Hazel Deel Boyd Kelley, 85, of Vansant, died Monday, April
16, 2007 at Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center,
Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Rufus
and Laura Deel. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan
County and a member of Coleman United Methodist Church. She
was an accomplished seamstress
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
first husband, William Stewart Boyd; and her second husband,
Truman Kelley, August 25, 1990.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
daughter, Tondelle Boyd; one sister, Clara Chaffen; and one
brother, Otis Deel.
She
is survived by three daughters, Ruby, and husband, Jim
Perkins of Grundy, Rita Opal Radcliffe of Tulsa, OK and
Laura Joyce and husband, Ed Deel, of Almont, MI; two sons,
Norman and wife, Josephine Boyd, of Vansant and Harman and
wife, Wanda Boyd, of Ceres; two sisters, Draxie Kennedy of
Compton Mountain and Birtie and husband, C.J. Vasburg of San
Fernando Valley, CA; 14 grandchildren, three
step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Services
will be held today (Thursday), April 19 at 1 p.m. at Coleman
United Methodist Church with Pastors Darrell Thacker and
Phillip Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain
Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Lenvil Lee Church, 73, of Big Rock, died Saturday, April 14,
2007 at his home.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Harvey Church
and Bertha Ward Church. He was a member of the Big Rock
Church of Christ where he served as deacon, trustee and song
leader. He was a retired coal miner and an avid outdoorsman.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
sister, Pauline Hurley, and one brother, Hollin Church.
He
is survived by his wife, Helen Faye Lester Church; one
daughter, Diana Jackson of Big Rock; two sisters, Narcy
Stacy of Grundy and Janet Justus of Hurley; three
grandchildren, David Jackson of Big Rock, Derrik Jackson of
Hurley and Kristy Stanley of Clintwood; four
great-grandchildren, Austin Jackson, Baylee Jackson, Kayden
Stanley and Rylee Jackson.
Services
were held Monday, April 16 at the Big Rock Church of Christ
with Evg. Sam Casebolt officiating. Burial followed in
Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Margaret Ann Shortridge Roark, 42, of Grundy, died Thursday,
April 12, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy,
following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of Hearl and Ilene
Ratliff Shortridge of Vansant. She was a lifelong resident
of Buchanan County, a member of Harman Freewill Baptist
Church, a member of Grundy High School's class of 1983 and
attended Southwest Virginia Community College. She had
served as a teacher's aid for the Buchanan County School
System and was a former employee of Westwood Pharmacy.
She
was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Julius
and Jennie Ratliff and her paternal grandparents, Andy and
Cora Shortridge.
She
is survived by her husband, Steven Roark; one daughter,
Jenna Elise Roark of Grundy; one son, Mason Alexander Roark
of Grundy; three sisters, Shirley, and husband, Eddie
Wilson, of Grundy, Janet and husband, Gale Leonard of
Abingdon; and Debbie Shortridge of Manassas; two brothers,
Jerry, and wife, Cindy Shortridge of Pilgrim's Knob and
Randy and wife, Peggy Shortridge of Grundy; mother-in-law,
Darlene Jackson of Belfast; several nieces and nephews.

were held Sunday, April 15 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel
with Ministers Eddie Wilson, Josh Bowman, Ronnie Sliger, and

County, died Friday, April 13, 2007 at Clinch Valley Medical
Center.

in Richlands, she was the daughter of the late Mildren and
Lexie Lowe Breedlove. She was a member of Loggy Bottom
Pentecostal Church at Pilgrim's Knob.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Billy Charles Page, and an infant daughter, Karen
Ann Shortt.
She
is survived by two daughters, Janet Ratliff, and husband,
Jim, of Oakwood and Hope Shortridge, and husband, Belfred of
Lebanon; three sons, Rodney Shortt and wife, Mary, of
Vansant, Wayne Shortt of Raven and Dale Shortt and wife,
Sherry, of Fayetteville, NC; one brother, Roy Breedlove, and
wife, Rachel, of Bland; one sister, Kay Arms, and husband,
Larry, of Dublin; seven grandchildren, Brandi Norman, Kevin
Shortridge, Nick Shortridge, Dustin Ratliff, Carrie Ratliff,
Dyland Shortt, Lukas Shortt; and six great-grandchildren.

Gregory Dewayne Stiltner, 44, of Big Rock, died Tuesday,
April 10, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy
following a brief illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of Bertie Lee Hayes
Stiltner of Big Rock and the late Quillen Stiltner. He was a
lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the
Church of Jesus Outreach. He was a disabled coal miner.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by four
brothers, Billy, Ricky, Leroy and Ronnie Stiltner.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters,
Candy Chaffins and Bethany Chaffins, both of Mouthcard, KY;
four sisters, Nina Mae Smith and Roberta, and husband,
Willard Grizzle, all of Big Rock, Linda Carol Ramsey of
Vansant and Judy Croninger of McClure, OH; three brothers,
James Lester, Ralph Stiltner and Arville Stiltner, all of
Big Rock.

at Big Rock with the Rev. Willard Grizzle and the Rev.

Elder Ervin Fortner, 91, of Wolford, died Monday, April 16,
2007 at his home following an extended illness.
Born
in Wayne County, WV, he was the son of the late Jink and
Flora Watts Fortner. He was a resident of Buchanan County
most of his life, was a member of the Old Regular Baptist
Church and an ordained minister. He was a retired coal
miner.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
grandson, two great-grandchildren, one son-in-law and two
brothers.
He
is survived by his wife, Frankie Fortner; six daughters,
Rachel Rife Cline and Diana Bandy and husband, Ron, all of
Hurley, Geraldine Nichols and husband, Roy, of Grundy,
Brenda Bandy and husband, Latney, of Wolford, and Anita Goss
and husband, Jimmy and Marletta Cantrell and husband, Greg,
all of Whitewood; two sons, Burnice Fortner of Hurley and
Donald Fortner of Wolford; four sisters, Sarah Mathes of
Huntington, WV, Mary Ellen Baxter of Oakwood, GA, Ruby
Donahoe of South Point, OH and Opal Garvis of Rittman, OH;

Buchanan County, died Saturday, April 7, 2007 at Buchanan
General Hospital in Grundy following a brief illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Harve and
Nannie Stiltner McClanahan. She was a life-long resident of
Buchanan County and a member of Bethlehem Old Regular
Baptist Church #2. She was a homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Donald Looney, December 27, 1971; one daughter, Ann
Looney Riffe, December 31, 1998; two sisters, Maxie Dales
and Lillian Howell; and one brother, Hatler McClanahan.
She
is survived by one daughter, Sherry, and husband, Greg
Daugherty of Wynn Gate, NC; one son, James J. and wife,
Beverly Looney, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two sisters, Mossie
Lee Smith of Grundy and Bertha Newsome of Melbourne, FL; one
brother, Auty, and wife, Polly McClanahan, of Prater; one
son-in-law, Jack Riffe of Grundy; three grandchildren, Tim

2007 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN,

in Buchanan County, he was the son of Inez Yates Endicott of
Grundy and the late Bert Stiltner. He was a lifelong
resident of Buchanan County and was of the Christian faith.
He was a former employee of Vansant Tire Company.
He
is survived by two daughters, Brittany Bowman of Grundy and
Cassondra Bowman of Clintwood; two step-daughters, Christy
St. Clair and Emily St. Clair; two step-sons, Eric Childress
and Jonathan St. Clair; close companion of three years,
Crystal St. Clair; nine sisters, Connie, and husband, Kenny
Ramey, of Big Rock, Patty, and husband, Clifford Keene,
Janie Lester and companion, Eric Stiltner, Julie, and

Rebecca Ellen Vance Honaker, 88, of Jolo, WV, died
Saturday, April 14, 2007 at the home of her daughter and
son-in-law, Peggy Jean and Riley Cole, with whom she had
made her home for the past five years.
Born
in Bradshaw, WV, she was the daughter of the late John
William and Fannie Elizabeth Pruitt Vance. She had made
her home in the McDowell County area all of her life and
was a member of the Community Church of the Living God in
Jolo for some 50 years.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, George Washington Honaker; one daughter, Pearlie
Marie Arnett; four sons, Bill, Fred, Johnny Lee and George
Thomas Honaker; four sisters, Mary Jane Hagerman, Vicy
Hagerman, Hattie Hagerman and Mattie Hale; three brothers,
George, Charlie and Perry Vance; two grandsons, Robbie Lee
Cole and Boby Ray Arnett; and two great-grandsons,
Johnthan Lambert and Anthony Kindoll.
She
is survived by four daughters, Peggy Cole and husband,
Riley, Frances Wimmer and Anna Mae Clark, and husband,
Leon, all of Jolo and JoAnn Rowe of Glen Lynn; one son,

W. Pauline (Polly) Raines Tylenda Kennedy, 83, of
Carlisle, PA, formerly of Buchanan County, died Saturday,
April 14, 2007 at the Thornwald Nursing Facility in
Carlisle, following an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late
William P. and Virgie Alice Hurley Raines and a
granddaughter of the late Sam R. and Jane Hurley. She was
a founding member of the Grundy Church of Christ and a
member of the Grundy Church of Christ choir.
She
graduated from Mountain Mission School's class of 1940 and
was a member of the Mountain Mission School Alumni
Association. She attended Virginia Intermont and Longwood
College before leaving to work in Washington, D.C. during
World War II for the U.S. Government and the U.S. House of
Representatives. While there, she met and and married
Benny Tylenda of Mount Carmel, PA, who was serving in the
U.S. military at that time. Upon her return to Grundy, she
was a second grade teacher for the Buchanan County School
system for five years, and an employee of Flat Top
Insurance Agency for five years. She had served on the
Grundy Town Council for eight years also holding the
position of Vice Mayor, was a member of the Grundy Woman's
Club for six years, a member of the Buchanan County
Chamber of Commerce, part-owner of Raines Motors in
Grundy, was owner/operator of Shoes and Things in Grundy
and was a former employee of Grundy Funeral Home.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
first husband, Benjamin Henry Tylenda; her second husband,
Lyle F. Kennedy; one brother, Samuel R. "Sonny"
Raines; and one sister, Joan Raines Buchanan.
She
is survived by one son, Ben H. Tylenda Jr. and wife, Mary
Lynn Clevinger Tylenda of Camp Hill, PA; one sister, Mary
Lynn Neeley of Grundy; two grandsons, Ben H. Tylenda III
and wife, Tamara of Pittsburgh, PA and Russell W. Tylenda
of New Cumberland, PA; two great-grandsons, Bradley John
Tylenda and Matthew Ryan Tylenda, both of Pittsburgh; one
daughter-in-law, Leisa Kennedy and husband, Steve Carr,
and children, Stephanie and Orrin, of Pigeon Forge, TN;
two sisters-in-law, Betty Flo Raines of Grundy and Helen
Tylenda Ward of Silver Springs, MD; several nieces and
nephews.

Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, April
21 at 3 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with her
nephew, Evg. William L. Neeley, officiating. Entombment
will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum at
Big Rock.

Leila Reed Gearhart. He was a resident of Buchanan County
most of his life and a member of Bethany Bible Church. He
was a former employee of Island Creek Coal Company for 41
years and was a member of the United Mine Workers of
America.

addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Dennis and Ollie Reed.
He
is survived by his fiance', Carolyn Gearhart of Feds
Creek; one daughter, Elizabeth Gearhart and fiance',

were held Sunday, April 15 at Mullins Funeral Home Chapel
with Pastor Allen Bonnell officiating. Burial followed in
Temple Hill Memorial Park Cemetery at Castlewood.

Josephine Ratliff Lemons, 47, of Detroit, MI, formerly of
Buchanan County, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 at her
home.
She
was the daughter of the late Clyde and Ruby Ratliff.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
sister, Tonnia Ratliff.
She
is survived by her husband, Richard Lemons; daughters,
Carrie and Kelly of Michigan; two sons, Stephen and
Jessie, of Michigan; one step-son, Doug; sisters, Juanita
Bartley of Keen Mountain, Kathy Wolford of Princeton, WV,
Flora Stiltner, Margie Ratliff, Wanda Ratliff and Sharon
Hunter, all of Michigan; one half-sister, Stella Cosme, of
Michigan; two brothers, Clarence Ratliff and Mike Ratliff,
both of Lockhart, AL; and 10 grandchildren.

Clyde Stewart, 74, of Ligonier, IN, died Thursday, April
12, 2007 in
Ligonier.
Born
in Jolo, WV, he was the son of the late Ervin and Macie
Keen Stewart.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
son, Anthony Ray Stewart, and one brother, J.C. Stewart.
He
is survived by his wife, Sitha Louise Stewart; one son,
Allen Lane Stewart of Farmington, MO; one daughter, Macie
Jane Godbey of Ligonier; three sisters, Gertrude Wallace
of Cleveland, OH, Irene Sapp of Tennessee and Ethelene
Wimmer of Jolo; four grandchildren, Brandon Hicks, Shelia
Owens, Shane Stewart and Jonna Stewart; and three
great-grandchildren.
Services
were held Monday, April 16 at Crossview Church of Christ
at State Line Ridge with Evg. Hobert Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed in the Lee Davis Family Cemetery on Davis
Ridge.
Pallbearers
were James Wimmer, Randy Wimmer, Terry Wimmer and Vernor
Wimmer, Chris Thornsbury, Paul Thornsbury, Ricky
Thornsbury and Aaron Thornsbury.
