Kevin Viers set a school
record for threes in high school.
Now he’s headed for a
college program that’s setting all kinds of three-point records.
The Haysi senior signed a
letter-of-intent Monday to play college basketball at Emory & Henry College.
It’s a marriage made in
basketball heaven. Viers, who finished with a school-record 227 three-pointers
during a stellar four-year career for the Tigers, playing for veteran coach Bob
Johnson, who the past couple of years has employed a wide-open style that
includes dozens of three-point attempts per game.
“It’s a perfect fit,’
says Haysi Coach Dave Sutherland, who has coached Viers the past four seasons.
“Coach Johnson has shown an interest in Kevin playing at Emory since he first
went to camp with us there when he was a freshman.”
Viers, who will graduate
from Haysi with a 3.85 GPA, is more than just an outstanding three-point
shooter.
A four-year regular at
the point, the 6-foot Viers scored 1,414 points and was a three-time All-BDD and
two-time All-Region D player.
As a senior, Viers
averaged 18.8 points, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals and set a single-season school
record with 81 threes.
“Coach Johnson said (81
threes) would have been second on the team this year at Emory,” Sutherland
added. “It really turned out to be the perfect fit for Kevin and for Emory &
Henry.
“He’s perfect for
their style, what coach Johnson calls the ‘run-and-fun’. Kevin likes coach
Johnson and he’s gotten close to (E & H assistant) Coach Jamion Christian.”
Viers, Sutherland
says, has the option to play baseball as well as basketball for the NCAA
Division III school.
