Alpha
Blankenship Scott of the Rt. 1 section of Vansant, died
Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at her home following an extended
illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Charlie and Emeline Owens Blankenship. She was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and was a retired cafeteria
manager of the Buchanan County School System where she served
for 37 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
brother, Gordon Blankenship.
She is survived by her husband, Earl J. Scott; one daughter,
Karen Scott Willis of Vansant; two sons, Mike and wife, Teresa
Ann Scott of Haysi and Randy and wife, Sue Scott of Vansant;
two sisters, Darlene McClain of Vansant and Shirley Akers of
Grundy; three brothers, Buford Blankenship, Garnie
Blan-kenship and Jerry Blankenship, all of Vansant; four
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, April 21 at Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Gary Viers officiating. Burial followed
in the Blankenship Cemetery on Lover’s Gap near Prater.
Active pallbearers were Lance Scott, Mark Lowe, Jason
Lester, Jack Yates, Tivis O’Quinn and Hearl Shortridge.
Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Clint Sutherland and staff,
Pat and Fayne Viers, William P. Harris, Eural Viers, Phillip
Willis, Freddie Akers, Max Lewis, Gary Rose, all brothers and
sisters-in-law and all nieces and nephews.

Opal Garnet Thomas

Opal
Garnet Charles Thomas, 94, of Royal City, died Wednesday,
April 19, 2006 in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following
an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late
Andrew Jackson Charles, Jr. and Eliza Ramey Charles. She was a
lifelong resident of the Buchanan County area, a member of
Grundy Methodist Church and was commissioned as a Kentucky
Colonel. She was a graduate of Elkhorn City High School and
Pikeville Junior College and was a retired school teacher from
Buchanan County and Pike County Public Schools. She was the
last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Howell Moore (Billy) Thomas, April 16, 1995, nine
sisters and four brothers.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, April 22 at Grundy Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Lester M. Frank officiating. Entombment
followed in Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley
Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbearers were Gary Kent Hughes, Blake Compton,
Mickey McGlothlin, David Bevins and Don Baldwin.
Honorary pallbearers were Pat Baldwin, Shelby Compton, Penny

Dewey Potter, 74, of Hurley, died Friday, April 21, 2006 at
his home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Tom and
Evelyn Smith Potter. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan
County and a member of Blackey Baptist Church where he served
as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, superintendent and a song
leader. He was a retired coal mine operator for 49 year, was a
member of the Gideons International, a member of Grundy Lodge
IOOF No. 17 and chairman of the Knox Creek Medical Board;
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
three brothers, Hassell, Clyde and Tommy Potter; and one
sister, Hettie Sullivan.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Justus Potter; three sons,
John and wife, Linda Potter and David and wife, Vicki Potter,
all of Hurley and Kenneth and wife, Ida Potter of Wise; three
sisters, Trula and husband, Marvin Puckett of Harrisburg, OH,
Opal Osborne of Toledo, OH and Gaye McCormick of Gibson, NC;
six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, April 25 at Blackey Baptist
Church with Ministers Larry Stinson, Willard Sturgeon and
Eddie Lindsay officiating. Entombment followed in Mountain
Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Harold Gene Mullins

Harold
Gene Mullins, 79, of Vansant, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at
Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN, following an
extended illness.
Born in Draffin, KY, he was the son of the late Scott and
Alpha Ratliff Mullins. He was a veteran of the United States
Army and Air Force, serving our country in World War II and
the Korean Conflict and was a self-employed truck driver.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Helen Hale Mullins and by his brother, Frank Mullins.
He is survived by his son, Danny Gene Mullins of Norton; one
brother, Mack Mullins of Surgoinsville, TN; and two grandsons,
David Garrett Mullins of Norton and Linden Cody Mullins of
Bristol, TN.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, April 26 at Looney’s
Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sylvia Jones
officiating. Military rites were conducted at the church by
members of John Ratliff Post No. 164 of the American Legion.

Grady
Franklin "Frank" Colley, of Council, died Monday, April 24,
2006 at his home following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Ayers and
Sally Johnson Colley. He had spent his early life in the area,
moving to Indiana and later back to the local area. He was a
1956 graduate of Council High School and was a retired section
foreman with Pittston Coal Company.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four
brothers, Arson Colley, Edward Colley, Ferrell Colley and
Clifford Colley; one sister, Nellie Colley Rife; his
father-in-law, Jency Dye; three sisters-in-law and two
brothers-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Dye Colley; two daughters,
Barbara and husband Adrin McGlothlin of Council and Sherry and
Rick Presley of Davenport; two sons, Randall Colley and Timmy
Colley, both of Council; one brother, Ayers Colley and wife,
Sue, of Richlands; two sisters, Mary Taylor of Georgia and
Emma Gaye Johnson and husband, Andrew or Raven; mother-in-law,
Clara Dye, of Raven; two grandchildren, several nieces and
nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Honaker with the
Revs. Kyle Ratliff and Carl Burmeier officiating. Interment
will follow in the Colley Cemetery at Murphy.
Pallbearers will be Danny Colley, Donald Colley, Jeff
Colley, Eddie Lockhart, Clifford Church and Arthur Boyer.

Diana Puckett Hagerman, 48, of Jolo, WV, died Friday, April
21, 2006 at her home.
Born in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late
Malachi (Mack) Puckett and Bookie Shortt Puckett. She was a
lifelong resident of Jolo.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Hobert Hager-man;
one daughter, Tabitha LeAnn Hagerman of the home; one son,
James David Wagoner and wife, Misty, of Jewell Ridge; one
sister, Martha (Marti) Johnson of Grundy; eight brothers,
James Puckett of Rural Retreat, Tommy Puckett of Hillsville,
Robert Puckett of Abbs Valley, Merle Puckett of Raysal, WV,
Noah Puckett and Danny Puckett, both of Paynesville, WV and
Wesley Puckett and Freddie Puckett, both of Raysal, WV; one
granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Monday, April 24 at the Community
Church of the Living God on Three Forks, Jolo, with the
Revs. Glenn Blankenship, Charlie Kennedy and Hubert Swiney
officiating. Burial followed in the Hatfield Cemetery on
Buckeye at Jolo.

Lawrence
Hackney, 84, of Thurman, OH, formerly of Buchanan County,
died Monday, April 17, 2006 in Grant Medical Center,
Columbus, OH, following an extended illness.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Thomas
and Tilda Jane Scarberry Hackney and was of the Protestant
faith. He was a retired carpenter for a manufacturing
company and a former coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his wife, Lois Kinder Hackney; two daughters, Della Fielder
and Geraldine Hackney; two sisters and two brothers.
He is survived by two daughters, Nell and husband, Bill
Stevens, of Seaside, OR and Sharon and husband, Ronnie Hunt,
of Phyllis, KY; three sons, Bill Hackney of Mouthcard, KY,
Danny Hackney of Thurman and Robert and wife, Berniece Damon
of Raccoon, KY; two brothers, Jessie Hackney of Logan, OH
and Lacy Hackey of Bristol, VA; nine grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, April 22 at Grundy Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Jarrod Hunt officiating. Burial
followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Alpharee Edwards, 69, of Clinchco, died Sunday, April 23,
2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late
Russell and Evonie Mullins Edwards. She was a homemaker, a
member of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church and was a past
member of the Haysi Rescue Squad Crewettes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by
two brothers, Donnie Lee and Claudie Edwards; and one
sister, Maudie Edwards.
She is survived by her husband, L.C. Edwards; three
daughters, Christine Willis and fiance’, Michael Sanders of
Pound, Cindy (Paul Jessee) Mullins of Clintwood and Carol
(David) Rasnake, of Clinchco; four sons, Donnie (Jean)
Edwards, Kenny (Angie) Edwards and Terry Edwards, all of
Clinchco and Marty (Diana) Edwards of Birchleaf; two
sisters, Roxie Edwards of Birchleaf and Pearl Lyall of
Clinchco; three brothers, Cecil Edwards of Clinchco, Robert
Edwards of Michigan and Tivis Edwards of Raleigh, NC; 20
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday, April 26 at Haysi Funeral
Home with Elders Garnell Gilbert, Roger Fuller and Noah Kim
Edwards officiating. Burial followed in the Nathan Edwards
Cemetery, Clinchco.

Nelson Ratliff, Jr., died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at
Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He
had lived most of his life in Dickenson County and had lived
in Bristol for the past two years. He was retired from Pet
Milk Company, was a retired coal miner, a U.S. Army veteran
and a member of VFW Onsby Rose Post 3782.
In addition to his parents, George and Verna (Deel)
Ratliff, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Annette
Ratliff, and two brothers, Everett and Bill Ratliff.
He is survived by his daughter, Geri Hill and husband,
Mike, of Bristol; four half-sisters, Margaret Tollison, Ada
Plymale, Claudette Mullins and Judy Burman; one
half-brother, Clyde Corbet Keene; one grandchild and two
great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday, April 21 at Mullins Funeral
Home Chapel in Clintwood with the Rev. Nick Brewer
officiating. Burial followed in the Bud Deel Cemetery, Lum
Hollow section at Prater. Military graveside services were
conducted by Clintwood DAV Chapter 35, VFW Post 8979 and
American Legion Post 227.
Pallbearers were Hansel Edwards, Steve Mullins, Cody
Mullins, Cole Mullins, Mike Hill, Everett Ratliff, Jr. and
Johnny Goodwin.

Wilfred Worley, 66, a resident of Milton, FL, died
Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at his home following an extended
illness.
Born in Leemaster, he was the son of the late Raleigh E.
Sr. and Bonnie Yates Worley, He had made his home in Milton
for the past 26 years. While in Buchanan County, he was
employed by Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of
UMWA Local at Keen Mountain. He was of the Baptist faith and
was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his first wife, Georgia Kansas Matney Worley; one son, Gary
Wayne Worley; and two brothers, Roger and Joseph Worley.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa Worley; three daughters,
Teena Worley of King, NC, Stephanie Dawn Gramm and husband,
Harry, of Milton and Bonnie Elizabeth Worley of Evergreen,
AL; four sons, Jody Worley and wife, Annie, of Pace, FL,
Terry Clifton of Kingsport, TN, Rodney Clifton and wife,
Brandy, and James Clifton and wife, Valorie, both of Milton;
two sisters, Margaret Mullins and Darla Vandyke, both of
Bristol, VA; two brothers, Norman Douglas Worley of Raven
and Raleigh E. Worley Jr. of Claypool Hill; 13 grandchildren
and one great-granddaughter.
Services were held Sunday, April 23 at Hurst-Scott Funeral
Chapel in Richlands with Evg. Lois Null officiating.
Interment followed at the Esau-Rife Family Cemetery at Keen
Mountain.

Ernie
Tiller, 54, of Honaker, died Saturday, April 22, 2006 in a
Lebanon hospital.
Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Elijah
and Maggie Gaynell Stevens Tiller. A lifelong resident of
the area, he attended In the Beginning Fellowship Church and
Trinity Freewill Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the
United States Army and was a disabled coal miner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two brothers, Tivis Tiller and wife, Jean, and Roy Scott
Tiller; seven nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Tiller; one daughter,
Shannon Marie and husband, Roy Eugene Hurt, of Swords Creek;
five brothers, Robert and wife, Carol Tiller of Bee, the
Rev. John and wife, Donna Tiller and James and wife, Kathy
Tiller, all of Hansonville; the Rev. Larry and wife, Judy
Tiller of Saltville and William and wife, Tammy Tiller, of
Rosedale; two grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday in Honaker with the Revs. John
Tiller and Larry Tiller officiating. Burial followed in
Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon.

Elder Ervin O’quin

Elder
Ervin O’quin, 78, of Haysi, died Sunday, April 23, 2006 at
Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Born to the late George Marion and Alcie Ann Deel O’quin,
he was a coal miner and farmer and a veteran of the United
States Army. He was a member of Russell Prater Old Regular
Baptist Church and was a minister of the gospel.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two infant sons, Purman and Noah O’quin, and two brothers,
Allen and Hayes O’quin.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha O’quin; three sons,
Harbin O’quin of the home, Cleovis "Moe" O’quin of Poplar
Creek and Hayes (Cassie) O’quin of Haysi; one daughter,
Kamela (Monty) Deel of Danville; one sister, Morgania Deel,
of Haysi; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, April 25 at Haysi Funeral Home
with Brother Gordon Deel and Elders Aven Viers, Andy Deel,
Ralph Mullins and Roger Coleman officiating. Burial followed
in the O’quin-Deel Cemetery at Rt. 2, Haysi. VFW Post 8979,
DAV Chapter 35 and American Legion Post 227 of Dickenson
County, conducted military graveside rites.

Clarence
"Dick" Allen Tracy, 82, of Haysi, died Tuesday, April 25,
2006 at his home.
Born in Illinois, he was a son of the late James and
Florence Tracy. He served in the U.S. Army in the South
Pacific during World War II where he earned the Bronze Star
and was retired from Jewell Smokeless Coal Co. where he was
a heavy equipment operator. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
two brothers, Paul and Earl Tracy.
He is survived by his wife, Melster Tracy; one step-son,
Luther "Butch" Sutherland of Haysi; one sister, Helen Cruzen
of Osage Beach, MO; two brothers, Wayne Tracy of Oblong,
Ill. and Lee Tracy of Michigan.
Funeral services will be held today (Thursday), April 27
at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Toy Looney, Ralph Mullins,
Aven Viers, Andy Deel and Gordon Deel officiating. Burial
will follow in the Tracy Cemetery at Haysi. VFW Post 8979,
DAV Chapter 35, and American Legion Post 227 of Dickenson
County will conduct military graveside rites.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be Luther "Butch" Sutherland and
Bob Sutherland.
