Algie K. Stiltner
(Grundy)

  Algie K. Stiltner, 84, of Grundy, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital, Bristol, TN, following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John McKinley and Melissa Violet Coleman Stiltner. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, attended Mountain Mission School, was a member of Little Freedom Old Regular Baptist Church and a retired coal miner. He was inducted into the United States Army on November 9, 1942, serving in the battles and campaigns at Bismark Archipelago, South Philippines, Luzon and New Guinea, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal and was wounded in action at Luzon on March 9, 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Army, October 30, 1945. He re-enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 where he served for four years and during the Korean Conflict.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kansada Stiltner; his second wife, Nina Mae Wilkinson Stiltner; who died May 22, 2004; three sons, Matthew Stiltner, Mark Stiltner and Algie Paul Stiltner; and one brother, John Verlin Stiltner.
  He is survived by four daughters, Linda Ann and husband, Willie Mayhorn, Virgie Mae Stiltner, Bernice Faye Stiltner and Mildred Charliece Stiltner, all of Grundy; three sons, Anthony Charles Stiltner, John Marlin Stiltner and David Luke Stiltner, all of Grundy; three brothers, Pleas Stiltner of Grundy, Samuel Paul Stiltner of Cloverdale and Andrew Franklin Stiltner of Keystone, IN; three sisters, Faye Deel of Grundy, Mae Barr of Abingdon and Nancie Stiltner of Bradenton, FL; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, April 2 at Little Freedom Old Regular Baptist Church on Deskins near Vansant with Elders Jackie Church and Jerry Matney officiating. Burial followed in the Stiltner Family Cemetery on Dave Branch in Grundy. Full military rites were conducted at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion.
  Active pallbearers were Anthony Mayhorn, Eric May-horn, Sammy Mayhorn, Derek Mayhorn, Billy Justus, Chris Riddle, Darrell Stiltner, Mark Stiltner, Donnie Stiltner and Leonard Mayhorn.
  Honorary pallbearers were Pleas Stiltner, Buster Stiltner, Steve Riddle, Tommy Riddle, Winfield (Hoot) Dellinger Jr., Jimmy Smith, Henry Farmer, Willie Mayhorn, Dr. J.N. Patel, Jack Buchanan, Johnny Belcher and Robert Smith.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Charles Edward Neal
(Patterson)

  Charles Edward (Chuck) Neal, 61, of Patterson, died Tuesday, March 28, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Clay, WV, he was a son of the late Roscoe Delbert Neal and Frances Lennie Keffer Hilberbrand. He had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a disabled auto mechanic. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict and was a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Woody and Johnny Hilberbrand.
  He is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Neal of Cleveland, OH and Angela Lowe of Richlands; one son, Charles Edward Neal, Jr. of Richlands; three half-sisters, Linda Neal and Loretta Neal, both of New York and Lorraine Buckner of West Virginia; eight half-brothers, James Neal, Doudley Neal, Andrew Neal, Scotty Neal and Teddy Neal, all of West Virginia, Rex Neal, Don Neal and Robert Neal, all of New York; five grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, March 31 at Deliverance Tabernacle Church at Patterson with the Revs. Andrew Blankenship and Jerry Matney officiating. Burial followed in the Matney Cemetery at Patterson. Full military rites were held at the cemetery by members of John Ratliff Post No. 164.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Maxine Mahon Stevens
(Grundy)

  Maxine Mahon Stevens, 72, of Grundy, died Friday, March 31, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Matewan, WV, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Georgia Ann Hatfield Mahon. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life, a member of Little Prater Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton W. Stevens, March 20, 1988; one half-sister, Edna Cisco; two brothers, Early and Acie Mahon; and two grandchildren, Roy S. Rowe and Jessica R. Edwards.
  She is survived by six daughters, Janice Edwards of Vansant; Georgia Ann and husband, Steve Stiltner of Rt. 2, Grundy, Hazel and husband, Steve Riddle of Grundy, Sharon and husband, Roy Rowe of Darlington, SC, Pearl and husband, David Oliver of St. Petersburg, FL and Mary Stevens of Blacksburg; one son, Clayton "Buck" Stevens of Grundy; three sisters, Bertha B. Perry of Saltville, Gertrude Daniels of Majestic, KY and Polly Jessie of Ordway, CO; one brother, Pliant Mahon of Matewan, WV; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Monday, April 3 at Little Prater Church of Christ with Evgs. Michael Trent and Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in the Frank E. Stiltner Cemetery on Poplar Creek.
  Active pallbearers were Tommy Riddle, Doug Yates, Ardell Hibbitts, Ryan Mullins, Darrell Stiltner, Dean Glover, Jim Coleman, Stewart Stiltner, Daniel Stiltner and Chris Stiltner.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. J.G. Patel, Troy Compton, Jimmy Smith, David Hardin, Timmy Smith, Pleas Stiltner, Gary Barton, Roger Coleman, Pete Keen, Todd Browning, Willie Browning, Tom Mahon, Arthur Mahon, Elders and deacons of Little Prater Church of Christ.

Sherman H. O’Quinn
(Dismal)

  Sherman Harold (Stubbo) O’Quinn, 56, of the Dismal section of Buchanan County, died Sunday, April 2, 2006.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of E.E. (Red) O’Quinn of Jolo, WV and the late Draxie Mullins O’Quinn. He was a 1969 graduate of Iaeger High School, a retired coal miner, having last worked for Island Creek Coal Co. VP#1, served as the Union President and Safety Man of Local Union 1509 and spent many years fighting for mining safety, working conditions, retired miners and widows benefits.
  In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one niece and one nephew.
  In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Alice Carol Baker O’Quinn; two daughters, Pam Coleman and husband, Paul, Jennifer McNeil and husband, Bobby, all of Dismal; one son, Tim O’Quinn and wife, Joy, of Hobb’s Branch; three brothers, Larry O’Quinn and Gary O’Quinn, both of Jolo, and Danny O’Quinn of Atwell, WV; one sister, Sharlene McIntosh of Bradshaw, WV; and four grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, April 5 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy, with the Rev. Wade McGeorge, Evg. Mike Rife, Tim Herring, Elder Brian Moore and Sister Beulah Shortridge officiating. Burial followed in the O’Quinn Family Cemetery at Jolo.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were men of Christ Fellowship Church, men of Local Union 1509, Dr. Ramon Motos, Louise Silcox, Dr. J. Piriz, staff of The Clinic, nursing staff of Clinch Valley Medical Center, Ronnie and Betty Compton, entire staff of Virginia Medical and Respiratory, Ron Moore, Rick Collins, Jr. Cook, brothers-in-law and Otis Meadows.

Gay Ola Deel
(Grundy)

  Gay Ola Willis Deel, 79, of the Deel fork section of Buchanan County, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Hospital, Bristol, TN, following an extended illness.
  Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Cain and Sissie Owens Willis. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years and was a member of Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 1. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison Deel, October 6, 1998; and one sister.
  She is survived by two daughters, Marshell and husband, Billy Clevinger and Linda and husband, Holly Branham, both of Grundy; two sons, Bobby Harrison and wife, Lillie Deel of Grundy, Blake Deel and fiance’, Mary Looney of Breaks; three sisters, Nell Edwards of Haysi, Judy Bernhoft of Nesbit, MS and Helen Wagner of Rainelle, WV; one brother, Frank Willis of Bristol, TN; three grandsons and one step-grandson.
  Services were held Wednesday, April 5 at Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church No. 1 on Poplar Creek with Elders Billy Campbell and Charles Paul McClanahan officiating. Burial followed in the Hoppy Deel Cemetery on Deel Fork near Harman.
  Active pallbearers were Bobby Harrison Deel, Jr., Derick Adam Deel, Joseph Wayne Deel, Tanner Billiter, Billy Owens, Kenny McClana-han, Chuck Crabtree, Barney Stiltner, Jerry Clevinger and Roy Rasnick.

Elmer Trinkle Breeding
(Davenport)

  Elmer Trinkle Breeding, 72, of Davenport, died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Eulis and Helen Keele Breeding. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a retired coal miner, member of the UMWA, and a member of Breeding Primitive Baptist Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford Breeding and Harold Breeding, and two sisters, Sandra Sue Bostic and Linda Lou Breeding.
  He is survived by his wife, Marlene Rasnake Breeding; two sons, Tim (Mary) Breeding of Harrogate, England and Jim (Regina) Breeding of Stoneville, NC; one daughter, Rhonda (Tim) Ray of Vansant; two sisters, Ann Jackson of Davenport and Sheila Fletcher of Vansant; four brothers, Larry Breeding of Vansant, Victor Breeding and Kenny Breeding, both of Davenport and Clair Breeding of Michigan; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Wednesday at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Jim Duty and Bob Arrington officiating. Burial followed in Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon.
  Pallbearers were nephews.

Dewey L. Davis
(Slate Creek)

  Dewey L. Davis, 72, of the Slate Creek section of Buchanan County, died Monday, April 3, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late William Matthew and Myrtle Stiltner Davis. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant sister, Joyce Ann Davis; and one brother, William Matthew Davis, Jr.
  He is survived by five sisters, Jeanette and husband, Carl Brewster of Pilgrim’s Knob, Shirley Keene and Loretta and husband, Lawrence Dawson, both of Grundy, Mell and husband, Junior Church of Maryland and Ruby Beebe of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; one brother, Ray E. and wife, Faye Davis of Grundy; one sister-in-law, Gearlene Davis of Grundy; several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), April 6 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Harold Thornsbury, Don Ashby and E.C. Honaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Davis Cemetery on Davis Ridge at Paynesville, WV.
  Active pallbearers will be Jerry Brewster, Tommy Brewster, Gene Crouse, Gary Dawson, Greg Dawson and Keith Keene.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Denny Keene, Victor Mullins, Dr. H. Patel, Dr. D. Patel, Styles Justus, Ken Stiltner, Robert Kelly, Devon Kelly, Juan Mullins, Steve Stacy, Willie Keen, Heritage Hall staff and "B" Wing employees.

James Bryan West
(Abingdon, VA)

  James Bryan West, 67, of Abingdon, died Friday, March 31, 2006 in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, TN.
  Born in Pittsfield, MA, he was a son of Stewart B. West of Abingdon and the late Mattie Swoop West. He had been a resident of the Abingdon area several years and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Columbia.
  In addition to his father, he is survived by his step-mother, Georgia Robair West of Abingdon; and his care-takers, Michael and Melissa Blankenship and McKenzie Blankenship, all of Hurley.
  Services were held Saturday, April 8 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Wylie, Episcopal Clergy, officiating. Burial followed in the Levi Lester Cemetery on Pounding Mill at Hurley.
  Active pallbearers were nephews.

Della Mae Fields
(Gretna, VA)

  Della Mae Fields, 67, of Gretna, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006 in a Lynch-burg hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Helton. She was a homemaker and was of the Pentecostal faith.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Randolph "June" Fields; one son, Gary Mitchell Fields; one sister, Hazel Helton; and one brother, Troy Helton.
  She is survived by two sons, Dolphus Lee Fields and wife, Faye, of Milton, NC and Jerry Ralph Fields of Luray; one brother, Carnis Helton of Manassas; one sister, Jean Wilson and husband, Jimmy Ray, of Independence; five grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday at Honaker with the Revs. Ancil Childress and C.B. Helton officiating. Interment followed in the Helton Cemetery at Stinson Ridge.
  Pallbearers will be relatives and friends.
 


Orville Kenneth Stapleton
(Glade Spring, VA)

  Orville Kenneth Stapleton, 75, of Glade Spring, died Sunday, April 2, 2006 in Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC.
  Born in Feds Creek, KY, he was the son of the late Orville and Hettie Kilgore Stapleton. He was retired from Ford Motor Company and served his country in both branches of the Army and Navy. He was a member of the Macedonia Church of Christ in Abingdon.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Faye Stapleton; three sisters, Nancy Jane Fuller, Betty Jane Hudson, Mary Elizabeth Stapleton; one brother, Robert Lee Stapleton.
  He is survived by one son, Gregory Stapleton and wife, Deborah, of Charlotte; one sister, Kathryn Church of Ohio; one grandson, Kenneth Robert Stapleton of Charlotte.
  Graveside services will be held today (Thursday), April 6 in the Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Evg. Michael McCoy officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by Virginia Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Robert Stapleton, Reggie Simpson, John Kovach, Bernie McCamley, and French Altizer.

Bill C. Sutherland
(Honaker, VA)

  Bill C. Sutherland, 82, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 in Wellmont Hospice House following an extended illness.
  Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late K.B. and Frances Wright Suther-land. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and attended Finney Baptist Church. A self-employed trucker and farmer, he was retired from E. Dillon and Company. He was a former member of the Honaker Lions Club, a charter member of the Redbud Festival and a former member of the board of directors of the Russell County Farmer Bureau. A World War II Army Air Corps veteran, he was in the 1896th Aviation Engineering Battalion and served almost three years in the South Pacific. During his military career, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with two bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Mark Lynn Sutherland in 1991; three brothers, Earl Sutherland, Ross Sutherland and Cecil Sutherland; and two sisters, Gertrude Carty and Rose Powers.
  He is survived by his wife, Lucille Browning Sutherland; two sons, Dr. Paul Alan Sutherland and wife, Susan, of Gloucester Point and John Ross Sutherland and wife, Janet, of Honaker; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandson.
  Services were held Sunday at Honaker with the Revs. Stephen Musick and Chris Musick officiating. Entombment followed in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon. Military graveside honors were conducted by Highlands Community Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard of Abingdon.
  Pallbearers were Ross Sutherland, Aaron Ratliff, Dallas Harris, Brian Fuller, O.B. Lockhart, Foster Fuller, Kenny Crabtree and Virgil Crabtree.
  Honorary pallbearers were Frosty Crabtree, Ray Smith, Bob K. Sutherland, Fonso Sutherland, D.B. Sutherland, Woodrow Sutherland, Curvin Fletcher, Neil Tiller, Chad Barton, Roy Sauls, Harry Jackson, Bill Ed Sample and James Vernon Stanley.
 


Elmer Lee Deel Sr.
(Honaker, VA)

  Elmer Lee "Jack" Deel, Sr., 83, of the Big A Mountain section of Honaker, died Monday, April 3, 2006 in a Richlands hospital.
  Born in Tazewell County, he was a son of the late William Floyd and Eura Mae Robinson Deel. He was a graduate of Honaker High School and a United States Army veteran, having served during World War II. He had retired as a radiology technician and had been employed at Mattie Williams Hospital and Humana Hospital. He was a member of Jackson’s Chapel.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Jane Neverosky; three brothers, Bobbie Mack Deel, Pat Deel and Donald Deel; and one grandson, Thomas Chase Ball.
  He is survived by his wife, Laura Deel; two daughters, Debbra and husband, Sherman Harris, of Richlands and Barbara and Randy Dye of Swords Creek; four sons, Elmer Lee Deel, Jr. and wife, JoAnne, of Belfast, Michael Lawrence and Brenda Deel of Honaker, Curtis and Kay Deel of Sparta, TN and Alvin Deel and Mary Ellen Peck of Honaker; one brother, William Floyd Deel, Jr. of Northern Virginia; four sisters, Carmen Black of Lebanon, Wilma Blaquiere of Detroit, MI, Sherry Arriaga of Chicago, IL and Betty Joyce of Cicero, IL; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held Friday, April 7 in Honaker with the Revs. Chester Dye, Clyde Lambert and Mark Westerbee officiating. Interment will follow in the Deel Cemetery near the home. Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon.
  Active pallbearers will be Joey Dye, Anthony Deel, Dustin Deel, Robert Neverosky, Ernie Penley, Danny Penley, Dennis Honaker, Jack Barton, Paul Gross and Allen Gross.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Roger Hoebelheinrich, Dr. James McVey, Dr. M.R. Patel and Randy Miller.
 


Beulah Faye Farmer
(Bristol, VA)

  Beulah Faye Sullivan Farmer, 79, of Bristol, VA, died Monday, April 3, 2006 in Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN.
  Born in Bee, she was a daughter of the late Christopher and Ailcie Lambert Sullivan. She had lived in the Bristol area for the past 25 years, moving there from Bee. She was a member of the Duty Church of God and attended the Trigg Street Church of God. She was owner and operator of Tri-City Trailer Park and Farmer’s Body Shop.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Farmer; one son, James Stanley Farmer; one son-in-law, Dallas F. James; three brothers, Paul Sullivan, George Sullivan and Arthur Lee Sullivan; one sister, Evonne Stacy; four half-sisters, Martha Sullivan Lambert, Rausie Sullivan O’Quinn, Mary Anne Sullivan and Hazel Sullivan; one half-brother, Arthur Sullivan.
  She is survived by two daughters, Velma Carol Farmer James of Honaker and Mrs. Darrell (Sue) Farmer Boyd of Abingdon; one son, Clell Farmer and wife, Linda, of Abingdon; eight sisters, Mae Lovett of Norton, Mrs. Harley (Bessie) Lester, Mrs. Ervin (Laurie) Breeding and the Rev. Roy Lee (Delphia) Wilson, all of Bee, Mrs. Eurice (Lucille) Lester of Lebanon, Maudie Gay Barton of Davenport, Mrs. Paul (Irene) Harris of Belfast and Mrs. Gerald (Arlene) Fletcher of Honaker; two brothers, the Rev. Donald Sullivan and wife, Kathy, of Bee and the Rev. Roy Sullivan and wife, Joyce, of Hansonville; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today, (Thursday), April 6 in Honaker with the Revs. Wayne Chant and James Beavers officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
  Pallbearers will be Dewell Stevens, Darrell Stevens, Harold W. Stevens, Donald Ray Sullivan, Rodney Lester, Randall Lester, David Lee Harris, Stan Sullivan, Brad Farmer and Clinton Farmer.
