Five Talented Seniors Among Returnees for Cobra Baseball
by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Including newcomers like Virginia High and John Battle, Region D is now home to seven programs who, combined, own over 20 state baseball championships.
Then there's the other end of the region, where small schools like Council just hope, most years, to simply get to Region D, the playoffs, that is, every twenty or thirty years or so.
The top programs in the region, most of which have three and four times the enrollment of the smallest schools, tend to have feeder programs and players who have the opportunity to play more games before they reach varsity than varsity players at schools like Council will play in their entire careers.
There are, however, good players at the Councils and Hurleys and Twin Valleys of the region, and they have dreams and goals, too, even if reality forces them to have more modest ones. Earning a Region D playoff berth is one of them and Council will give that goal its best shot with five talented and experienced returnees in seniors Kegan Bostic, Corey Barton, Ethan Ball and Shannon Breeding and sophomore Matt Boyd.
The keys for the Cobras, who have six seniors overall, are pitching, an improved defense and consistent production from its top five, including Bostic and Breeding. Bostic batted .286 with three home runs last season, and was the number two starting pitcher behind Justin Boyd, who graduated last year. Bostic becomes the number one man on the mound, with Breeding in the number two slot.

Panthers Win One of Three Games To Earn Seven Place in New Peoples Bank Basketball Classic; Edges Pound, 11-7

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

Twin Valley salvaged a win in a consolation contest Thursday afternoon to take one out of three games in the first annual New Peoples Bank Spring Classic at Harding Field in Honaker.
The Panthers edged Pound, 11-7, in the seventh place game. Twin Valley lost to Holston, 18-7, on Tuesday, and fell to Patrick Henry, 17-1, on Wednesday. All three games were played at Honaker.
Jacob St. Clair homered, drove in three runs, and worked six innings on the mound to earn the win in Thursday's contest. Josh Smith had three hits and St. Clair and Adam Keen each had two hits for the Panthers (1-3), who made just one error and walked just one batter in picking up their first win of the year.
Walks and errors were major issues in both Panther losses.

Grundy Picks Up First Diamond Win With 6-4 Road Victory at Ervinton

Grundy picked up its first win of the 2008 baseball season by defeating Ervinton, 6-4, Friday afternoon at Nora.
The game was the opening contest of a scheduled doubleheader and went just five innings. The second game was called due to darkness.
Cody Billiter and Joseph Stephens each had two hits to lead Grundy's 10-hit attack. Billiter was 2-for-3, drove in two runs and stole two bases.
Stephens also went 2-3 with a single and a double and two RBIs in support of winning pitcher Cody Cantrell.
Cantrell started and worked the first four innings.
Freshman Cody Justus worked the fifth and earned a save.
Grundy's Monday contest with Buchanan County rival Council was rained out and rescheduled for April 12.
