It was Twin Valley’s second win, second one-run win,
and
its second straight victory over Buchanan County
rival
Grundy.
Jacob
St. Clair singled home Josh Smith with the
winning
run in the bottom of the 7th inning to give
the
Panthers a 5-4 non-district win over the Golden
Wave
Thursday afternoon at Enoch’s Branch.
The
game was moved from Twin Valley because of work
being
done adjacent to the TVHS baseball field. The
Panthers
defeated Grundy, 8-7, on the Wave’s home
field
the previous week.
Smith,
St. Clair and Hunter Simpson had two hits
apiece
in support of
Twin
Valley starter Ethan Prater, who went the
distance
to pick up the win. Prater struck out eight,
walked
two and scattered seven hits for the Panthers
(2-2).
John
Hagy posted similar numbers in taking a
complete-game
loss for Grundy (0-7). Hagy also allowed
seven
hits, fanned seven and walked two batters.
Hagy
was 2-4 and Jeremy O'Quinn went 2-3 at the plate
for
the Golden Wave. Grundy took a 2-0 lead in the
first
on an RBI single by Hagy and an RBI groundout
off
the bat of Cody Billiter.
Wild
pitches and errors accounted for several runs
after
that. The Panthers tied the score at 2-2 when
Prater
and Smith each score on a wild pitch. Grundy
regained
the lead in the third thanks to four of Twin
Valley’s
eight errors. |

Rebels
Pound Out Big Non-District Diamond Win at Montcalm, 14-4 |

Justin
Vandyke and Shane Shelton combined on a
two-hitter,
while Shelton and Josh Childress led the
offense
as Hurley mauled Montcalm, W.Va., 14-4 in
interstate
baseball action Thursday afternoon at
Montcalm.
Vandyke
worked the first four innings, striking out 10
batters.
The freshman picked up his second win in as
many
decisions. He got relief help from Shelton, who
entered
the game in the fifth and picked up a save.
“Shane
came in and did a good job in relief,” Hurley
coach
Wayne Hall said. “I was able to hold Justin to
60
pitches or so, and that’s a luxury to be able to do
that.
“Both
my freshmen (pitchers), Justin and Gary
(Blankenship)
have pitched well. With them and Shane,
I’ve
got three good pitchers I can count on.”
The
Rebels put the pressure on the Generals early,
scoring
three runs in both the first and third innings
and
adding two more on a two-run homer by Childress in
the
second.
Childress
was 3-4 and drove in three runs, while
Shelton
had two hits and also drove in three runs.
“Josh
and Shane have both hit the baseball well for
me,”
Hall added. “And the other guys have had some big
hits
here and there.
“I
need some of my freshmen to step up for me on
defense.
Other than that we’re playing pretty well.
The
Rebels built an 8-2 lead in the third and extended
it to
12-3 with three runs in the sixth inning. Hurley
had
nine hits and took advantage of six Montcalm
errors.
The Rebels committed just two errors.
Hurley
hosts another West Virginia rival, Iaeger, on
Thursday
and opens Black Diamond District play Friday
at
Buchanan County rival Council.
