Panthers
Edge Wave
in
Thriller,
10-7 |
|
by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter
One senior got things
started and another finished strong.
In between a pair
of freshmen led the way for Twin Valley.
Freshmen Hunter Simpson and
Ethan Prater delivered key hits as the Panthers edged Buchanan County rival
Grundy, 10-7, in non-district action Thursday evening at Twin Valley.
It was the third win in
five starts for Twin Valley (3-1-1). The Panthers edged Ervinton, 5-3, in a
non-district game last Tuesday (March 28) at TVHS.
Thursday ’s contest was
called in the middle of the sixth inning due to darkness.
Simpson and seniors J.J.
Matney and Jeremiah Lester, were involved in three of the Panthers’ four scoring
rallies. Prater added a game-tying, pinch-hit double in the fourth and later
scored to give his club a 7-6 lead as Twin Valley erased a deficit for the third
and final time.
“It’s good to see
our freshmen come through,” first-year Twin Valley Coach Steve Hamro III said.
“Hunter came up
with some big hits and Ethan’s double
really helped us out.”
Making like the
quintessential leadoff man, Matney walked and scored three times and stole four
bases. He started rallies in the first and second innings and again in the
decisive fifth, when Simpson delivered the only hit in a three-run rally that
snapped a 7-7 tie.
“J.J. Matney got us
going,” Hamro added. “He did what a good leadoff man is supposed to do. He got
on base all three times he came to the plate.”
Simpson finished 2-for-4, with
two singles plus a shot through the shortstop’s legs and a sharply-hit ball to
third. Lester, who tossed a three-hitter for the win, singled, doubled, walked
and scored twice.
Grundy (0-4) started off
well, taking a 2-0 lead two batters into the game after Kevin Vandyke walked and
sophomore catcher Cody Billiter blasted a home run to right.
Billiter
drove in three runs, but the Golden Wave struggled after turning two walks and a
pair of Twin Valley errors into two runs and a 6-5 lead in the third. In that
inning, Grundy had two base runners thrown out and got precious few
opportunities the rest of the way.
