixth as the Rebels edged Council, 7-6, in Black Diamond District baseball Thursday evening.
Gary Blankenship hit a grand slam and Hurley outslugged Phelps, Ky., 13-9, Wednesday afternoon at Hurley.
Justin Vandyke pitched out of several jams to aid the Rebel cause in Thursday's BDD win, the first district win of the season for the Rebels (5-9-2, 1-7). The sophomore righthander tossed a six-hitter and struck out nine, including two in the seventh, when the Cobras left the potential game-tying run on second base.
Burks, Vandyke and Jordan Prater each had two hits for Hurley. The Rebels got hits from seven different batters and took advantage of five Council errors.
Shane Presley had two hits for Council (3-12, 2-5). Shannon Breeding singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Presley to get the Cobas within 7-6 before Vandyke retired the final two batters.
Kegan Bostic struck out 12 while taking the loss, and drove in two runs without a hit for Council.

A seventh-inning rally by Grundy came up a run short as Graham edged the Golden Wave, 5-4, in Southwest District baseball action Friday evening at Enoch's Branch.
In non-district play last week, Cody Billiter slammed two towering home runs and threw a complete-game as Grundy drilled Council, 14-4, in non-district baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Willie Sullivan Field.
Billiter and Cody Cantrell each had two hits and drove in a run for Grundy, which trailed 3-1 going into the seventh inning.
The G-Men scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 5-1. Billiter and Cantrell started a three-run rally for Grundy in the bottom half of the inning.
Billter singled and scored on a double by Cantrell. Jeremy O'Quinn then singled to put runners on first and third.
A 4-3 grount out by Joseph Stephens scored Cantrell. O'Quinn eventually reached third base and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Michael Endicott to make it 5-4 with two outs.
"I thought we were going to get another runner on base with two outs," Grundy coach Scotty Bostic. "A Graham kid stumbled before he caught a fly ball to end the game. That's twice we've lost to Graham by one run.
