Emory
B. Horn
(Hurley)
Emory Birchfield Horn, 92, of Hurley, died Tuesday, May 6,
2008 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy,
following a brief illness.
Born
March 24, 1916 in Paynesville, WV, he was the son of the
late James Henry and Mary Lester Horn. He was a retired
water well driller and had spent most of his adult life in
construction in Buchanan County. He served his country as a
Navy Seebee in the 13th Battalion during World War II in the
Pacific arena. He was a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner of the
Kazim Temple in Roanoke. He was a member of the Odd Fellows,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and
American Legion. He was a member of Grundy Baptist Church
and attended Blackey Baptist Church for some 21 years. He
was an avid traveler and reader and was the last surviving
member of his immediate family.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
first wife, Helen Horn; three brothers, Alva, Miles and
Ballard Horn; six sisters, Linnie Kennedy, Sarah Kennedy,
Lora Horn, Ella Davis, Ida Joyce and Stella Lambert.
He
is survived by his wife, Edith Hughes Horn; two daughters,
Mrs. Charles Mack (Kay) Ratliff of Grundy and Gail Smith of
Roswell, GA; one granddaughter, Sarah Michelle Church of
Richmond; step-son, Gary Hughes, and wife, Pat, of Home
Creek; step-grandchildren, Brooke Owens and Trace Hughes;
several nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Friday, May 9 at Virginia Funeral Home Chapel with
the Revs. Ancil Childress and Willard Sturgeon and Evg. Mike
Rife officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley
Memorial Park, Big Rock. Military graveside rites were
conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
Pallbearers
were Trey Adkins, Jimmy Joyce, Jimmy Davis, Gary Hughes, Van
Davis, Tommy Joyce, J.D. Kennedy, Vaughn Horn, Roy Horn and
Jake Parsons.
Honorary
pallbearers were Elmo Kennedy, Austin Kennedy, Harold,
Hassel and Willard Horn, Trace Hughes, Jeff Scott, Sambo
Adkins and men of Blackey Baptist Church.

Hutchinson
(Grundy)
Omie McClanahan Hutchinson, 89, of Grundy, died Thursday,
May 8, 2008 at Wexford House in Kingsport, TN, following an
extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac
and Polly Coleman McClanahan. She was a lifelong resident of
Buchanan County, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints and was a homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Edgar (Junior) Benton Hutchinson, Jr.; three
sisters, Lillie St. Clair, Georgia Fraley and Pauline
Coleman.
She
is survived by three daughters, Margaret Hutchinson of the
home, Juanita Bond of Greenback, TN and Alice Roberson and
Bill of Cheltenham, MD; two sons, Edgar (Eddie) Benton
Hutchinson III and Gary Hutchinson and Tammy, all of
Buchanan County; one brother, Cecil McClanahan and Betty of
Oakwood; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Monday, May 12 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with
President Michael McClure and Evg. Mike Rife officiating.
Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active
pallbearers were family and friends.
Grundy

Edward Keen
(Rowe)
Joshua Edward Keen, 14, of Rowe, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008
at his home.
Born
June 6, 1993 in Abingdon, he was a son of Eddie and Tammy
Lester Keen of Rowe. A lifelong resident of Rowe, he was a
member of Oakwood Full Gospel Chuch. He was currently an
eighth grade student at Twin Valley High School and a member
of the Buchanan Basketball Foundation.
He
was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Chester
and Lorene Lester; his paternal grandmother, Diana Keen; and
one uncle, Les "Scrooge" Coleman.
In
addition to his parents, he us survived by one brother,
Chance Keen of the home; paternal grandfather, Cleve Keen
and wife, Sadie, of Oakwood; paternal great-grandmother,
Melda Coleman of Honaker; aunts and uncles, Debbie and Randy
Lester, Bobby and Tina Lester and Jeff and Vanessa Lester,
all of Rowe, Phyllis and James Cassell of Bedford, Tim and
Nancy Keen and Lisa and Foxy Reynolds, all of Honaker, and
Ronda and Michael Stevens of Swords Creek; cousins,
Jeremiah, Katie Joe, Zachary, Kari, Kayla, Samuel, Justin,
Whitney and Brittany.
Services
were held Friday at Honaker with the Revs. Jerry Harman and
Ancil Childress officiating. Interment followed in the
Street Cemetery at Rowe.
Pallbearers
were Jeremiah Lester, Zachary Cassell, Lucas Shortridge,
Brandon Viars, Hunter Simpson, Josh Smith, Katie Jo Lester
and Kari Cassell.
Honorary
pallbearers were Robert Simpson, Richard Smith and Buchanan
Basketball Foundation team; Dr. Eric Goss, Liz Justus and
Dr. Patel.

Estel
Looney
(Grundy)
Estel Looney, 88, of Grundy, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at
his home following an extended illness.
Born
October 1, 1919 in Skeggs, he was the son of the late Daniel
and Ella Mae Street Looney. He was a coal miner for Red
Jacket Coal Company, Clinchfield Coal Company and retired
from Island Creek Coal Company, VP1. He served in World War
II with the U.S. Army in Normandy, France and was decorated
with the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern
Service Ribbon, American Defense Medal, American Theater
Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and was
honorably discharged November 5, 1945 with the rank of Staff
Sergeant. He was a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the
American Legion and the UMWA. He was the last surviving
member of his immediate family.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Virginia Stiltner Looney, July 21, 1998; two brothers,
Eules and Elmer Looney; and one grandson, Donald Brian
Looney.
He
is survived by one daughter, Rhonda Looney Cox and husband,
Bradley, of Grundy; sons, Estel "Tommy" Looney and
wife, Phyllis, of Oakwood and Donald "Duck" Looney
of Ramseur, NC and Kathy Looney of Richlands; five
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Saturday, May 10 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral
Chapel in Grundy with Jerry Edwards, Arvil Arwood and
Raffael Farrow officiating. Interment followed in Greenhills
Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill. John Ratliff Post 164 of the
American Legion conducted graveside rites.
Pallbearers
were Shawn Looney, Josh Evans, Brad Looney, Jeff Looney,
Anthony Looney and Jarred Looney.
Honorary
pallbearers were Rusty Moss, Jerry Edwards, Raffael Farrow,

Ira Shortridge
(Cedar Bluff, VA)
William Ira "Big Show" Shortridge, 38, of Cedar
Bluff, died Friday, May 9, 2008 in a Johnson City, TN
hospital.
Born
November 2, 1969 in Richlands, he was a son of Garlon and
Carolyn Helton Shortridge of Glade Springs. He had spent
most of his life in the area and was of the Methodist
faith. He was a 1987 graduate of Garden High School and a
member of the Masonic Lodge in Blacksburg, SC. He was
currently employed by XMV Mining in West Virginia.
He
was preceded in death by one brother, Steve
"Look-Away" Shortridge.
In
addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lisa
Shortridge; children, Stephanie Kay, Danielle Marie and
Derek Ray, all of the home; one brother, Daniel Shortridge,
and wife, Ada, of Louisville, KY; two nephews, Devan and
Nathan; one niece, Maegan; several aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Services
were held Monday at Honaker with the Revs. Arvil Arwood
and Lee Blackburn officiating. Interment followed in
Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
Pallbearers
were Shane Browning, Bud Collins, Kenny Proffitt, Marty
Stiltner, Kevin Shortridge, Nick Shortridge and Elijah
Helton.

Arvil
Quinley Jr.
(Rural Retreat, VA)
Arvil Quinley, Jr., 60, of Rural Retreat, formerly of
Buchanan County, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at his home
following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of Lennie Viola Ratliff
Quinley of Rt. 4, Grundy and the late Arvil Lewis Quinley.
He was a resident of Buchanan County several years and had
resided in Rural Retreat for the past 19 years. He was a
member of Deliverance Tabernacle at Patterson and was a
disabled coal miner and former employee of Jewell
Smokeless Coal and Coke Corporation.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Evelyn Blankenship, and two brothers, Ralph and
Bailey Quinley.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Connie
Deel Quinley; two daughters, Teresa and husband, Jerry
Church and Cindy and husband, Joe McMillan, all of Rural
Retreat; three sons, Arvil and wife, Betsy Quinley of
Hurley, Jackie Quinley and Tony and wife, Charlotte
Quinley, all of Rural Retreat; one sister, Geraldine and
husband, Acie Blankenship of Rt. 4, Grundy; one brother,
Earnest and wife, Fern Quinley, of Grundy; eight
grandchildren.
Services
were held Saturday, May 10 at Deliverance Tabernacle with
Evgs. Billy Vandyke, Tommy Deel and Jerry Matney
officiating. Burial followed in the Quinley Family
Cemetery near the home at Rural Retreat.

Timmy Ray Horn, 36, of Spring Hill, FL, died Sunday, May
4, 2008.
Born
in Tazewell, he moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1985. He
was a supervisor for NEC Keystone Inc. and attended the
Land O' Lakes Church of God.
He
was preceded in death by his father, Jessie Horn;
grandparents, Cam and Nancy Horn and William and Dicey
Duty of Grundy.
He
is survived by his mother, Judy Horn, of Spring Hill;
longtime girlfriend, Stephanie; son, Nicholas; three
brothers, Terry and wife, Flora Horn, Kevin Horn and
Luther Horn; eight sisters, Charlene and husband, Mark
Diaz, Marlene Horn, Joyce Sharp, Regina Horn, Christina
and husband, Anthony Owen, Darniece Adkins, Darlene
Grisley, Nancy Horn; several aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Services
will be held Friday, May 16 at the Land O' Lakes Church of
God.

Margaret Ann Moore Thomas, 58, of White Pine, TN, formerly
of Oakwood, died Sunday, May 11, 2008, in Clinch Valley
Medical Center, Richlands.
Born
in Tazewell County, June 16, 1949, she was the daughter of
Ocie Mae Shell Moore, of Oakwood and James Farley Moore.
She was of the Church of Christ faith.
In
addition to her father, she was preceded in death by one
sister, Sue McConnell and three brothers, Benny, Terry and
James Moore.
In
addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband,
Eddie G. Thomas; one daughter, Carma Thomas and husband
Tony, of Dandridge, TN; one son, Eddie Thomas and wife
Brooke, of Dandridge; one sister, Lois Jean Doan, of
Atwater, OH; two brothers, Robert Moore, of Oakwood and
Billy Moore, of Akron, OH; three grandchildren, Taylor
Thomas, Zachary Thomas and Landon Thomas.
Services
were held Tuesday, May 13 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home
Chapel with Evg. Kermit Calhoun and Minister Lois Ann Null
officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens,
Claypool Hill.

Beulah B. Mullins, 88, of Johnson City, TN, formerly of
Blountville, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Johnson City
Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born
in Grundy, she lived in Blountville for 50 years, where
she and her husband, Paul, owned and operated Mullins Auto
Supply, Inc.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora
Ratliff; her husband, Paul Mullins; grandson, Blake
Tackett; and eight brothers and sisters.
She
is survived by two daughters, June Premo and husband,
Paul, of Johnson City and Carole Tacket and husband, Jim,
of Blountville; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hollon and
husband, Mike, of Maryville, TN, Bill Kilgore, III, of
Maryville, Jimmy Tackett and wife, Sharon, of Kingsport,
TN, and Cyndi Tackett, of Atlanta, GA; three
great-grandchildren, Emily Hollon, Bill Kilgore IV and Ali
Kilgore; one great-great grandson, Brandon Hager; several
step-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Ratliff and
husband, Reual, of Grundy; several nieces and nephews.

interment was held Thursday, May 15 at Tri-Cities Memory
Gardens.

E.L. Shortt, 62, of Shortt Gap, died Friday, May 2, 2008,
near his home.
Born
December 12, 1945, in Buchanan County, he was the son of
the late Rev. Edward
and Stella Addison Shortt. During his life, he worked as a
coal miner and a maintenance engineer at a variety of
locations.
He
is survived by his wife, Polly Shortt; two step-daughters,
Freda Hale and husband, Jamie, and Renee Large and
husband, R.L.; two step-sons, Lail Deel and wife, Amanda,
and Tracy Deel and companion, Bonnie Kelley; one
step-granddaughter, Ashley Hale; five brothers, Raleigh
Don Shortt and wife Billie, Wendell Shortt and wife,
Patsy, of Shortt Gap, Frank Shortt and wife Sharon, of San
Jose, CA, Charles Randall Shortt and wife Teresa, of
Christiansburg and Bobby Shortt and wife Patricia, of
Johnson City; four sisters, Francis Shortt Butcher and
