Pastorek Couple Wins 5K Run
Allison Pastorek Sets New Course Record Among Females

The field of runners was smaller than usual, but it didn’t slow down the competitors who did show up for the 27th annual Grundy Kiwanis 5K Run/Walk event Saturday morning in downtown Grundy.
A number of other events taking place in the area, including a couple of well-attended track meets, left only about two dozen runners and walkers vying for top prizes in many different age categories in this year’s event.
The husband-wife duo of Steve and Allison Pastorek, of Jonesborough, TN, blistered the field in their respective male and female divisions to win the overall titles with Allison setting a new course event record for the females.
Steve ran the 3.1 mile course in a time of 17:41, a tick slower than last year‘s winning time of 17:30, to capture the overall male winner’s trophy.
Allison, a past winner of the race, turned in an impressive and record-setting time of 20:21, somewhat faster than last year’s winning time of 20:37, to capture the top overall female trophy. Last year’s winner, Adome Hailemariam of Mountain Mission School, held the course record prior to Allison’s run on Saturday.
Each winner received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond and trophy.
Also, special trophies and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds were awarded to winners in the Master’s Division — those runners 40 years of age and older with the fastest times.
The top male finisher in the Master’s Division was Phillip VanDyke of Grundy, turning in a time of 20:11, and the top female finisher in the Master’s Division was Debby Stollings of Mosheim, TN, with a time of 26:27.
In the male 14-and-under age division, Adulaen Zewedu of Mountain Mission, captured the top prize with a time of 19:43. Buck Ratliff of Vansant, came in second in the division with a time of 34:11.
In the male 15-19 division, Bryan Fields of Grundy, took first place with his time of 33:03.
In the male 30-34 division, Michael Davis of Abingdon, captured first place with his time of 23:58.
Scott Butcher of Richlands finished second with a time of 24:30 and Jerry Nesamony of Grundy, came in third with a time of 34:29.
Ricky Owens of Grundy, won first place in the male 40-44 age division.
Randy Fletcher of Grundy, captured top honors in the male 45-49 age division with a time of 22:02, while Terry Campbell of Bakersville, NC, finished second with a time of 22:23. Ron Phillips of Clintwood, came in third with a time of 23:35.

Haysi's Viers Inks Letter-of-Intent With Emory & Henry College

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Kevin Viers set a school record for threes in high school.
Now he’s headed for a college program that’s setting all kinds of three-point records.
The Haysi senior signed a letter-of-intent Monday to play college basketball at Emory & Henry College.
It’s a marriage made in basketball heaven. Viers, who finished with a school-record 227 three-pointers during a stellar four-year career for the Tigers, playing for veteran coach Bob Johnson, who the past couple of years has employed a wide-open style that includes dozens of three-point attempts per game.
“It’s a perfect fit,’ says Haysi Coach Dave Sutherland, who has coached Viers the past four seasons. “Coach Johnson has shown an interest in Kevin playing at Emory since he first went to camp with us there when he was a freshman.”
Viers, who will graduate from Haysi with a 3.85 GPA, is more than just an outstanding three-point shooter.
          A four-year regular at the point, the 6-foot Viers scored 1,414 points and was a three-time All-BDD and two-time All-Region D player.
As a senior, Viers averaged 18.8 points, 3.2 assists and 1.4 steals and set a single-season school record with 81 threes.
“Coach Johnson said (81 threes) would have been second on the team this year at Emory,” Sutherland added. “It really turned out to be the perfect fit for Kevin and for Emory & Henry.
“He’s perfect for their style, what coach Johnson calls the ‘run-and-fun’. Kevin likes coach Johnson and he’s gotten close to (E & H assistant) Coach Jamion Christian.”
Viers, Sutherland says, has the option to play baseball as well as basketball for the NCAA Division III school.

Cobras Explode to Post 11-1 Win Over Rebels

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Good things came in threes for Council in its third win of the season Tuesday.
Three late rallies, including a six-run fourth and a four-run fifth helped allowed the Cobras to go home early after an 11-1, five-inning Black Diamond District victory over Hurley Tuesday afternoon (May 2) at Willie Sullivan Field.
Samantha Breeding and Daniel Lester each drove in three runs and Cody Jackson scored the game-winning run for the third time for Council (3-11, 1-3 BDD).
Lester drove in a run in all three Cobra rallies.
The senior catcher drove in the first Council run with an RBI single in the third, capped off a six-run rally with a sacrifice fly as the Cobras built a 7-0 lead in the fourth.
Lester’s RBI ground out scored Jackson with the clincher in the fifth, when the contest was called under the 10-run mercy rule.
Breeding lined a two-run double to right in the fourth and added an RBI single in the fifth. Both Jackson and Justin Helton had two hits for the Cobras.
Natasha Wilson and Wade Jackson each singled and scored two runs, while Corey Barton was hit twice, walked and scored two runs for Council.
Winning pitcher Kegan Bostic went the distance. The sophomore righthander allowed just three hits and struck out six.
Josh Childress was 2-of-3 and scored on an RBI single by Shane Shelton in the fifth for Hurley.
Shelton took the loss for the Rebels.
Council hosts Haysi on Friday and Hurley hosts Twin Valley on Tuesday in BDD play.

A hair-raising main event will headline All-Star Wrestling Friday night as several local superstars visit Hurley Elementary/Middle School.
Stan “The Man” Lee will challenge former ECW and Smoky Mountain Wrestling star Tracy Smothers for the heavyweight title, with an odd stipulation in place.

Also on the card, tag-team champions the Brothers in Faith will put their belts on the line against the Drillers.
Bringing an extra dose of local flavor to the event, Buchanan County’s own “Bullet” Bill Crigger and Lorelei the Dixie Delite will join forces in mixed tag-team action against “Foxy Lady” Lexie Fyfe and the Masked Superstar.
Others scheduled to appear include the Tex-Mex Connection and John Noble.
Tickets for the school fundraiser are $6 in advance for general admission, and $7 the night of the event.
Student general admission is $5 (no advance discount). Children under five are admitted free.
Advance tickets are available at the school. For more information, call (276) 566-8523.  Bell time is 7:30 p.m.
