Hurdle Ray Cantrell
(Pilgrim's Knob)

    Hurdle Ray Cantrell, 62, of Pilgrim's Knob, died Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, KY.
    Born March 3, 1946 in McDowell County, WV, he was the son of the late Burleigh and Margie Cooper Cantrell. He retired in 1988 following employment for six years with United Coal Company. He was a member of the Pilgrim's Knob Church of God.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
     He is survived by his wife, Delza Vandyke Cantrell; two daughters, Michelle Elswick and husband, Scott, of Grundy and Tonya Cantrell of Virginia; one son, Gary Cantrell of Virginia; one brother, Ron Cantrell of Oakwood; four sisters, Norma Owens and husband, Kenneth, of Cincinnati, OH, Vivian Blankenship of Bluefield, VA, Sharon Brown and Deborah Price, both of Griffin, GA; one step-daughter, Larissa Elswick of Grundy; several nieces and nephews.
      Services were held Wednesday, April 2 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel, Keen Mountain with the Rev. Charles Hubbard officiating. Burial followed in the Vandyke-Hinkle Cemetery at Dismal.
     Pallbearers were Daniel Vandyke, Jason Price, Greg Owens, James Mitchell, David Vandyke and Ron Cantrell.
     Honorary pallbearers were Carl Keene, Otis Street, staff and patients of Good Sheppard Nursing Home in Phelps, KY.
     Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Walter Justus
(Vansant)

     Walter Justus, 65, of Vansant, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at a Richlands hospital.
     Born June 2, 1942 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Harrison and Mary Bell Kennedy Justus. He was a retired coal miner.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Nyla Jean Justus and Darcus Whitt; one grandchild, Lee Ann McCoy; and five brothers, Ollison, Matthew, Iverson, Willie and Junior Justus; and two sisters, Viola and Pearly Justus.
     He is survived by his wife, Virginia Justus; four daughters, Lisa Stacy and Lora Kay Justus, both of Vansant, Angie Stacy of Beckley, WV and Dolly Whitt of Bristol, TN; two sons, Quincy Justus of Vansant and Terry Justus of Iaeger, WV; two brothers, John R. Justus and Zeb Justice, both of Panther, WV; two sisters, Shirley Matney of Hurley and Lucille Liittle of Pineville, WV; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Saturday, March 29 at Little Zion Old Regular Baptist Church at Panther with Elders Kermit Lester, Dave Gibson, David Lester and Arthur Short officiating. Burial followed in the Floyd Justus Cemetery at Hurley.
     Pallbearers were family and friends.

Josie Mullins
(Gibsonton, FL)

    Josie Mullins, 90, of Gibsonton, FL, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
    Born in Dwight, she was a resident of Gibsonton since 1962 and was an avid Bingo player.
    She was preceded in death by her husbands, Stuart Hardin and Boyd Mullins, Sr., and one daughter, Dollie Justus.
    She is survived by her children, Eldin Hardin of West Virginia, Clifford Hardin of Tennessee, Parker Hardin of Mississippi, Jay Hardin, Okie Youngman and Boyd Mullins, Jr. of Florida, Alberta Stacey of Virginia and Betty Sue Ortiz of Texas; 39 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Thursday, March 27 at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, Riverview. Interment followed in the Hackney Cemetery at Riverview.

Effie Rachel Looney
(Floyd, VA)

    Effie Rachel McGlothlin Shortridge Looney, 93, of Floyd, formerly of Grundy, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008.
    Born June 27, 1914 in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late William "Howard" McGlothlin and Jenny Ellen Looney. She was a member of Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church at Vansant and was baptized in 1935 by Elder Henry Mullins. She had resided in Rosedale before moving to Floyd.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Shortridge; her second husband, Cecil Looney; one son, Donald Shortridge; one grandson, Jonathan Horne; three sisters, Vernie Baldridge, Juanita McGlothlin and Ora Baldridge; and two brothers, Roy and Mack McGlothlin.
    She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Gail Shortridge of Floyd; one daughter, Lois Shortridge Horne of Floyd; two sisters, Etta Ruth Justice of Home Creek and Nell Branham of Richlands; three brothers, Frank McGlothlin of Vansant, Jesse McGlothlin of Blountville, TN, and Ed McGlothlin of Vermillion, OH; six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
    Services were held Saturday, March 29 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff with Elders Ezra Davis, Jr. and Aaron Williams officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
    Pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Singleton Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.


Dorothy Owens
(Huntsville, AR)

    Dorothy Owens, 83, of Huntsville, AR, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at her home in Huntsville.
    She was born in Buchanan County where she had resided most of her life.
    She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wade M. Dales; her second husband, Roy Owens; five brothers; one sister; one daughter; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
    She is survived by 12 children, three brothers, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
     Services were held Monday, March 31 at Haysi Funeral Home with Giles Ball and Andrew Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the Owens Cemetery at Vansant.
    Pallbearers were grandsons.
    Honorary pallbearers were Fonnie Boyd, Lonnie Boyd, Don Colley, Dan Colley, Jerry Ratliff, June Ratliff, Clifford Church and Charles Stevens.
    Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Swanson Tiller
(Claypool Hill)

    Swanson Tiller, 70, of Claypool Hill, died Friday, March 28, 2008 in a Kingsport, TN hospital.
    Born April 2, 1937 in Council, he was a son of the late Arthur Earl and Mary Marie Wilson Tiller. He had resided in the Claypool Hill area for the past 30 years and was a member of Trinity Freewill Baptist Church at Indian Creek. A retired miner, he was formerly employed by Island Creek Coal Company. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Retha Tiller.
    He is survived by one daughter, Crystal Smith, and husband, Mitch, of Lebanon; two sons, Rodney Tiller and wife, Lisa, of Wardel and Anthony Tiller and wife, Donnetta, of Princeton, WV; five grandchildren, Blane Breeding, Alex Tiller, A.J. Tiller, Tori Reed and Jeremy Smith; three brothers, Willis Tiller of Council, Ronald Tiller of Breaks and Raymond Tiller of Abingdon; one sister, Lois Edwards of Bee; his former wife and the mother of his children, Jeri Tiller of Richlands; several nieces and nephews.
    Services were held Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Entombment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Claypool Hill.
    Pallbearers were Blane Breeding, Mitch Smith, Keith Helbert, Shawn Tiller, Todd Tiller and G.C. Barton.
    Honorary pallbearer was Dr. Brian Maggard.


Edna S. Ray
(Honaker, VA)

     Edna S. Ray, 86, of the Back Valley section of Honaker, died Friday, March 28, 2008 in a Lebanon hospital.
     Born May 14, 1921 in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Ida Alice Stump. A lifelong resident of the area, she was a graduate of Honaker High School, a member of Blackford Methodist Church and attended Jackson Chapel Church. She was formerly employed as a cook and a waitress at the King Kone and City Grill in Honaker.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Everett Ray; one son, Carlos Ray; two sisters, Marie Ray and Rosie Musick; two brothers, Harvey Stump and James Stump; and one great-grandchild.
     She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Paul Ray of Swords Creek, Shirley and Donald Street of Cleveland and Kathy and Richard Harris of Honaker; one daughter-in-law, Maggie Ray of Lebanon; one former son-in-law, Kenneth Ray Horne of Honaker; one sister-in-law, Gaynell Stump of Honaker; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
    Services were held Sunday in Honaker with the Revs. David Perkins and Rick Thompson officiating. Interment followed in the Musick Cemetery on Lewis Creek in Honaker.
     Pallbearers were relatives and friends.


Terry Luther Davis
(Cedar Bluff, VA)

     Terry Luther Davis, 52, of Cedar Bluff, formerly of Buchanan County, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell following an extended illness.
    Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Ted Gene Davis of Cedar Bluff and the late Eunice Justus Davis. He was a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and a member of Poplar Creek Church of Christ. He was a graduate of Hurley High School and a retired truck driver.
     In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Oliver and Lowenza Justus, and his paternal grandparents, Charlie and Lula F. Davis.
     In addition to her father, he is survived by his step-mother, Nancy Matney Davis, of Cedar Bluff; four step-sisters, Debbie and husband, John Crigger of Oakwood, Diana and husband, Gary Wade, of Shortts Gap, Patty and husband, Buzz Ratliff, of Cedar Bluff and Bridgett and husband, Dean Cole, of Abingdon; 14 step-nieces and nephews.
     Services were held Friday, March 28 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. William L. Neeley officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
     Active pallbearers were family and friends.
     Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Lila Jane Payne
(Panther, WV)

     Lila Jane Reed Payne, 73, of Panther, WV, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at a Phelps, KY nursing home.
     Born April 6, 1934 in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Josie Lester Justice.
     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elza Reed; one grandson, Robert Bowling; two sisters, Bessie Estep and Lena Bryant; and three brothers, Lonnie, Burl and Mack Justus.
     She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Bennett (Bernice) Cline of Bluefield, WV, Mrs. Monroe (Mildred) "June" Collins of Panther, Kathleen Reed of Lexington, NC and Susan Reed of Panther; four sons, Doug Reed and Timmy Reed and wife, Mary, all of Panther and Ricky Reed and wife, Lori, and Micky Reed, all of Lexington; two sisters, Julia Roberts of Iaeger, WV and Mrs. Hershell (Polly) Ball of Panther; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
      Services were held Tuesday, April 1 at Little Dove Old Regular Baptist Church at Hurley with Elders David Lester, Danny Hurley, John R. Justice, Herman West, Howard Daniels and Roger Coleman officiating. Burial followed in the Noah Justus Cemetery at Mudfork, Panther.
     Pallbearers were family and friends.
     Virginia Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
