Lela Ruth Young
(Big Rock)

  Lela Ruth Ramey Young, 72, of Big Rock, died Sunday, March 5, 2006 at her home.
  Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late James Ramey and Winnie Clevinger Ramey. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a member of Harman Holiness Church and was a homemaker.
  She is survived by her husband, Ersel Young; three daughters, Lucrettia Estep and husband, Orville, Della Jackson and husband, Dean, all of Hurley and Leona Shryock and husband, Ronnie, of Coshocton, OH; one son, Steve Young and wife, Vicky, of West Lafayette, OH; one sister, Mavis Jerelene Epling of Mouthcard, KY; one brother, Ervin Ramey of Mouthcard; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), March 9 at 1 p.m. at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Pastor Danny Hess and the Revs. Henry Rowe, Mike Casey and Donnie Prater officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers will be Orville Estep, Dean Jackson, Ronnie Shryock, Michael Vanover, Neil Houts and Carl Stevens.
  Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Clint Sutherland, Kelly Justus, Scott Coleman and James Taylor.
  Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
 


Lorene Helton Lester
(Rowe)

  Lorene Helton Lester, 66, of Rowe, died Friday, March 3, 2006 at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Noah and Carrie Bailey Helton. A lifelong resident of the area, she was of the Pentecostal faith and a member of Robinson Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Lester; one sister, Faye Reynolds Yates; and one infant brother, Curtis Helton.
  She is survived by two sons, Bobby Joe and wife, Tina Lester, of Rowe and Jeffrey and wife, Vanessa Lester, of Honaker; three daughters, Debbie K. and husband, Randy Lester and Tammy and Eddie Keen, all of Rowe, and Phyllis and James Cassell of Beford; three brothers, Carlos Helton and wife, Geraldine and Buford Helton, all of Rowe, F.P. Helton and wife, Shelia, of Honaker; two sisters, Jerlene McGlothlin of Rowe and Eva Hale and husband, Leonard, of Drill; six grandchildren;
  Services were held Monday in Honaker with the Revs. Carl Smith and Ancil Childress officiating. Interment followed in the Street Cemetery at Rowe.
  Pallbearers were relatives and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Forest Swan, Dr. James McVey and Dr. Weinacker.
 


Phyllis Prater Justus
(Hurley)

  Phyllis Prater Matney Justus, 68, of Hurley, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Winfred and Lurlie Prater. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of Word Evangelistic Outreach Church and was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Matney; seven brothers, Buford, Ed, Buddy, Clinton, Richard, Dempsey and Johnny Prater; and one step-daughter, Angela Michelle Justus.
  She is survived by her husband, Roy Justus; two daughters, Connie and husband, Danny Justus and Lynn and husband, David Rife, all of Hurley; three sons, Brian and wife, Missy Matney, Alan Matney and Betty Owens and Dean and wife, Carmen Matney, all of Hurley; five sisters, Lurlie Coleman of Hurley, Betty Amundson and Hazel Ball, both of Chicago, IL, Ruby Breeding of Floyd and Lillian McDonald of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, Ulvert Prater of Hurley and Roger Prater of Floyd; seven grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, March 5 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Rife Cemetery on Guesses Fork near Hurley.
  Active pallbearers were family and friends.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Aileen Altizer Brown
(Pilgrim’s Knob)

  Aileen (Al) Altizer Brown, 76, of Pilgrim’s Knob, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
  Born in Amonate, she was the daughter of the late Samuel (Slick) and Essie Altizer. She attended Garden High School and was later inducted into the Garden High School Hall of Fame for her outstanding contribution to girls basketball.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Brown, and two brothers, Willis Altizer and Wade Altizer.
  She is survived by one son, Jeff, and wife, Glenna, of Richlands; brothers and sisters, Tootsie Matney and husband, Raymond, of Oakwood, JoAnn Johnson of Keen Mountain, Peggy Webb and husband, Johnny, of Keen Mountain, Janie Coleman and husband, Roger, of Deel and Sam Altizer of Abingdon, one brother-in-law, Hurtle Brown of Ocala, FL, one sister-in-law, Rethal Brown of Pilgrim’s Knob; one granddaughter, Ally, one grandson, Corey, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Saturday, March 4 at Buchanan Funeral Home, Keen Mountain, with Minister Chris Webb officiating. Burial followed in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands.
  Nephews and friends served as pallbearers.
  Honorary pallbearers were Joe Ward, Rufus Keen, Carl Keen, Russell Rash, Raymond Matney, Roger Coleman, Johnny Webb and Dr. Ramesh Kabaria.
  Buchanan Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
 


Danny Gene Fraley, Sr.
(Big Rock)

  Danny Gene Fraley, Sr., 69, of Big Rock, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
  Born in Pike County, KY, he was a son of the late Jader and Welthie Newsome Fraley. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life and a member of the Big Rock Church of Christ. He was a retired employee of Kentland Elkhorn Coal Corporation and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 1640.
  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dean Fraley, Doug Fraley and Edsel Fraley; two half-sisters and one half-brother.
  He is survived by his wife, Nila Irene Johnson Fraley; three daughters, Angela Sue and husband, Keith Taylor, Welthie (Babe) and husband, Robert Hankins, all of Big Rock and Willa Mae and husband, Timmy Jackson of Hurley; two sons, Danny Gene, Jr. and wife, Linda Fraley and Ralph Edward Fraley and fiance’, Gail Prater, all of Big Rock; one sister, Brenda Joyce Fraley of Sebring, FL; three brothers, Sammy Lee Fraley of Big Rock, Terry Ray Fraley of Sebring and Lonnie Emerson Fraley of Jacksonville, FL; nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter.
  Services were held Friday, March 3 at the Big Rock Church of Christ with Evgs. Bob Miller and Sam Casebolt officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were grandchildren.

Carl Eugene Rash
(Lester’s Fork)

  Carl Eugene Rash, 76, of the Lester’s Fork section of Rt. 1, Grundy, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy, following an extended illness.
  Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Sarah Jane Justus Rash. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, was of the Protestant faith and was a retired coal miner.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Eugene Rash; one brother, Jason Rash; and one sister, Mary Frances (Roseanne) Justus.
  He is survived by his wife, Laura Hensley Rash; three daughters, Connie R. Matney of Hurley, Tamela and husband, Frank Sparks, of Wolford and Pamela and husband, Bill Amburgy of Lebanon; four brothers, Delmar Rash of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Frank Rash of Abingdon, Robert Russell Rash of Tazewell and Texas Rash of Rural Retreat; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, March 3 at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Edwards officiating. Burial followed in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
  Active pallbearers were grandsons, family and friends.
  Honorary pallbearers were Bobby Justus, Dr. Clint Sutherland, Healing Hands Home Health Care and Donna Mounts.
  Grundy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Mary Madeline Ball
(Council)

  Mary Madeline Rasnake Ball, 75, of Council, died Monday, March 6, 2006 in a Bristol, TN hospital.
  Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Elbert and Alta Presley Rasnake. A lifelong resident of the area, she was formerly employed as a seamstress with Honaker Mills and Lebanon Apparel for several years. She attended Trinity Freewill Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin Rasnake; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Ball, and by her husband, Walter Ball.
  She is survived by one daughter, Christine and husband, Conley Wilson of Council; one son, James W. Ball of Council; one sister, Arbutus Ball of Honaker; one brother, William Rasnake of Honaker; one grandson, one step-grandson, one step-great-grandson, several nieces and nephews.
  Services will be held Friday in Honaker with the Revs. John Tiller and Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Ball Cemetery at Council.
  Pallbearers will be nephews.

Raymond E. Horn
(Lebanon, TN)

  Raymond E. Horn, 78, of Lebanon, TN, died Sunday, March 5, 2006 in the St. Thomas Hospital.
  He was a member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired coal miner.
  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jarvey Horn and Priscilla Ann Cooper Horn; sons, Hobert Donald Horn, Danny Dean Horn, Terry Lee Horn and Jimmy Horn; sisters, Martha Horn, Gladys Penley and Lona Puryear; brothers, Cecil Horn and Rufus Horn.
  He is survived by his wife, Lydia A. Horn of Watertown; daughters, Helen Faye Vaughn of Lebanon, Ruth Horn of Norene, Linda Sue (Buddy) Hibdon of Houston, TX, Molly (Jerry) Stewart of Gordonsville and Delores Carol (Richard) Phillips of Norene, TN; sister, Betsy (Troy) Dotson, of Whitewood; brother, Grat Horn of Texas; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Wednesday, March 8 in the Partlow Funeral Chapel, Lebanon, with the Revs. Javin Lawson and David Lawson officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery in Norene, TN.
  Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were friends, family and grandsons.
  Partlow Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
 


Lucille S. McClanahan
(Lawrenceburg, TN)

  Lucille Stanley McClanahan, 83, of Lawrenceburg, TN, died Saturday, March 4, 2006 at Crockett Hospital in Lawrenceburg.
  A native of Mouthcard, KY, a retired nurse’s aide and a member of the Church of God Mountain Assembly in Lawrenceburg, her parents were the late T.R. and Cosby Jane Hackney Stanley.
  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence McClanahan, and one brother, Clayton Stanley.
  She is survived by one daughter, Eloise McClanahan Ayers (Donald) of Lawrence-burg; two sons, Jerry Dean McClanahan (Gail) of North Adams, MI and Dennis McClanahan (Paulette) of Lawrenceburg; three brothers, Eugene Stanley of Monroe, MI, Paul Stanley of Trenton, MI and Johnie Staley of Palmetto, FL; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
  Services were held Monday, March 6 at Neal Funeral Home, Lawrenceburg, with the Revs. Mike Cornelius and Mike Padgett officiating. Interment followed in the Lawrence County Memorial Gardens in Lawrenceburg.
  Neal Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Mitchell Combs
(Frenchburg, KY)

  Mitchell Combs, 70, of Frenchburg, KY, died Monday, February 27, 2006 at his home.
  Born in Hindman, KY, he was a son of the late Elijah and Ida Huff Combs. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served 21 years and was of the Baptist faith.
  He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Combs; children, Debra Bice of Frenchburg, Lori Shuoltz of Georgia, Douglas Combs of Alabama and Elana Lewis of Georgia; two brothers, Clyde Combs of Virginia and Doc Combs of Carmigo, KY; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Friday, March 3 at J.S. Willis Church with Junior Deel and James Sweeney officiating. Burial followed in the J.S. Willis Cemetery at Haysi.
  Pallbearers will be family and friends.
  Haysi Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
 


Joseph Millard Scyphers
(North Tazewell, VA)

  Joseph Millard Scyphers, 81, of North Tazewell, died Thursday, March 2, 2006 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
  Born in Seaboard, he was the son of the late Henry Clay and Mary Sparks Scyphers. He was a lifetime resident of Tazewell County and had lived in North Tazewell for the past 21 years. He had served his country by joining the Navy and serving in Pearl Harbor. He returned home to work in the coal mines for Hawley Coal Mining Corporation and retired and was a member of the United Mine Workers.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Billings and Naomi Church, and one brother, James Scyphers.
  He is survived by his wife, Lillie Mae Scyphers; daughters, Naomi Baker and husband, Estil, of Asheboro, NC, Carol Rowe of Sophia, NC, Brenda Roberts and husband, Dale, of N. Tazewell, Debra Caldwell of Camden, SC, and Donna Adams and husband, Kenny, of Thomasville, NC; sons, Tommy J. Scyphers and wife, Donna, of Mansfield, OH, and James Scyphers and wife, Legrthel of Lerona, WV; sisters, Eula Maye of Wharncliffe, WV and Lucille Workman and husband, Sammy, of Pounding Mill; brother, Roy Scyphers and wife, Nell, of Bristol, VA; half-brother, Clayton Webb of Brenton, WV; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Sunday, March 5 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell with the Revs. Roy Lee Smith, Lawrence Hayes and Don Waddell officiating. Interment followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.
  Pallbearers were grandchildren.

Clara Webb Ratliff
(Haysi, VA)

  Clara Webb Hay Ratliff, 84, of Rt. 1, Haysi, died Monday, March 6, 2006 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton.
  Born in Bilvia, KY, she was a daughter of the late Moses and Lillie Craft Webb. She was a homemaker.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Curtis Hay; her second husband, Hobert Ratliff; a daughter, Judy Hay Garrett; two grandsons, Butchie Barton and Charles Robert Rice; one great-grandson, Christopher Todd Bartley; brothers, Arlie and Denver Webb; one sister, Minnie Cook; two half-sisters, Janie Webb and Edna Polly; and three half-brothers, John D., Lenford and Kenneth Webb.
  She is survived by four daughters, Cleta (Jim) Bartley of Haysi, Janice Reedy of Blue Ridge, Mary (Dick) Beasley of Gloucester and Jewell Hay (Gerald Rhodes) of Clintwood; one son, Roger (Sherill) Hay of Winston, OR; two sisters, Della Kincer of Loraine, OH and Leona Forest of Gloucester; one brother, Freddy Maggard of London, KY; three step-children, Ken and Bob Ratliff and Ann Ford; five grandsons, four granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
  Services will be held today (Thursday), March 9 at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Craft officiating. Burial followed in the Bartley Cemetery at Haysi.
  Pallbearers will be Todd Bartley, Jamie Bartley, Christopher Garrett, Roger Hay, Roger Davis and Dick Beasley.
