President Takes Time to Check Out Paper

by JoBeth Wampler

For one former Buchanan County resident, his strong ties to his hometown earned him a once in a lifetime experience with the President of the United States.
Danny G. Mullins, who currently resides in Norton, said it was the unique circumstances through which he found himself standing side by side with President George W. Bush, former President George H.W. Bush and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush that made the meeting even more special.
In April, Bush hosted a barbecue supper at his Crawford, Texas ranch, honoring some of the Republican Party's biggest supporters.
Of the approximately 500 attendees the barbecue drew, according to some reports, Wise County native Thelma White was also invited to attend.
Knowing she could bring one guest, White chose Mullins.
And, while Mullins prepared for his trip to Texas, he said he received a copy of the Virginia Mountaineer in the mail just before the event.
The April 3, 2008 edition of the Mountaineer contained a feature article, penned by staff reporter JoBeth Wampler, about eight-year-old Hayley Davis.
Davis wrote to the President during her Christmas break in 2007 while visiting her grandparents, Richard and Debby Ward, of Slate Creek.
Around three months later, she received a response.
"When I got that paper, I thought it was great that a little girl would be recognized by the President of the United States," Mullins said.

Funds Secured for Convict Hollow Sewer Project

by Scotty Wampler

Over a half million in grant funds were allocated recently for the Convict Hollow sewerline extension project.
Governor Tim Kaine released $550,000 from the state's Southern Rivers Watershed Enhancement Program fund for the project. In January, the board of supervisors submitted a grant application for monies for water and sewer improvements at Convict Hollow (Rt. 601).
“The Southern Rivers Watershed Enhancement Program addresses not only the environmental impact of untreated runoff into Virginia’s ground water and streams," Kaine said in announcing the funds, "but also addresses the quality of life for Virginians who benefit through access to clean and safe water, and the expansion of wastewater treatment and collection systems.”
The county will provide public wastewater service to 25 households that are currently using individual septic systems because of the grant funds, many of which are failing to meet local permit requirements. Recent testing indicates that 57 percent of the local water supplies in the area are contaminated with coliform and have fecal coliform present, and this project is expected to stop further contamination. As a result of the project, 6,500 linear feet of eight-inch sewer line, 1,250 linear feet of four-inch sewer line and 2,500 linear feet of four-inch sewer line will be installed.
