Honaker Opens BDD With 25-1 Rout of Council

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

One day after surviving a triple play to defeat Castlewood, Honaker needed precious little help in opening BDD play with a 25-1 rout of Council Tuesday (April 18) at Willie Sullivan Field.
The Tigers scored in double figures in each of its first two at-bats, taking a 21-0 lead in the second inning.
Honaker packaged 15 hits, eight hit batsmen and nine Council errors. Freshman David Keene led the Tigers, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
Aaron Whited was 1-for-3 and scored four runs, while Chance Dye was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs.
On the mound, Adam Honaker and Kolby Miller combined on a two-hitter for the Tigers.
Council’s lone hit through four innings was a single to right by Corey Barton in the third. The Cobras’ lone run came on a walk to Shannon Breeding and a two-out RBI single by Daniel Lester in the fifth.
Honaker hosts Haysi in a key BDD contest Friday.
       Council hosts Hurley on Tuesday.

Grundy Girls, G-Men Claim Team Titles in Open Track & Field Meet

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

The Grundy girls took advantage of the situation and dominated, while the Graham boys slipped past Haysi and Mountain Mission at an open track and field meet Wednesday at Nelson Memorial Field.
In a match that featured mostly Southwest District and Black Diamond District teams, including a Richlands girls squad missing one of its best athletes, the Lady Wave tallied 169 team points.
Mountain Mission finished second with 94 points.  Elizabeth Lindsay, Kaitlyn Riley, Ashleigh Stephens, Ashley Cook and Corrie Rife led the way for Grundy.
“We caught Richlands a little shorthanded,” Grundy girls Coach Craig Plymal said. “They had some girls out with a little church group. But we’d been within 10 to 12 points of them.
“We can win in the district with these girls. We just have to take some seconds and fourth and fifths in each event.”
The Lady Wave won six individual events Wednesday, including five field events.
Lindsay won both the high jump (4-8) and long jump (14-11) and placed in three other events. The Grundy senior finished second in the 100 meter dash, third in the triple jump and fourth in the 400 meters.
Riley won the discus with a throw of 87-feet-2 inches. She placed in four events overall, including a second-place finish behind Stephens in the shot put.
A freshman, Riley was third in the 300 meter hurdles, sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth in the long jump. Stephens, who heaved the shot some 29 feet, placed second behind Riley in the discus.
Cook won the triple jump (27-11 ¾) and placed second in the long jump. Rife was the only Lady Wave winner in running events, capturing the 400 with a time of 1:07.8.
“This is the second time this year we’ve won every field event,” Plymal said. “We had a great meet. Elizabeth was close to a standard in the long jump. Corrie Rife’s been running real good in the sprints.
“Riley has really come on the last two meets. She scored 28 points for us in a meet at Richlands. She’s the new addition that we needed. And Ashley Cook has been coming along.”

Cobras End 8-Game Losing Streak with 6-5 Non-District Victory Over Twin Springs

by Lloyd Combs
Sports Reporter

          Council staged two comebacks Thursday.
First it got past an embarrassing defeat it suffered earlier in the week. Then it overcame a five-run deficit.
The Cobras ended an eight-game losing streak with a dramatic, 6-5, non-district victory over Twin Springs Thursday evening at Willie Sullivan Field.
Cody Jackson scored the game-winning run on a balk in the bottom half of the sixth. It broke a tie game in which each team scored five runs in one inning, in a game where each squad gained one run after debating a call with the umpires.
Twin Springs plated five runs, four of them unearned, in the second. The Titans got just two hits in the inning and managed just three hits overall against winning pitcher Kegan Bostic.
The unusual rally included a walk, a balk and two errors. It began with runners on second and third, a strikeout, wild pitch and a delay, because the defense thought the home plate umpire had ruled the ball dead.
The runner was sent back to third and the batter was called out. Twin Springs’ Coach Jerry Fields pleaded his case, the Titans got the first run of the game and the batter was awarded first.
The Cobras bounced back in the fifth. A two-run double by Corey Barton keyed the five-run rally.
Natasha Wilson added an RBI single as Council (2-8) tied the game at 5-5.
In the sixth, Jackson was originally called out, but was awarded home on a balk after Council Coach Dave Rasnake successfully pleaded his case that the pitcher threw to third before he stepped off the pitching rubber.
It was a big turnaround for Council, and not just because of its 5-0 deficit and month-long losing streak. The Cobras entered Thursday’s contest on the heels of a 25-1 loss to Honaker on Tuesday.
“I talked to all the kids about playing with heart,” Coach Rasnake said. “We talked about it after Tuesday’s game. We talked about it in class. And the kids responded.
