Library Landscaping Begins
Volunteers, Tech Students Lend a Hand |
by JoBeth Wampler
Staff Reporter |
|
The Buchanan County Public Library has begun a project that will redefine its appearance to passers-by.
On Saturday, approximately 40 volunteers from around the county and Virginia Tech crowded the library lawn, lending their helping hands to make the library a more appealing place.
"It's a big project," said Sherry Bright, library director. "And, we're planning to finish it by the spring of 2007."
When discussing potential updates to the library building, Bright said landscaping was always intended. Financially, however, she was reluctant to believe it was possible. That was before the Virginia Tech Community Design Assistance Center became involved. According to Bright, it was brought to her attention that the center helped non-profit organizations in need of redevelopment. After applying for Virginia Tech's assistance and being accepted, the Community Design Assistance Center informed Bright of a grant the library could apply for to receive financial assistance, as well. The Urban and Community Forestry Grant from the Virginia Department of Forestry was awarded to the library in the amount of $6,468, most of which will be spent on plants and materials. |

The
Appalachian
School
of
Law
will
learn
in
June
whether
it
will
be
granted
full
accreditation,
but
this
week,
took
one
step
closer
to
that
designation.
The American Bar Association’s Accreditation Committee
has
recommended
ASL
be
granted
full
approval.
An announcement of the proceedings was posted on ASL’s
website
and
confirmed
by
ASL
President
Lu
Ellsworth.
Ellsworth and ASL Dean Jeffrey Kinsler appeared before the ABA’s
Accreditation
Committee
last
Thursday
in
support
of
the
school’s
application
for
full
accreditation.
The law school was granted provisional accreditation
in
academic
year
2000-2001
and
this
year
applied
for
full
accreditation
from
the
ABA.
The committee’s recommendation, which was based
on
the
law
school’s
self-study,
its
annual
questionnaire
and
a
late
October-early
November
site
visit
by
an
ABA
evaluation
team,
was
hailed
as
an
important
step
in
the
process
toward
full
accreditation.
"Although this is an important accomplishment, one
step
remains
before
we
are
fully
approved,"
Kinsler
wrote
in
the
website
announcement.
"This
step
will
occur
in
mid-June,
at
which
time
the
ABA’s
Council
of
the
Section
on
Legal
Education
and
Admissions
to
the
Bar
will
consider
the
accreditation
committee’s
recommendation."
