Clyde Looney, 89, of Rt. 5, Grundy, died Tuesday, February
27, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy, following
an extended illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Charlie and
Virgie Davis Looney. He was a former coal operator and a
mechanic, having owned Clyde Looney Garage at Slate Creek.
He was also a carpenter, having helped with building several
homes. He was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ. He
was a gardener, woodworker, welder, hunter and fisherman.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Faye Smith Looney, October 18, 1997; two sisters,
Velva Hendrickson and Edith Looney; and one brother, Woodrow
Looney.
He
is survived by one daughter, Sandra Looney Clevinger of
Grundy; one grandson, James E. Clevinger and wife, Sandra R.
Clevinger of Grundy; one sister, Virginia Bellon of Gray,
TN; two nieces and one nephew.
Services
were held Friday, March 2 at the Grundy Church of Christ
with Evg. Dennis Wimmer and the Rev. Howell Scott
officiating. Burial followed in the Looney-Ratliff Cemetery
in Grundy.

Judy Ann Stiltner, 60, of Grundy, died Friday, March 2, 2007
at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy.
She
was the daughter of the late Alden Hess and Elizabeth
Tackett Hess and was a homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one
brother, Tommy Mullins; and one grandson, Eddie Kyle Colley.
She
is survived by her husband, Stanley Kyle Stiltner; one
daughter, Inez Elizabeth Colley and husband, Eddie Dean of
Harman; four sisters, Helen Clevinger and husband, Ralph, of
Harman, Paula Mullins and Inez Ramey of Grundy, Kephia
Simmons and husband, Joe, of Lebanon and Millie Hackney and
husband, Jack, of Abingdon; three brothers, Leonard Alden
Hess and wife, Ima Jean, of Florida, Auty Mullins and wife,
Jeanette, of Oklahoma and Dallas Hess and wife, Beulah, of
Abingdon; three grandchildren, Sunshine Leann Colley, Sarah
Deanna Stiltner and Justin Dean Colley, all of Grundy; one
great-great-grandson, Preston Scott Sullivan of Grundy;
several nieces and nephews.

were held Tuesday, March 6 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home
in Grundy with the Rev. Danny Hess, the Rev. Terry Colley
and Evg. Mike Rife officiating. Burial followed in Mountain
Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock.

Thelma Smith Doughten, 86, of Grundy, died Saturday, March
3, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.
She
was the daughter of the late Harve Smith and Lou Emma
Maynard Smith. She was a homemaker and was the last
surviving member of her immediate family.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Ira Doughten, 21 years to the date; one son, Bennie
Doughten; seven sisters and eight brothers.
She
is survived by three daughters, Ann Doughten of Grundy,
Patty Deel and husband, John Edd, of Harman and Linda Owens
of Prater; two sons, Robert Doughten of Grundy and Jimmy
Doughten and wife, Debbie, of Cleveland, TN;seven
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

were held Monday, March 5 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home
in Grundy with Elders Danny Smith and Donnie Stacy
officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Branch Cemetery.

Jimmy
Rodney Dotson, 47, of Hurley, died Saturday, March 3, 2007
following a motor vehicle accident in Hurley.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of Walter Dotson, Jr. and
Juanita Justus Dotson of Hurley. He was an avid NASCAR fan.
In
addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Freda
Kaye Dotson of Lexington, KY; his paternal grandmother,
Rosie Marie Dotson of Hurley; one niece, Andrea Brooke
Justus of Hurley; two
nephews, Erik Joshua Justus and Aaron Jay Justus, both of
Lexington; several aunts and uncles.

were held Wednesday, March 7 at Kelsa Church of Christ with
Evg. Fredon Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the
Justus Cemetery on Guesses Fork at Hurley.

Coleman
(Vansant)
Bertice (Bert) Coleman, 80, of Vansant, died Thursday, March
1, 2007 at Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy following a
brief illness.
Born
in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Joe Perry
Coleman and Virginia Dales Coleman. He was a retired coal
miner with 45 years of service at several mines throughout
his career. A member of the UMWA Local #1374, he was a
veteran of the
Korean Conflict and a member of Little Freedom Old Regular
Baptist Church.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one
daughter, Sherry L. Elswick; two brothers, Jonah Coleman and
Virgil Coleman; and one sister, Larnie Marsdan.
He
is survived by his wife, Francis L. Coleman; one daughter,
Sandra Munsey and husband, John, of Grundy; two sisters,
Myrtle Stiltner of Ripley, OH and Mandy Hackney of Fairborn,
OH; one grandson, Leslie E. Elswick, of Abingdon; several
nieces and nephews.
Services
were held Sunday, March 4 at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home
in Grundy with Elders of the Little Freedom Old Regular
Baptist Church officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills
Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill.

February 27, 2007 at Holston Valley Medical Center,
Kingsport, TN, following an extended illness.
Born
in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Dewey
and Emma Raines Marrs. She was a resident of Buchanan County
many years and a member of Union Light Freewill Baptist
Church. She was a homemaker.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two
infant daughters, Sharon and Donna; one sister, Bessie Klugh;
five brothers, Paul Marrs, James Marrs, Arthur Coleman, Earl
Coleman and Ralph Coleman.
She
is survived by her husband, Carl Lewis Justice; two
daughters, Kathy Justice of Hurley and Debbie and husband,
Tim Compton, of Big Stone Gap; two sisters, Jean Justice of
Hurley and Mildred Branham of Rochester Hills, MI; and three
grandchildren, Heather, Adam and Logan Compton.

She
is survived by her husband, Cecil Hurley; three daughters,

Roxie Stevens Harris, 78, of the Combs Ridge section of
Council, died Thursday, March 1, 2007 in a Lebanon hospital.
Born
in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Robert
and Rachel Johnson Stevens. A lifelong resident of the
Buchanan County area, she was a member of Tiller Town
Freewill Baptist Church.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Hampton "June" Harris, Jr.; one daughter,
Helen Harris; one son, Harold Harris; two brothers, Paul
Stevens and Clovis Stevens; and one sister, Dorothy Stevens.
She
is survived by one son, Herman, and wife, Virginia Lois
Harris, of Council; two grandsons, Herman Stacy Harris and
wife, Michelle, of Bee and Malachi Casey Harris of Council;
two great-grandchildren, Mackenza Jade Harris and Landon
Cade Harris; five sisters, Gracie Cook of Port Clinton, OH,
Rassie Honaker and Dolly Stone, both of Chester, Julia
Johnson of Council and Ruth Howard of Grundy; four brothers,
the Rev. Lee Roy Stevens of Rosedale, Clarence Leemore

Rose
Pearl Bailey Carte, 72, of Hillsville, died Sunday, March 4,
2007 in Galax.
She
was the daughter of the late Witcher Isom Bailey and Nancy
Mullins Bailey. She was a homemaker, a gospel singer
and the last surviving member of her immediate
family.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three
sisters and five brothers.
She
is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Carte;
two daughters, Fredia Dobbs and husband, Gerald of Jewell
Ridge and Tina Davis of Galax; one son, Captain Charles A.
Carte of the U.S. Marine Corp. of Hillsville; three
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

home.

is the daughter of Vicki and Furl Newberry of Phoenix, AZ.
She was of the Baptist faith.

was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Jesie
and Fannie Newberry; and maternal grandparents, Garland
and Hattie Edwards.
She
is survived by her husband, Larry "Dean" Deel;
one son, Michael Dean Deel of Abingdon; two daughters,
Leigh Ann (Adam) O'quinn and Melissa Dawn Deel, both of
Rt. 2, Haysi; one granddaughter, Emily Dawn O'quinn; one

William Stamp

MD)
George William Stamp, 64, of Waldorf, MD, died Thursday,
March 1, 2007 at his home.
Born
in La Plata, MD, he was the son of the late Edward Stamp
and Helen Simmons. He attended Sasser High School and in
September 1971, enlisted in the United States Marine
Corps. He served for more than 13 years, including a tour
in Vietnam and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He
subsequently worked for Chaney Enterprises in many
capacities through the years. He was a longstanding member
of both The Veterans of Foreign Wars and The American
Legion.
He
is survived by his wife, Brownie Stamp; two step-sons,
Robert and Daniel Doerflein; one step-daughter, Nancy
Frost; two sisters, Brenda Kiley and Susan Anderson; two
brothers, Robert and Edward Stamp; 12 nephews and nieces
and 11 grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
Services
were held Tuesday, March 6 at Raymond Funeral Chapel in La
Plata with the Rev. Mark Roberson officiating. Interment
followed in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.

Francis "Doc" Owens, 87, of Crooked Branch Road,
Birchleaf, died Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at Johnson City
Medical Center in Johnson City, TN.
Born
in Finney, he was a son of the late Garland and Mae
Sutherland Owens. He was a retired coal miner, a member of
the United Mine Workers of America and was of the Baptist
faith.
In
addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
wife, Marie Owens, and brothers, Arnie, Milton, Maynard,
Ray, Paul and Stewart.
He
is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Owens of Clintwood,
Barbara Johnston of Maynardsville, TN and Terry (Don)
Simonson of Iowa; two sons, Tom (Clara) Owens of Galion,
OH and Mark (Karen) Owens of Wake Forest, NC; one brother,
Buford Owens of Wayne, MI; 11 grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.

Gary W. Rasnake, 53, of Lebanon, died Thursday, March 1,
2007 at his home.
He
was a son of Lorene Ray Rasnake of Hurricane Creek and the
late Virgil Mack Rasnake. He was a former resident of
Dickenson County, a 1972 graduate of Council High School,
was a disabled coal mine electrician and was a co-founder
of G&G Sporting Goods in Lebanon.
In
addition to his father, he was preceded in death by
maternal grandparents, Clarence Ray and Martha Ray;
paternal grandparents, Pierce Rasnake and Cordie Rasnake;
and step-grandmother, Carrie Elizabeth Rasnake.
In
addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife,
Gleendeen Arrington Rasnake; one son, Adrian S. Rasnake
and wife, Ashley M. of Lebanon; one granddaughter, Erin E.
Rasnake; three sisters, Rita Taylor and husband, Willis,
of Hurricane Creek, Pam McFarlane and husband, Golden of
Council and Denise Hess and husband, Tim of Fletcher's
Ridge; two brothers, Joley M. Rasnake and wife, Rita Kay

Minnie Marie Ratliff Fuller, 82, of Bedford, formerly of
Buchanan County, died at the new Bedford County Nursing
Home on Saturday, March 3, 2007.
She
was preceded in death by her parents, Greene Ratliff and
Sarah Cosby Griffith Ratliff and her husband, Avery
Fuller.
She
is survived by one son, Alda (A.C.) Fuller and wife, Ruth;
grandchildren, Patrick Wayne Fuller and wife, Bonnie and
Tina Antley; great-grandchildren, Cody and Hannah Antley;
step-grandchildren, Leigh Doss and husband, Steven,
Christine Richardson and husband, Brent;

miner.

Judith B. Sturgill Childress, 78, of Indianapolis, IN,
died Monday, February 5, 2007 at Methodist Yellow Rose.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Jennings C. Childress; sisters, Doris Beverly and
Shirley Wyatt.
Born
in Marion, she was the daughter of Harold D. and Mary
Edith Poe Sturgill. She was the office manager and
secretary for American United Life for 15 years before
leaving to work at I.P.S. School #61 in 1966 where she
retired from Crispus Attucks School in 1991.
She
is survived by her daughter, Lisa D. (John) Ernst;
brothers, Jack (Leatta) Sturgill, Buford "Pete"
(Dang) Sturgill, Johnny M. (Linda) Sturgill; sisters,
Peggy (Tyler) Yates and Sue Owens; granddaughter,
Alexandra M. Ernst; grandson, Matthew J. Ernst.

will be held today (Thursday), February 8 at Flanner &
Buchanan Funeral Center, Washington Park North. Burial
will be held in Washington Park North Cemetery.
