Staff Reporter
The
Buchanan County Litter Control Office awarded Hurley
Elementary/Middle School the Most Plastic Bags
Collected Countywide Award as part of the Buchanan
County Beautiful School Program.
The
award, which is sponsored by the Buchanan County
Litter Control and Recycling Office and Trex Inc. (a
company that manufactures plastic lumber made from
plastic bags), was given to Hurley Elementary/Middle
for collecting a total of 107,000 plastic bags.
Principal
Tim Prater said he was pleased with the efforts of all
the students throughout the school.
"I'm
proud of them," Prater said. "Our kids
always do well in these types of efforts."
Prater
said the students are always learning to give back to
the community and to help their environment through
causes such as the plastic bag collection.
Prater
also extended his gratitude to the parents of all the
students.
"I
would like to thank the parents," Prater said.
"We had a lot of parental support."
Instructor
Sean Dare's sixth grade homeroom collected a total of
3,100 plastic bags and will be awarded with a pizza
party. The school will be awarded with a picnic table
made by the plastic lumber manufactured by Trex, Inc.

DSS Board, Worker
Talks Scrapped Yet Again
|
|
by
Brandon Dye
Staff Reporter
Employee
issues and concerns hit another standstill, in front of another
large audience of employees, at the Buchanan County Department
of Social Services Administrative Board meeting on Monday night.
While
a closed session was planned to discuss personnel items with DSS
Foster Care Worker Rebecca Skeens Slone, it was ultimately
scrapped by Slone herself during the monthly meeting.
Under
the subject of old business, Slone was recognized by Knox
District board member and chairman Tolbert Prater to discuss
personnel matters in closed session. Board Attorney Vern Presley
told Prater that the board needed to designate if the board was
going into closed session for personnel reasons.
Before
a motion was made, Slone declined to go into closed session and
said she wanted a copy of the minutes of last month's meeting in
order to seek legal advice before the meeting. Slone said she
never received those minutes, which she requested from DSS
Director Judy Holland in writing.
Holland
said she mailed the minutes to her and had the certification
that they were sent.
"If
you didn't receive them, then that's an issue you'll have to
take up with the post office," Holland said to Slone.
