Ollie Marie Linkous
(Grundy)

  Ollie Marie Church Linkous, 83, of Rt. 4, Grundy, died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late K.C. and Rosa Edna Nickles Church. She had resided in Abingdon several years prior to moving back to Buchanan County and was a retired employee of the United States Government as a supervisor for voter registration. She was a member of the Seventh Day Advent Church in Bristol and attended the Little Prater Church of Christ.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Earl Linkous in October 1997; two sisters and two brothers.
  She is survived by one son, Gregory Earl Linkous of Tennessee; two sisters, Suby and husband, Benny Ratliff of Grundy and Vicey Elizabeth Storm of Ashville, NC; one brother, Banner Church of Vansant; several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, April 17 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Forest Hill Memory Gardens, Abingdon.
  Active pallbearers were Jim Ratliff, Joe Ratliff, Ben Baldwin, Chuck Hardy, Kenny Perkins, Josh Viers, Keith Wildermuth and Josh Wildermuth.
  Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Dillow, David Hardin, Jean Hardin and Dr. J.G. Patel.
  Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Little Prater Church of Christ Building Fund, Rt. 4 Box 88, Grundy, VA 24614.

Betty Ann Sparks
(Wolford)

  Betty Ann Rasnick Sparks, 55, of the Wolford section of Buchanan County, died Monday, April 17, 2006 in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of Silas Rasnick of Rt. 3, Grundy and the late Oma Stacy Rasnick. She had been a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Knox Creek Church of God and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Hobert Sparks; three sons, David and wife, Angela Sparks of Pilgrim Knob, Eric Wesley Sparks and Ryan Sparks, both of Rt. 3, Grundy; one sister, Margie and husband, Robert Wood of Huntington, WV; one brother, Johnny and wife, Jennifer Rasnick of Alameda, New Mexico; and two grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), April 20 at 1 p.m. at the Knox Creek Church of God near Hurley with the Revs. Henry Rowe, Doug Blankenship and Charlie Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Willis Blankenship Cemetery on Main Knox near Hurley.
  Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

Allene Stiltner
(Grundy)

  Allene "Draxie" Bowman Stiltner, 60, of the New House section of Grundy, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Susan Charles Bowman. She was a lifetime resident of Buchanan County, attended Southwest Virginia Community College and was of the Protestant faith. She had attained her food services management certificate and was a former employee of Keen Mountain Correctional Center.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Curtis Bowman; one sister, Eula Faye Hawks; and one brother-in-law, B.G. "Shorty" McDaniel.
  She is survived by three daughters, Judy and husband, Wayne Elswick and Paula and husband, Bill Coleman, all of Vansant, and Donna Layne of Mavisdale; three sisters, Eva Ward and Martha Irene Horn, both of Grundy and Goldie McDaniel of Green Cove Springs, FL; four brothers, Luther and wife, Dorothy Bowman of Raven, Elmer and wife, Beverly Bowman of Grundy, Casby and wife, Shirley Bowman of Flora-home, FL and Roby and wife, Stella Bowman of Davenport; one brother-in-law, Donald Hawks of Grundy; one sister-in-law, Mary Bowman of Frenchburg, KY; three grandchildren, one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, April 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Michael Trent and Bill Boyd officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were nephews.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. J.G. Patel, Buchanan General ICU nursing staff, Dr. Pillai and employees of Keen Mountain Correctional Center.

Carmen Denise Matney
(Hurley)

  Carmen Denise Smith Matney, 38, of Hurley, died Sunday, April 16, 2006 in Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC following an extended illness.
  Born in Radford, she was a daughter of John Franklin "Frankie" Smith of Hurley and Donna Sue Dotson, also of Hurley. She had been a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of Word Evangelistic Outreach Church. She was a graduate of Hurley High School’s Class of 1986 , a graduate of Southwest Virginia Community College and was a former employee of Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands as a radiologist.
  She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Carson Dotson, Jr.; paternal grandmother, Georgia Lowe Smith; and paternal grandfather, Amos Smith.
  In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Eddy Dean Matney; maternal grandmother, Frankie Justus Dotson of Hurley; a special friend, Pamela Adkins Endicott, who donated bone marrow twice, giving Carmen four extra years of life; and several cousins.
  Services will be held Friday, April 21 at 1 p.m. at Word Evangelistic Outreach Church at Wolford with the Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers will be Johnny Smith, John Edward Potter, David Chafin, Chris Chafin, Hurshel Burks, Dewey Endicott and Skippy Braden.

Lewis William Boyd
(Rowe)

  Lewis William Boyd, 64, of the Fletcher’s Ridge section of Rowe, died Friday, April 14, 2006 in the Veteran’s Hospital in Johnson City, TN.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Rev. Jimmy Boyd and Lydia Cora Boyd. He had spent his early childhood in the area, moving back locally 13 years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church, was a United States Army veteran as a 36 G 20 for eight years, having served in Vietnam. He was a disabled construction worker.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Boyd; two daughters, Jacquinetta Jones and Susie Hunt; four brothers, Millard Boyd, Junior Boyd, Bufford Boyd and Tollie Boyd; and two sisters, Hattie Ray and Margaret Lounsbury.
  He is survived by his wife, Mattie Boyd; one daughter, Jean Boyd of Oregon; one son, Hurley Boyd; one sister, Dovie Yocum of Beaver Creek, OH; two brothers, Douglas Boyd of Piqua, OH and Russell Boyd of Middletown, OH; two step-sons, Wesley Hess of Lebanon and Jeffery Hess of Greene-ville, SC; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday in Honaker with the Revs. Bennie Harris and Clyde Lambert officiating. Interment followed in the McGlothlin Cemetery on Stinson’s Ridge. Military graveside honors were conducted by American Legion Post #164 of Grundy.
  Pallbearers were nephews, Dexter Ray, Richie Yocum, Roy Boyd, Steve Boyd, Bernard McGlothlin, Delmer Hess and special friend, George Helton.
  Honorary pallbearers were the doctors and staff of the Veteran’s Hospital in Johnson City and the staff of the Davenport Clinic.
 


Lavonne Gilliam Grizzle
(Conaway)

  Lavonne Gilliam Grizzle, 71, of Conaway, died Sunday, April 16, 2006 in the Carrington Place, Wytheville, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Darrell and Esteline Scott Gilliam. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Big Rock Church of Christ and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Grizzle, February 21, 2006.
  She is survived by three sons, Danny Grizzle and Randy Grizzle, both of Haysi and David and wife, Brenda Grizzle of Sugar Grove; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, April 19 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evgs. Sam Casebolt and Michael Trent officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Madison Sienna Brown
(Maxie)

  Infant Madison Sienna Brown, seven weeks old, died Monday, April 10, 2006 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.
  Born in Santarosa County, FL, February 17, 2006, she was the daughter of Michael Scott Brown and Katrina Altizer Brown of Maxie.
  In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Whitney Jayne Grizzle and Mycah Shay Brown, both of the home; one brother, Tyler Allen Grizzle of the home; paternal grandparents, Jackie Stiltner of Grundy and Johnny Lee Coleman, of Grundy; maternal grandparents, Charlie and Tami Altizer of Maxie; maternal great-grandmothers, Rosella Hess of Grundy and Molly Gladden of Mount Pleasant, MI; maternal great-grandfather, Robert Carlos Altizer of Maxie; step-great-grandmother, Bonnie Altizer of Maxie.
  Services were held Friday, April 14 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Pastors Danny Hess, Ronnie Sliger and Sister Pat Skeens officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were John Brown and Ryan Brown.

Pauline India Bennett
(Deskins)

  Pauline India Linkous Bennett, 83, of the Deskins section of Vansant, died Monday, April 17, 2006 in Clinch Valley Medical Center, Richlands, following an extended illness.
  Born in Blacksburg, she was a daughter of the late Earl McKinley and Bessie Reed Linkous. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, was a member of Grundy Bible Church and a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Vernon Bennett, April 1, 2000.
  She is survived by one daughter, Judy Pauline and husband, Ron Owens of Brown City, MI; one son, Paul Richard Bennett and fiance, Susan Stacy of Vansant; one sister, Marie, and husband, Harold Adkins of Bluefield, WV; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, April 21 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Tegler officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Mark Charles
(Elgin, SC)

  Mark Charles, 32, of Elgin, SC, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at his home following a brief illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of Susan Charles-Saylor and the late Miles Charles. He was a 1992 graduate of Grundy Senior High School, was operations manager for waste management in Columbia, SC and was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church.
  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lou Justus.
  He is survived by his wife, Tracy Huffman-Charles of Elgin, previously of Buchanan County; one son, Ethan Miles Charles; brothers, Isaac Charles of Elgin, William Ray Charles of Prosperity, SC, Jeffery Charles of Marion and Wayne Charles of Lexington, SC; sisters, Sherry Deel of Big Rock and Lynn Rose of Gaston, SC.
  Services were held Saturday, April 15 at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden, SC. Burial followed in the historic Quaker Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Isaac Charles, Justin Rose, Robbie Norwood, Chad Owens, Billy Warren, Zane Ferris, Benji Holder and Tim Benefield.

Madeline Coleman
(Charlottesville, VA)

  Madeline Looney Coleman, 75, of Charlottesville, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Hufford E. and Maude Lane Looney. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Charlottesville, was a retired businesswoman and a 1948 graduate of Hurley High School.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Lou (Tootsie) Looney, and one brother, George Arnold Looney.
  She is survived by her husband, Karl Burton Coleman; two daughters, Antonia Shonnane of Charlottesville and Lisa Coleman-Gorak of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Pauline Looney Lovell of Staunton; one brother, Dorsey Merton Looney of Roseann; one grandson, six nephews, seven nieces, several great-nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Sunday, April 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Michael Trent and special remarks by William Riland Beverlin, Brenda Lovell-Walters and Sharon C. Lovell. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were Stanley Terrence Lovell, Timothy Aaron Lovell, Kenneth Carl Reynolds II, Christopher Sean Beverlin, Jonathan Alexander Lovell and William Riland Beverlin.

Clara Muncy Stout
(Troutman, NC)

  Clara Muncy Stout, 58, of Troutman, NC, formerly of Jolo, WV, died Monday, April 10, 2006 at her home.
  Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late John Samuel Muncy and Ida Payne Muncy. She was a former member of the Family Worship Center of Jolo and a member of the Old Country Church of Mooresville, NC.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Jane Muncy; one brother, Verner Sparks; and one brother-in-law, Columbus Fowler.
  She is survived by one son, Kevin Allen Stout of Trout-man; five sisters, Lurena Honaker and husband, Richard of Grundy, Ruth Fowler of Dallas, GA, Johnnie Mae Rose and husband, G.W. of Asheboro, NC, Betty Carol Mitchell and husband, Doug, of Troutman and Wanda Gail Davis of Jolo; one grandchild, several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, April 15 at Jolo Worship Center in Jolo with the Revs. John Blankenship, Charlie Rose and Jeffery Mullins officiating. Burial followed in the Muncy Family Cemetery on Wolfpen at Jolo.

Ruby Ellen Barton
(Honaker, VA)

  Ruby Ellen Dotson Barton, 91, of Honaker, died Tuesday, April 18, 2006 in a Lebanon hospital.
  Born in Drill, she was a daughter of the late Conley and Sarah Gregg Dotson. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Blackford Church of Jesus Christ.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Barton, and 12 brothers and sisters.
  She is survived by one sister, Fannie Lester and husband, Dennis of Drill; foster daughter, Alice Israel of Drill; foster grandsons, Tony Israel and wife, Kim, of Merryville, TN and Tim Israel of Rosedale; four foster great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held today (Thursday) in Honaker with the Revs. Peerman Lester and Roby Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers will be Thurston Meade, Willard Meade, Bobby Vance, Jack Woodard, Shannon Compton and Jaron Compton.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Lester, Dr. Dwight Bailey, Charlene Blankenship, Ruth Hess, Margaret Lindsey and Ilene Reynolds.
 


Bennie Lynn Yates Sr.
(Haysi, VA)

  Bennie Lynn Yates, Sr., 58, of Haysi, died Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Burlin Yates and Dorothy Deel Yates. He was a former employee of Vansant Concrete and a member of the Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marylene Yates Yates.
  He is survived by one daughter, Wanda Hagy and husband, Denver, of Vansant; two sons, Bennie Lynn Yates, Jr. and wife, Marcella of Mavisdale and Shawn Eric Yates of Haysi; two sisters, Kathlene Boyd of Grundy and Lucille Justus of Forks, WA; three brothers, Jackie Yates of Prater, Danny Yates of Vansant and Clayton Yates of Prater; five grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, April 15 at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church at Prater with Elders Toy Looney, Andy Deel, Frank O’quinn, Ralph Mullins and Jimmy Kelly officiating. Burial followed in the Yates Cemetery on Greenbriar at Prater.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.

Shawn C. Mullins
(Paynesville, WV)

  Shawn C. Mullins, 35, of Paynesville, WV, died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of Chester Mullins of Bradshaw, WV and Patty Payne Mullins, of Paynesville. He attended Iaeger High School and was of the Baptist faith.
  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George Payne; and by his paternal grandparents, Mose and Nancy Mae Mullins.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Shannon Keith Mullins of Paynesville; one niece, Morgan Whitley Mullins of Grundy; maternal grandmother, Roma Payne of Paynesville; several cousins, aunts and uncles.
  Services were held Tuesday, April 18 at Bradshaw Mountain Community Church in Paynesville, with Pastor Bob Blevins officiating. Burial followed in the Noah Mullins Cemetery at State Line Ridge No. 1 near Paynesville.
  Active pallbearers were Kevin Reed, Justin Vance, Don Dobbs, Gary Payne, Wesley Payne, Louie Payne, Jason Smith, Greg Reynolds and Kevin Owens.
